Gang member with ‘violent criminal history’ shot deputy, sheriff says

An arrest has been made in the shooting of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy on Monday. KTLA reporter Sara Welch learned of the arrest late Tuesday morning, and a little after 1 p.m., Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed that Raymundo Duran had been identified as the suspected shooter. Duran had been detained in San Diego County by California Highway Patrol officers on DUI and weapons charges, and L.A. County detectives interviewed Duran while he was in custody, which helped confirm him as the suspected shooter. “At the end of the day, we believe we have the suspect responsible for shooting our deputy in custody,” Sheriff Robert Luna said. L.A. deputy shot in back saved by bulletproof vest That motorcycle deputy, identified as Deputy Samuel Aispuro, 43, was shot in the back near the area of Barranca and Garvey avenues in West Covina Monday afternoon, though a bulletproof vest stopped the bullet. Luna said Monday that Aispuro was stopped at a red light at the time. “What kind of person shoots another person in the back? I can think of a lot of names for that.

Los Angeles will soon have high-speed rail. Could it eventually reach San Diego?

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Construction to California’s long-discussed high-speed rail network is finally making headway, with work beginning on Monday to get a privately-owned bullet train between Los Angeles and Las Vegas up and running. The $12 billion Brightline West rail line across state lines complements an existing, ambitious state plan to connect major cities in California with an 800-mile, intrastate fast train system from San Francisco and Sacramento in the north to Los Angeles and San Diego in the south. Although, the project, which was approved by voters in 2008, has been beset by ballooning costs and routing disputes. Now it could be decades before San Diegans see any high-speed rail service through the county. Rail spikes hammered, bullet train being built from Sin City to the City of Angels Jim Patrick, director of communications for the Southern California sector of the state’s High-Speed Rail Authority, told FOX5SanDiego.com on Tuesday that officials have “stopped actively working” on the proposed bullet train corridor between San Diego and Los Angeles to focus on the first phase of the system’s buildout, which is a San Francisco

San Diego’s housing market ranked 4th ‘most overpriced’ in California

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Although the spring homebuying season got off to a slow start, prices remain high in many places across California — San Diego included. In fact, a recent analysis has ranked it one of the 10 “most overpriced” housing markets in the state for 2024. Personal finance company Go Banking Rates used data from Zillow and other providers analyzed by Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business researchers. The methodology behind the rankings looked at how much of a premium or discount people received in each of the top 100 housing markets in the U.S. San Diego ranked No. 4 out of the 10 most overpriced housing markets in California with homes going for nearly 24% more than what they should be priced, according to the research. California home sales slowed in March as median home prices continued to climb Currently, the expected value of a home in San Diego is $764,788, but the average home price is listed around $946,976 — over $182,000 more than what they’re worth. Skyrocketing prices are attributed to more homebuyers attracted to the area for its

What to know about California’s new state park, a scenic green space where two rivers meet

On June 12, California will open its first new state park in nearly a decade, setting aside 1,600 acres near the confluence of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers in the San Joaquin Valley. The park will give visitors a glimpse of what the valley’s waterways were like before the arrival of agriculture, but it will be a while before the site offers many activities. Or has a name. The site is known as Dos Rios, but state officials have yet to officially name it. It sits eight miles west of Modesto, amid dairy farms and almond orchards, and is considered the largest public-private floodplain restoration project in the state. State parks officials said that beginning June 12, visitors will be able to take escorted hikes on some areas of the property and use about a dozen newly placed picnic tables and shade structures. But many activities will need to wait. Officials are still seeking public input and making plans for other possible activities, including biking, swimming, fishing and nonmotorized boating. Several crew members injured in crash on Georgia set of Eddie Murphy film

Several crew members were recently injured in a crash on the Georgia set of an Amazon MGM Studios film starring Eddie Murphy, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday. The studio confirmed to the AP that the accident happened Saturday while shooting a sequence that “did not go as planned.” Two of the injured crew members were hospitalized following the incident, a person close to the production told the news outlet. One was still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon. “We are still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering,” an Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson said Tuesday in a statement to the AP. “The well-being of the entire crew and cast is our first priority, and we will continue to insist on the highest industry standards of safety while filming. All safety precautions were reviewed prior to and monitored during the shoot,” the spokesperson said. The incident occurred when a truck “locked up” and collided with a car behind the scenes of “The Pickup,” which was filming on location

NBA disagrees with LeBron James and Lakers, supports calls made late in Game 2 loss

The NBA endorsed the calls made by officials during the final two minutes of the Lakers’ 101-99 playoff loss to the Nuggets on Tuesday night. LeBron James and the Lakers, who led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, complained shortly after losing on a buzzer-beating shot by Denver’s Jamal Murray and falling behind 2-0 in the Western Conference playoff series. In the two-minute report the league issues assessing officiating decisions made late in games, the sole error the NBA flagged was that Nikola Jokic should have been called for a defensive three-second violation with 1:53 left in the game and the Lakers leading 93-92. Jokic and the Nuggets clogged the passing lanes around Anthony Davis during the play. Austin Reaves missed a three-pointer late in the shot clock and Denver got the rebound. James was perplexed when referees called him for a foul during a Murray drive with 57.1 seconds left. The Nuggets guard nailed both free throws to tie the score 97-97. Afterward, some fans questioned why Lakers coach Darvin Ham didn’t use one of his challenges to contest the

Congressional Recount: 16 ballots being challenged in San Mateo County — some of which went uncounted due to a “simple oversight”

In another twist that could shake up the results of the recount in the Congressional District 16 race even more, 16 ballots are being challenged in San Mateo County that were excluded from the original tally due to what has been described as a “simple oversight.” The recount of the 182,135 votes cast in the March primary began on April 15 in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, where the congressional district is located. In the race to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo came in first by more than 8,000 votes ahead of Low and Simitian, who are deadlocked for second. All three were supposed to head to the November general election — a first in a California congressional race since the state changed to a top-two primary system in 2012. But a recount requested by Jonathan Padilla, a 2020 and 2024 Biden delegate and former mayoral campaign staffer for Liccardo, could knock Simitian or Low off the ballot if the results change. Preliminary partial results released Friday in Santa Clara County, showed Simitian ahead of Low by

Ousted fabulist Santos ends his long-shot bid to return to Congress

By Rashard Rose | CNN Former New York Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the House and is facing federal charges, said he is withdrawing his bid for Congress in New York’s 1st District. “I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for #NY1…I don’t want my run to be portrayed as reprisal against Nick Lalota… Although Nick and I don’t have the same voting record and I remain critical of his abysmal record, I don’t want to split the ticket and be responsible for handing the house to Dems,” Santos said in a post on X. Santos previously announced he was leaving the Republican Party and would run his congressional comeback bid as an independent. “I have meet with leaders and with constituents and I have made the decision to hang it up here and stop perusing this race, THIS YEAR! Saying goodbye to the Burger Pit, another classic San Jose joint

Kevin Ashford showed up with his camp chair at 9 a.m. Tuesday, first in line for the last day of business at the Burger Pit on Blossom Hill Road. ”I’d like to get the last Steerburger,” said Ashford, who was proudly wearing a Burger Pit T-shirt that he said he got 15 years ago when he turned 50. “I was here Saturday and ordered two full mushroom burgers, so we had those Sunday and Monday. I guess I’ve been eating Burger Pit all week.” He was told Monday there were only about 20 Steerburgers left, along with six ribeye steaks. That was the same day the restaurant — the last remaining location of the iconic South Bay chain — ran out of takeout containers. The milkshakes were done, and the phone was already disconnected, too. Kevin Ashford sits outside the Burger Pit on Blossom Hill Road, waiting for it to open on its last day of business, April 23, 2024. The chain started in 1953, and that Blossom Hill location opened in 1964. (Sal Pizarro/Bay Area News Group)  By 11 a.m., more than 30 people

Kurtenbach: Here are my favorite NFL Draft prospects for the 49ers’ defense

I, a 35-year-old man, have neglected my family and other responsibilities over the last few months to spend time with guys in college. Few things in sports are as interesting or as engrossing to me as the NFL Draft, so night after night (starting well before the Niners’ run to the Super Bowl), I’ve popped on some college football and gone to work, evaluating the class of 2024. Unlike past classes, it’s a great crop that proved well worth the time. Now, I could give you all a list of every prospect, but there are enough of those lists. How about I send you the CliffNotes instead? Here are my favorite prospects on defense for the 49ers in this upcoming draft, broken down into early (top 50), middle (top 150), and late picks: Defensive End Early: Darius Robinson – Missouri The Niners need someone who can play at 5-technique (lined up off the tackle’s outside shoulder) if their Wide-Nine defensive front is going to work. That’s what Arik Armstead (and paid as) before the Niners moved him to defensive tackle, and the team’s run defense

Man broke into L.A. mayor’s home during a ‘short gap’ in LAPD security, chief says

The man who broke into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ home on Sunday, making it to the second floor, arrived at a moment when there were no security officers on the premises, Interim Police Chief Dominic Choi said Tuesday. Choi said the early morning break-in took place during a shift change, when “the officers that are there overnight leave to head back to their station and the oncoming shift comes on.” “There was a short gap there, and that’s when that incident occurred,” Choi said to reporters after Tuesday’s Police Commission meeting. “That gap has been remedied. We’ve created an overlap so it doesn’t happen again.” Police said they arrested Ephraim Hunter, 29, on Sunday on suspicion of burglary after he allegedly broke into Getty House, the official mayor’s residence in Windsor Square. At around 6:40 a.m., authorities said, Hunter smashed a window and went inside, climbing the stairs to the second floor where the bedrooms are located. Two law enforcement sources, who were not authorized to discuss the case with the media, said that at one point, Bass was forced to hide in a

Melissa Barrera is not afraid

On paper, the gig is straightforward, albeit unconscionable: kidnap the daughter of a wealthy businessman and hold her until daddy coughs up the ransom. A crack team assembles, satisfying all the necessary roles for a heist. But after the girl is taken, it slowly becomes clear that the job description wasn’t entirely transparent about the true threat. Daddy’s little girl, it turns out, is a vampire. “Abigail,” the latest campy, gory romp from Radio Silence Productions (“Ready or Not”), sees Melissa Barrera take center stage as Joey, a former military medic with a knack for reading people and someone who has serious qualms with the mission; she didn’t know the target was a kid. Seeing Barrera in such a prominent role and solidifying her status as a scream queen was emotional. It was mere months ago that she was unceremoniously dropped as a lead in the “Scream” franchise and accused of being antisemitic for her public support of Palestinians. I had the opportunity to talk with Barrera over the phone about “Abigail,” about being a Latina in the film industry and about her experience with

Tesla profits plunge as automaker grapples with slumping EV sales

By Khristopher J. Brooks Edited By Alain Sherter Updated on: April 23, 2024 / 5:56 PM EDT / CBS News Electric vehicle incentives | On Your Side Electric vehicle incentives | On Your Side 02:41 Mounting competition in the stuttering electric vehicle market is taking the juice out of Tesla.  The automaker’s first-quarter profit plummeted 55% as falling global sales and price cuts sliced into the EV maker’s revenue and earnings. The company said Tuesday it made $1.13 billion in profit from January through March, compared with $2.51 billion in the same period a year ago. Revenue was $21.3 billion, down 9% from last year, the company said. Tesla executives blamed the dip partly on EV sales being “under pressure as many carmakers prioritize hybrids over EVs.” The weak earnings report landed on the same day Tesla announced it plans to lay off nearly 2,700 workers at its factory in Austin, Texas. The layoffs will happen during a two-week period starting June 14, according to a layoff notice. Tesla said last week that it’s  planning to lay off more than 10%  of its roughly 140,000

Gascón to Announce Charges Against Suspect in Bass Home Break-In

Criminal charges were expected to be filed Tuesday against a 29-year-old man suspected of breaking into Mayor Karen Bass’ official residence in the Windsor Square area early Sunday morning. Ephraim Hunter, of Los Angeles, has remained jailed on suspicion of burglary since his arrest following the break-in. He is jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to jail records. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón scheduled a late-afternoon news conference to announce charges in the case. The break-in occurred around 6:40 a.m. Sunday at Getty House, 605 S. Irving Blvd. in the Windsor Square neighborhood. Bass and her family were home at the time, but they were not harmed. Getty House is the official residence of the city’s mayor. The LAPD confirmed that the suspect broke a glass door while Bass and her family were inside, triggering an alarm that alerted police. Officers responded immediately and located and arrested a man at the scene without incident. It remained unclear whether the intruder specifically targeted the mayor’s residence or if it was simply a random crime. A woman identifying herself as Hunter’s mother told the

Cal Poly Humboldt Closed as Protesters Occupy Building

The Cal Poly Humboldt campus is closed today, as dozens of protesters continue to occupy Siemens Hall, having barricaded its entrances, while calling on the university to divest from entities they say fuel Israel’s ongoing war on Hamas in Gaza. “The message from inside is that, first of all, they feel the university is complicit because of the campus’ investments with weapons companies and Israeli companies,” said Ryan Connelly, a junior biology major who identified himself as a spokesperson for those occupying the building. “Their conditions for release of the building: Divest, and then we’ll talk.” The building was the epicenter of an intense standoff between protesters — whose ranks reportedly swelled to several hundred yesterday evening — and police from a host of local agencies who attempted to clear the building. The situation seemed to be escalating, with reports of police attempting to arrest protesters only to have them pulled back by the crowd, a request for a special team from the California Highway Patrol and for the deployment of pepper ball guns used to disperse crowd until police withdrew from the area around
