Return to softball form: Why confident James Logan says it is ready to compete with section’s elite

NEWARK – Danger was all around James Logan pitcher Anastasia Marquez in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday. Baserunners ready to spring into action crouched to the right, left and directly behind the senior with two outs. But in front of her was a familiar face in catcher Makayla Villapando, who had a simple message for her childhood friend. “Take your time and take control of the game,’” Villapando told the senior pitcher. “You control the tempo, so slow it down and go at your own pace.” In a situation where one hit could turn a five-run lead into a close game, Marquez took her catcher’s advice and a deep breath before striking out the next batter to wipe away the threat.  James Logan’s ace pitcher struck out 12 in a complete game as the Colts beat host Newark Memorial 5-0, improving the Union City school’s record to 16-1 overall and 9-0 in the Mission Valley Athletic League.  James Logan teammates look on from the dugout at the end of the sixth inning of their 5-0 win against Newark High at Newark High School

A’s lose to Yankees; Kotsay not happy with umpire’s wide strike zone

NEW YORK — Right-hander Paul Blackburn and the Athletics could not overcome a tough first inning on Tuesday in a 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees. Blackburn struggled early on as he gave up a two-run home run to Anthony Rizzo that capped a four-run first inning for the Yankees, who held on and handed the A’s their fourth loss in the last five games. Seth Brown hit an RBI double in the first off Marcus Stroman (2-1) to give the A’s a 1-0 lead. Giancarlo Stanton had a go-ahead double against Blackburn (2-1) in the bottom half before Rizzo hit his second homer of the season and his first since April 7. Rizzo had just one extra-base hit in 54 at-bats between homers. Blackburn had not allowed a home run in four previous starts this season. Stroman (2-1) struck out nine — his most since he fanned nine for the New York Mets against the Giants on Aug. 17, 2021. Shea Langeliers homered in the second and Lawrence Butler in the fourth. But the A’s also went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position

Logan Webb leads SF Giants over Mets with eight-inning gem

SAN FRANCISCO — Word to the rest of baseball: Logan Webb is on a roll. So, too, was his opponent Tuesday evening, Luis Severino, and in a battle to see which starter would break first, Webb outlasted the Mets right-hander to guide the way to a 5-1 win, only the third time all season the Giants have prevailed in consecutive games. Webb walked off the mound for the final time to a standing ovation from the paid attendance of 25,453, saluting him for eight scoreless innings. He scattered six hits, walked one and more or less mowed through the Mets lineup before handing off a comfortable lead to Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval for the final three outs. The Giants’ winning streak with their ace on the hill grew to four, with Webb going at least seven innings in all of them. Dating back to the one run he allowed in a win over the Rays last Saturday, Webb has reeled off 19 consecutive scoreless innings and has a 0.93 ERA since the Giants last lost one of his starts. “It’s huge for any team

PLEASANT HILL — Five months after he was surprisingly let go by Miramonte, the school he led to its first North Coast Section title since 2013 last fall, Jack Schram has a new job. Schram has been hired as the head coach at College Park, he confirmed to the Bay Area News Group on Tuesday night. The 61-year-old Schram will be College Park’s fourth head coach in five years. He replaces Casey Moreno, who led the Pleasant Hill school to a 4-6 record in his only season with the program. Moreno was recently hired to be the head coach at St. Mary’s-Berkeley, which had a vacancy after John Trotman left to become the head coach at Castro Valley. For Schram, his new school is only 20 minutes from his previous one. “I’m excited to see the number of players that are going to come out and play,” Schram said. “I’ve kind of always coached at the smallest schools for a long time. To now be in a place with over 2,000 students, I’m trying to get the numbers up and compete. I’m looking forward to

UN calls for investigation into mass graves uncovered at two Gaza hospitals raided by Israel

By EDITH M. LEDERER (Associated Press) UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations called Tuesday for “a clear, transparent and credible investigation” of mass graves uncovered at two major hospitals in war-torn Gaza that were raided by Israeli troops. Credible investigators must have access to the sites, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters, and added that more journalists need to be able to work safely in Gaza to report on the facts. Earlier Tuesday, U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk said he was “horrified” by the destruction of the Shifa medical center in Gaza City and Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis as well as the reported discovery of mass graves in and around the facilities after the Israelis left. He called for independent and transparent investigations into the deaths, saying that “given the prevailing climate of impunity, this should include international investigators.” “Hospitals are entitled to very special protection under international humanitarian law,” Türk said. “And the intentional killing of civilians, detainees and others who are ‘hors de combat’ (incapable of engaging in combat) is a war crime.” U.S. State Department
