Woman found dead inside Sunland trash bin identified

The Los Angeles medical examiner has identified a 32-year-old woman whose body was found inside a trash bin in Sunland on Tuesday morning. Aerial footage taken that day shows officers standing near the trash bin. (KTLA) The Los Angeles County medical examiner on Friday identified a woman whose body was discovered inside a trash bin this week in Sunland. The woman was identified as 32-year-old Heather Hass. A cause of death has not been disclosed. Her body was discovered Tuesday morning in the 8500 block of Wentworth Street after officers responded to a call from a resident, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon arrival, the officers discovered the body inside the trash bin. Helicopter video from KTLA-TV at the time of the discovery showed police investigating near a closed black bin at a curb in the neighborhood. William Elliot, a Sunland resident, told KNBC-TV that someone dumped the trash bin onto his property. He said he moved the bin to the street without knowing what was inside it but called police when something seemed off. “It smells bad and it was zip-tied and

Letters to Sports: What’s going on with the Dodgers’ broadcasters?

The letter last week is spot on. The constant banter between the occupants of the Dodgers broadcast booth has required me to mute the audio and watch the game in silence. Sometimes the subject is not even the game in progress, and they have been known to miss a play or two. I understand that each commentator has their own style. Having been raised on Vin Scully, who spoke to each of us like he was sitting beside us in our living room, we are pained by being ignored while the commentators talk to each other. Richard Rorex Apple Valley :: I am in complete agreement with the Joe Davis-Orel Hershiser talk show antics that fall way short of the incredibly high bar set by Vin Scully. However, fans with a similar opinion will not find the Dodgers brass, either individually or collectively, responsive to their calls for change. Over the years I’ve written to everyone ranging from each Guggenheim group member to Stan Kasten, and never once had so much as an acknowledgment. Fans only receive attention when the Dodgers press takes a negative

House to vote on aid bills for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

By Caitlin Yilek April 20, 2024 / 7:21 AM EDT / CBS News House votes set for foreign aid, TikTok House votes set for foreign aid bills, TikTok forced sale 03:49 Washington — The House is set to vote Saturday afternoon on a $95 billion foreign aid package, a pivotal moment for House Speaker Mike Johnson as he tries to stave off a right-wing rebellion.  The package consists of four bills that will be voted on separately and then combined into one before being sent to the Senate. The first three bills include $60.8 billion to help Ukraine in its war with Russia; $26.4 billion to support Israel, which is fighting Hamas and Iran; and $8.1 billion to counter China in the Indo-Pacific. Humanitarian aid for Gaza, which Democrats said was necessary for their support, is also included.  The fourth bill would allow the sale of frozen assets of Russian oligarchs to help fund future aid to Ukraine, potentially force the sale of TikTok and authorize stricter sanctions on Russia, China and Iran.  The speaker said separating the bills will allow members to vote their

Local women saddle up for Round-Up slack; top 36 barrel racers move on to weekend competition

The final slack competition before the Red Bluff Roundup was to kick off on Friday night was the barrel racing slack, which included 115 participants. Among those participants were 14 women from Butte, Glenn and Tehama counties who are attempting to get into the weekend festivities. The top 36 competitors from the field qualified for the weekend, and one of those was Red Bluff’s Miley Bravos. Bravos was also set to compete in Friday night’s breakaway roping event. Bravos turned in a barrel racing time of 17.56 on Thursday morning, which qualifies her for this weekend’s event. Another Red Bluff contestant who took part in Thursday’s events was 19-year-old Kamish Wagner. She has been competing in rodeos since she was 3 years old. Wagner didn’t qualify for the top 36, but she did gain some valuable experience competing in her hometown rodeo. She also competed in Thursday’s breakaway roping, but the calf she got wasn’t to draw. She said that she threw her shot, and it just didn’t work out. On Friday morning, her first run of 18.44 wasn’t what she hoped for, but she

‘Hating America, 101’ a course for a homegrown terrorist?

“Death to Israel!” “Death to America!” It sounds like something you’d hear chanted by hundreds of brainwashed young people in the streets of Tehran. But as we saw this week, those are the chants of our own children on college campuses. People can agree or disagree on what the Israeli military is doing to the Palestinians in Gaza to punish Hamas for its attack on Oct. 7, or what our State Department is doing wrong in the Middle East. And am I seriously worried about Joe Biden’s weak, confused and destructive foreign policy in the Middle East – and everywhere else? Absolutely. But what terrifies me the most – and saddens me the most – is that we are now seeing crowds of our young people calling for the death of America. I am terrified of what’s going on in Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. Those Middle American places – what I’d be calling “Gaza West” if I were president – have become breeding grounds for what, in my mind, look like future homegrown terrorists. We have generously allowed tens of thousands of people from the

Tehama County receives $14.1 million for homeless housing

RED BLUFF— The state recently awarded Tehama County $14.1 million to help move people out of encampments and into housing. The awards, totalling approximately $192 million, are part of the state’s Encampment Resolution Fund grants administered by the California Interagency Council on Homelessness. According to the state, these grants will support 20 projects in 17 California communities aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness transition from encampments into housing. Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Tomiquia Moss said these grants show what is possible when the state partners with local communities to put people first and provide them with services to put them on the path to safe, stable housing. “This approach focuses on providing the person-centered local solutions that will ensure that unsheltered Californians are connected to the appropriate housing and supportive services they need to achieve long-term stability,” she added. Cal ICH Executive Officer Meghan Marshall shared that all 17 communities had strong proposals for helping people transition from encampments to pathways to housing. “While these grants will be made by our sister Department of Housing and Community Development, Cal ICH looks forward

Tehama County Cattlemen’s golf game was cold but no rain| Barton

Friday and Sunday were warm, sunny days, while the Tehama County Cattlemen’s 18-hole Golf Game on Saturday, April 6, had a cold South wind and mostly clouds, but it wasn’t raining at Wilcox Oaks Golf Course. Several of the golfers were in shorts and short sleeves, while I was bundled in a vest and zipper-closed down jacket. It took a couple of hours to thaw out after riding with Hailey Pritchard and Catherine Compston in the beverage cart to get some pictures of the hardy golfers. Hailey and Catherine are Tehama County CattleWomen members. The team winners were Tim Kuhn, Ryland Sanders, Larry La France, and Chris Chapin, who scored a 53 for $400 and first place. Their team was sponsored by Los Molinos ACE Hardware. Clint Brewer, Jason Smith, Nick Fowler, and Wyatt Williams, who scored a 54, took second place and $300. Third place and $200 went to the team from Corning Ford, which included Frances Hopping, Tom Voorhees, Ryan Holland, and Ryan Hake, who scored a 62. LAPD seeks public’s help identifying driver, victims in street takeover hit-and-run

The Los Angeles Police Department is offering a $25,000 reward for information about a South L.A. street takeover where a driver struck several pedestrians, including two women, then fled the scene. Police are also trying to determine whether one of those women is still alive. At a Friday morning news conference, LAPD Det. Ryan Moreno said investigators are trying to identify the hit-and-run driver and the pedestrians who were struck during the April 13 takeover, especially a woman who was seen in videos unconscious and bleeding on the ground. “Some of our investigators … intercepted some chatter that led us to believe that there’s a slight chance that this girl may be dead,” Moreno told reporters outside the LAPD South Traffic Division. “We don’t know who she is, where she is or how serious her injuries are.” According to an advisory, the illegal street takeover occurred at the intersection of Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street. The department said the woman was standing in the middle of the street when the driver of an Infiniti G37 struck her and others before fleeing. The force of

L.A. teen’s death caused by fall down stairs, not school fight, autopsy report finds

After the death of a 16-year-old girl last month, questions swirled as to the cause: Was it an accident, as Los Angeles County officials initially ruled, or the result of injuries suffered during a school fight that was caught on video? But the final autopsy report for Shaylee Mejia, released Friday in response to a public records request, determined there was no link between the fight — during which she appeared to slam her head into a wall — and her death from a head injury on March 15. The report instead cited injuries she suffered after falling down some stairs, days after the fight took place. “The medical records of her hospital admission beginning on March 10, 2024, after her fall down the stairs, document acute traumatic findings,” the report said. “There is no evidence to suggest that her traumatic head injuries resulting in her hospitalization … were due to the physical alteration (sic) that occurred days prior.” But Luis Carrillo, a civil rights attorney representing Shaylee’s mother, took issue with the final autopsy report, especially the determination that the school fight was not

There are plenty of ‘ifs’ that matter in Lakers-Nuggets playoff series

DENVER —  History says the Lakers are in trouble. Asked about the matchup involving the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets, one Eastern Conference executive quickly responded, the three dots on the phone barely registering. “Bad for the Lakers!” he replied. Eight consecutive losses to a team probably makes that punctuation appropriate if not a bit of an undersell. Denver is, of course, the higher-seeded team. Denver has, of course, mile-high home-court advantage. Denver has, of course, Nikola Jokic and his unofficial crown as the best player in the league. And Denver, is, of course, the NBA’s reigning champion, having swept the Lakers in the Western Conference finals last spring. So how do the Lakers pull this off, a series win that would undoubtedly be an upset? It all comes down to a single word, just two letters, and a bunch of stuff going right. If LeBron James is healthy, he’s a difference-maker … It probably has not been discussed enough when looking at last season, that James played through the postseason with a serious foot injury, a torn ligament, that he suffered after the All-Star break.
