The 5 tracks you need to hear from Taylor Swift’s surprise ‘Tortured Poets’ companion

Taylor Swift just can’t stop. Two hours after she dropped her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” late Thursday night, the pop superstar revealed that the LP’s 16 tracks represent just half of what she described as “a secret DOUBLE album.” The other half, she added, comprises 15 more songs and completes a massive collection called “The Anthology” that’s all but certain to take up nearly one-third of Billboard’s Hot 100 when its tracks hit the charts. On first listen, the bonus material mostly lives up (or down) to its billing — big outtake energy, in other words, as in “Cassandra,” which hits like a lesser version of Swift’s “Cardigan” (from 2020’s “Folklore”) and “The Prophecy,” which suggests that Taylor might be a serious Sufjan Stevens fan . Still, a handful of cuts stand out. Here are five to savor: ‘So High School’ Inspired, one presumes, by Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce, this fuzzed-out guitar jam about watching “American Pie” on a Saturday night is exactly what it would sound like if the indie-rock band Alvvays covered Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday.” (Speaking of secret

Colorado group falls short in effort to put anti-abortion measure on the ballot

By Shawna Mizelle April 19, 2024 / 7:08 PM EDT / CBS News Arizona GOP split on abortion ban repeal Arizona Republicans split on effort to repeal 1864 abortion ban 02:39 Colorado organizers who sought to put an anti-abortion initiative on the ballot this November failed to gather enough signatures in time to qualify. The proposed measure from the Colorado Life Initiative sought to declare “a living human child must not be intentionally dismembered, mutilated, poisoned, scalded, starved, stabbed, given toxic injections known to cause death, left to die of the elements for lack of warmth or nutrition, used for experimentation, or treated in any way inhumanely to cause intentional physical harm leading to intended death or intended to cause disability to otherwise healthy and functioning parts of the body of a child.” For the purposes of the group’s initiative, a “living human child” exists “from the moment human life biologically begins at conception,” according to its website.  The group needed to collect 124,238 signatures by the April 18 deadline. Faye Barnhart, co-sponsor of the measure, told CBS News that the group had collected “tens

Trump campaign, RNC aim to send 100,000 volunteer vote-counting monitors

By Olivia Rinaldi April 19, 2024 / 6:27 PM EDT / CBS News Impact of Trump trial on his 2024 campaign Trump’s trial will impact his ability to campaign for president 03:30 The Republican National Committee and former President Donald Trump’s campaign announced a new initiative Friday to deploy thousands to monitor vote counting in battleground states during the presidential election.  The Republican Party aims to recruit 100,000 volunteers to observe the voting process and report irregularities, as well as lawyers to provide rapid-response services if there are issues in the vote counting.  “The RNC is hiring hundreds of election integrity staff across the map – more than ever before because our Party will be recruiting thousands of more observers to protect the vote in 2024,”  said Lara Trump, RNC co-chair, in a press release. “These campaign officials in states are tasked with recruiting, training, and when possible, shifting poll watchers and poll workers day in and day out.” The operation plans to set up an “Election Integrity Hotline” in every battleground state and create a command center for lawyers to respond to reports from

He was seen walking into the Oakland Tribune tower, then disappeared until a grisly discovery in the hills. Police say they now have the answers

Julio Chavez-Montoya’s life centered on three things: religion, family, and the most iconic building in the city of Oakland. Chavez-Montoya spent his weekdays in the basement or the boiler room of the Oakland Tribune Tower, where he worked as a maintenance man. When quitting time rolled around he’d catch an elevator to the 10th floor, where he lived in a one-room flat containing the mattress pad where he slept, a small table where he dined, and a journal he used — as police would later learn — to confide his concerns and fears. He deviated from this routine on Sundays, when he’d hop on his bicycle and six miles each way to attend church. But in late January 2023, Chavez-Montoya went from living this life of predictability to simply vanishing without a trace. Five months later, his skeleton was discovered in the hills near the Oakland Zoo, with seemingly no explanation of how it got there. Surveillance cameras are focused on the entrances and exits of the Tribune Tower, and saw him entering the building on Jan. 27, 2023, but never captured him walking out

California gas prices are spiking again, what’s going on?

It just might be time to buy an electric vehicle. Or a bike. Gas prices are spiking again in the Bay Area — as much as 20 to 30 cents a gallon higher than the California average and at least $2 a gallon more than the rest of the country, according to the latest data from the American Automobile Association (AAA). The national average on Friday was $3.67 a gallon, compared to the Golden State’s $5.45, the highest in the U.S., according to AAA. Bay Area drivers who are sometimes stuck paying close to $6 a gallon said they are suffering and finding alternate ways to get around. Frank Auguston filled his tank at a Chevron gas station in Danville where prices spilled over $6 a gallon Wednesday. “Gas is stupid expensive,” he said. Linda Franklin was similarly annoyed. “I’m seriously thinking about buying an EV,” she said while putting gas in her Mazda at a Chevron station in San Jose on Wednesday. “I can’t afford these prices with my commute to Walnut Creek.” But why does opening your wallet at the gas station become

Investigation underway after former SF Giants coach posts video showing him in inflight cockpit

Authorities are investigating how a former Giants coach, now on the Colorado Rockies’ staff, made his way into the cockpit during a team charter flight from Denver to Toronto this month, according to published reports. Hensley Meulens, the Giants’ hitting coach during their run to three World Series championships a decade ago, brought attention to the situation when he posted a video on social media this week that appeared to show him sitting in one of the two pilot seats during the United Airlines flight on April 10. The video, which went viral, has been deleted. “Had some fun in the cockpit on our flight from Denver to Toronto,” Meulens, nicknamed “Bam Bam,” wrote in the video caption. “Thanks to the captain and the first officer of our United charter that allowed me this great experience.” In the video, Meulens is heard saying while gesturing to a uniformed person next to him, “Flying the plane, here to Toronto. I’m going to land the plane tonight. So relax.” The Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines are investigating how Meulens got into the cockpit, according to the Wall

But he was best known as an advocate for students in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Navarro spent three decades helping families navigate the student discipline system or getting struggling students the academic help they needed. He also held local office, serving on both the San Bernardino County school board and San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District board, running into legal trouble when he sought to

Giancarlo Esposito thought, at his lowest, about how his own murder might benefit his kids

Giancarlo Esposito knows — people think everyone who is on TV or in the movies is rich, and will always stay that way. But it’s not always so, by a long shot. In fact, the “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” villain’s imagination went pretty darn dark when his own times were tough. It was a while back, before those two Vince Gilligan series cemented him as a famous face, and there wasn’t much money coming in, he said on a recent episode of the “Jim and Sam Show” podcast with comic Jim Norton and radio and WWE personality Sam Roberts. He had to file for bankruptcy. The then-married father of four said he started thinking about the circumstances under which his insurance policy might pay out to his family. Would suicide work? Well, that gets complicated, said his wife, whose father was in the insurance biz — hence the ample policy Esposito had at the time. So skip that. “I just started scheming — if I got someone to knock me off, death through misadventure,” the 65-year-old said, his family might get the money.

Eric Braeden of ‘Young and the Restless’ nominated for first Daytime Emmy in 20 years

Eric Braeden, the actor who has spent 40-plus years playing self-made businessman Victor Newman on “The Young and the Restless,” has just been honored with his 10th Daytime Emmy nomination — two decades after his first win. Braeden, nominated for lead performance in a daytime drama series, hasn’t been recognized for his role since 2004, as he has routinely declined to submit himself for the Emmys in the years since. He has collected 10 Emmy nods for his role in “Y&R,” including a 2002 dual nomination for him and co-star Melody Thomas Scott, who plays Victor’s long-term love interest Nikki Reed. Scott presented Braeden with his first Emmy in 1998, on the set of “The Young and the Restless.” “I have to tell you, when Mel gave it to me on the set, I had no clue that she was going to do that,” he said in a behind-the-scenes interview at the time. “I couldn’t have received it from a person that I would have more liked to have received it from.” Scott Clifton, John McCook and Thorsten Kaye of “The Bold and the Beautiful”

How accurate is a new movie about the real-life spies who inspired Bond? We checked

Warning: The following contains spoilers from “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” Although the events of World War II have been extensively studied, details are still emerging. In fact, documents concerning an essential mission, dubbed Operation Postmaster and undertaken by the British War Office, were only recently declassified. The mission, carried out by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), is the unlikely subject of Guy Ritchie’s latest film, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” Now in theaters the film, written by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, is based on Damien Lewis’s 2014 book “Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII.” However, it takes some dramatic license in its depiction of the events. “The story itself and the elements are true,” Amel says, noting that some characters are amalgamations to serve a two-hour narrative. “Not only was it untold history, with men on a mission against all odds who became the forerunners of James Bond, but it was a coming together of this multicultural coalition of the misfits. It wasn’t just your classical story of the British fighting the

After fatal Newport Beach home invasion, 24-year-old faces burglary, robbery charges

A 24-year-old man accused of breaking into a Newport Beach home in a robbery that left him with a gunshot wound and a second suspect dead has been charged in connection with the incident, according to Orange County Superior Court records. Andrew Miguel Rosas is facing charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, carrying a loaded firearm in public and conspiring to commit a crime, all felonies. He has not yet entered a plea. Rosas, who remains hospitalized, appeared in court on video this week, court records show. Police were summoned to a house near Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road North at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday by a 911 call about a home invasion in progress. The house was at the north end of Vista Luci cul-de-sac. A few minutes into the emergency call, the caller said one of the residents inside the home shot a suspect, according to a police report. During a brief on-scene news conference, police confirmed that the homeowner shot at one of the two burglary suspects, KTLA-TV reported. When officers arrived, they discovered Rosas lying in the street with injuries

Los Angeles white supremacist sentenced to federal prison on gun charges

A Los Angeles man with a history of associating with a violent white supremacist group has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison. Ryan Scott Bradford, 35, of Reseda, was sentenced Friday to 57 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition and possessing eight “conversion devices” that allow for semi-automatic firearms to function as machine guns. He previously pleaded guilty to the federal weapons charges in January. Bradford is a known associate of an extremist white supremacist group in the San Fernando Valley, prosecutors said in a criminal affidavit filed last year. Using an online moniker that referenced his affiliation with the group, Bradford would post racist messages targeting Jewish people, including calling for “mass murder and genocide of Jews,” according to the United States Department of Justice. He also posted links on the messaging platform Telegram, which included instruction manuals for hand grenades, information about biological warfare, and calling for an “Aryan Revolution.” The DOJ said he also offered to make firearms and firearm parts for others using 3D printers. Bradford’s home was raided last July by

Hi Disneyland! We found your money

LOS ANGELES – Most states have programs to track unclaimed money and property, and California is no exception. Here, the Unclaimed Property division is run by the California State Controller.
