3 separate crime scenes, with 3 dead, traced to one L.A. wife and mother, source says

Police spent Monday following a bizarre and tragic trail of violence that left the dead and injured bodies of a Woodland Hills family scattered across Los Angeles County. The horror began with a woman killing her husband at their Valley home, abandoning her two small daughters on the 405 Freeway — one of whom died — and then fatally crashing her car into a tree in Redondo Beach, according to a law enforcement source who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation. The first sign of the family tragedy turned up around 4:30 a.m. Monday. That’s when officers were called to the northbound 405 Freeway near the Sepulveda Boulevard/Howard Hughes Parkway exit, according to the California Highway Patrol. An infant girl about 5 or 6 months old was found in the roadway, and a 9-year-old girl was found on the right shoulder. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene, and the girl was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, the law enforcement source said. A 911 caller reported seeing a black sedan near where the girls were found, according to media

Rough start: Erratic and rusty, Blake Snell lasts only three innings in SF Giants debut

SAN FRANCISCO — Blake Snell tried shaking off the rust, but it looked superglued to his $62-million left arm. Making his San Francisco Giants debut at Oracle Park on Monday night, Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner who didn’t sign with the Giants until March 19, looked like a pitcher making his first spring training start. Except this one actually counted. Snell couldn’t find the strike zone as he labored through three innings, throwing 39 strikes on 72 pitches before the Giants (4-7) pulled the plug in an eventual 8-1 loss to the Washington Nationals (4-6). “It was just weird,” Snell said. “I haven’t faced any big league hitters. I was aware of that. I was being more careful than I usually would. I usually would just throw it over the plate and let it eat. But I haven’t faced big league hitters so, I don’t really know. And I was really amped up. I was really excited to pitch. Bad combination I guess.” Before Monday, Snell hadn’t pitched in a big league game since last September, when he tossed six shutout

Prep roundup: Benicia dominates another softball opponent, improves to 8-0

No. 10 Benicia 10, Sheldon-Sacramento 0 (5 innings) Another game, another dominating result for Benicia. The Panthers stretched their season-opening winning streak to eight games on Monday, blowing out a seventh consecutive opponent behind balanced hitting and Sinead Maas’ superb pitching. Benicia scored two in the visitor’s half of the first inning and added six more in the second to put away its Sacramento opponent. Suae Beatty, Ava Rojas, Aryanna Banks-Lockhart, Emma French and Ava Pannell each had two hits as Benicia dropped Sheldon’s record to 10-4. The Panthers have not trailed all season and only one team — Liberty, in the opener — had a shot going to the final inning. But after Liberty tied the score in the sixth, Benicia responded with two in the seventh to win. The Panthers have not looked back. Including the 7-5 victory over Liberty, they have outscored their eight opponents 99-13, which is about the same level of dominance top-ranked St. Francis has had this season. The undefeated Mountain View powerhouse has outscored its 13 opponents 96-11. In Benicia’s win Monday, Banks-Lockhart doubled and knocked in two runs

UConn smothers Purdue defensively on its way to Huskies’ second straight national championship

By JOHN MARSHALL (AP Basketball Writer) GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — UConn left Donovan Clingan on the loneliest island, stuck deep in the paint to wrestle massive Purdue center Zach Edey. Even when Edey bulled his way to shots at the rim, the Huskies refused to give their big man help, knowing the two-time national player of the year would get his points. UConn had a much bigger concern than the 7-foot-4 man in the middle: Purdue’s perimeter shooters. And, boy, did the Huskies shut them down. Chasing the Boilermakers off the arc all night, UConn held one of the nation’s best 3-point shooting teams to one made 3 and became the first team since 2007 to repeat as national champions with a 75-60 win on Monday night. UConn has become one of the nation’s most efficient offensive teams under coach Dan Hurley, finishing No. 1 in KenPom.com’s efficiency ratings this season. But with that, the Huskies are a gritty, downright dominating defensive team. UConn held its first four NCAA Tournament opponents under 60 points and limited Alabama, the nation’s highest-scoring team, to 72 points in

Trial Set to Begin for Man Charged with Killing Former Classmate

Six years after charges were filed, testimony is set to begin Tuesday in the trial of a man charged with killing a gay former high school classmate. Woodward is charged with murder with sentencing enhancements for a hate crime and the personal use of a deadly weapon. He was last seen the day before at their home in Foothill Ranch. The University of Pennsylvania student was home for the holidays and went to bed, but went out without his parents knowing. His parents figured he was “sleeping in” and left that morning without checking in on him, Senior Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Walker said in court papers. When their son did not respond to text messages or calls by the afternoon about a missed dental appointment the parents returned home and found his wallet, glasses

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 11:53 PM EDT / CBS/AP The Connecticut Huskies are the 2024 NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball champions after defeating the Purdue Boilermakers 75-60 in the Championship Game on Monday night. The Huskies went into halftime with a six-point lead, but a dominant defensive performance early in the second half, holding Purdue to just 10 points in over 10 minutes of play, allowed Connecticut to break away. The Huskies won every game in the tournament by more than 10 points. This is UConn’s sixth men’s basketball title and second championship in a row. The Huskies are the first men’s basketball team to repeat as champions since the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007. James Outman blasts away his slump with home run in Dodgers’ win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS —  After two straight days spent out of the starting lineup, then two straight strikeouts to start Monday night’s game, James Outman’s season-opening slump had reached a nadir entering the seventh inning at Target Field. Then, with one hanging slider and one cathartic swing, the Dodgers’ second-year center fielder finally found a reprieve. In a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins, it was Outman’s solo shot that put the Dodgers in front for good, a towering 353-foot fly ball that sailed just high enough to clear a tall wall in the right-field corner. It didn’t give Outman the biggest night offensively, not after Shohei Ohtani recorded his fifth straight multihit game by doubling twice early and homering for the third time this season later in the seventh inning. Still, following a four-for-34 start, Outman’s contribution might have been the most important development Monday — not only to the final score, but also the trajectory of what had been a slow start to his second big league season. “It felt good to see a ball land,” said Outman, who had been robbed on several hard-hit balls

Missing dog from California found more than 2,000 miles away in Michigan

A California family has finally been reunited with their fur baby after the terrier mix went missing over seven months ago. But that’s not all to the story, she was found more than 2,000 miles away in Michigan. The dog named Mishka was at her owner’s auto shop in July 2023 when she went missing. The owner, Mehrad Houman, and his family live in San Diego. When his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter got the call that Mishka went missing, they told Nexstar’s KSWB that they immediately flew back from their vacation in Minneapolis and started putting up flyers. They said they never expected her to be missing for so long since she is microchipped and has a collar with the family’s phone number on it. “We never gave up hope,” Elizabeth said. Mishka remained missing for over seven months before turning up thousands of miles away in Detroit, Michigan. “I put up over a thousand flyers within a few months. I put a flyer on my back windshield just to put it out there. I wore her leash, so if I saw her I

In need of more teachers, L.A. County offers free schooling and on-the-job training

Los Angeles County is in need of more teachers. Right now, there’s more than 725,000 students under the age of five and not nearly enough educators to keep up, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). In hopes of enticing and recruiting more early childhood educators, L.A. County is providing 90 interested individuals with free schooling and training so they can start debt-free careers as teachers. The County’s 2-year Early Care and Education Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship Program is part of DEO’s investment into the state’s High Road Training Partnerships (HRTPs) initiative. The programs are funded by money set aside from the American Rescue Plan and administered by DEO. Officials say 90 Los Angeles County residents will have the opportunity to receive free community college education and on-the-job training that will ultimately result in a California State-issued child development permit. Those accepted into the apprenticeship program receive 180 hours of classroom training at local colleges and 2,000 hours paid “site-based experiential learning” that is subsidized in part by DEO. Apprentices will also have access to additional training resources and supportives services offered
