California among dozens of states waiting for Congress to decide on permanent Daylight Saving Time

If you abhor Daylight Saving Time (DST) and the havoc it wreaks on your sleep schedule, there’s a good chance your state does, too. This year, 32 states have proposed legislation to make daylight saving permanent — as in more sunlight year-round. Eight states have already passed bills to stop springing forward and keep that precious hour of sleep. It’s just up to Congress to approve them. And so far, addressing daylight saving time hasn’t been a federal priority. Many states have proposed making DST permanent in favor of more sunshine. Initially created to conserve energy, springing to more sunlight reduces crime and car accidents, according to the US Department of Transportation. Instating permanent DST may also mean our circadian rhythms won’t be thrown off en masse every November and March. Only two states have successfully shunned springing forward: Arizona and Hawaii. Most of Arizona stopped observing it more than 50 years ago and remains in Mountain Standard Time all year (though the Navajo Nation does observe it). And Hawaii hasn’t followed it since becoming a state — since it’s so close to the equator, the sun shines for basically the same amount of…

Major gun safety group endorses Joe Biden’s presidential bid

Joe Biden has received the endorsement of one of the nation’s largest gun control advocacy groups, Everytown for Gun Safety, in the latest sign that Bernie Sanders’ spotty record on guns may be weighing him down in the presidential primary. Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund plans to spend $60 million on electoral activities this cycle, some of which will go toward trying to elect Biden. An Everytown spokesman said the group typically airs advertisements and engages in grassroots organizing for the candidates it endorses, though it’s unclear when the group will begin to spend on Biden’s behalf. The group, which was co-founded by billionaire former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, also boasts 6 million supporters and more than 375,000 grassroots donors, numbers that could help boost attention and support for Biden’s presidential bid nationwide. In an interview with The Associated Press, John Feinblatt, head of Everytown for Gun Safety, said the group chose Biden because working for gun control is “his past, it’s his present, it’s his future.” Asked if Sanders’ record on gun control factored into the group’s decision, Feinblatt said that the group…

10 Cal State Long Beach students self-isolating over concerns of possible COVID-19 exposure

Ten Cal State Long Beach students are self-isolating amid concerns they may have been exposed to coronavirus during a recent event in Washington, D.C., officials announced Sunday. College officials said the students have not shown any symptoms after attending an event last week in Washington, D.C., where three attendees — who are not connected to the campus — tested positive for COVID-19, which is caused by the new coronavirus. The self-isolation is being done “out of an abundance of caution,” Dr. Kimberly Fodran, co-director of student health services at the college, said in a prepared statement. The college did not specify what out-of-state event the students were attending. “Because one of our attendees at the event in Washington lives in student housing, that facility is also being specially cleaned as a preventative measure,” the statement read. “As noted in an email to campus yesterday, our campus has initiated additional cleaning protocols across campus.” Read the full story on LATimes.com.
