California begins digging out from monster blizzard as shuttered highways reopen

California’s Sierra Nevada on Monday began digging out from a monster blizzard that dumped several feet of snow on the mountain range and shuttered ski resorts from Lake Tahoe to Mammoth. The massive storm shuttered Highway 395 from Southern California to Mammoth Mountain and Interstate 80 to the northern Lake Tahoe area for much of the weekend because of whiteout conditions. The California Department of Transportation on Monday was able to reopen a key stretch of Highway 395 between Mammoth and northwest of Bishop. However, a 50-mile stretch of the highway remains closed north of Mammoth Mountain — all the way to Bridgeport — meaning road access to the ski resort from Reno remains closed. Caltrans crews were still clearing snow off the roadway Monday. Interstate 80 — the route to the northern Tahoe area — also reopened Monday to passenger traffic. Big rigs are still unable to use the road, which remains snow-covered and icy, according to the California Highway Patrol. Over the weekend, crews spent several hours rescuing trapped motorists whose vehicles were stuck in the snow on Interstate 80. Emergency personnel and

Police offer safety tips after burglars break into Newport Beach home

Two burglars smashed through a sliding glass door and ransacked a home in the Broadmoor Sea View Community of Newport Beach Wednesday evening, and police are using the opportunity to provide tips for keeping your home safe. The burglars used a hillside behind the home in the 1900 block of Yacht Colonia to get into the backyard, where they smashed the sliding glass door at about 9 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department said in a news release. Once inside, the burglars “rummaged through drawers in the master bedroom before fleeing the scene,” police said. The burglary was reported the next morning, though what was taken is “unknown at this time.” The two burglars wore dark clothing, hoodies and masks, and one of them had a backpack. Police offered several tips for keeping your home and neighborhood safe: Always lock your windows and doors when you go out, even if for only a few minutes. Second-story windows and doors should be secured as if they were on the first story. Use timers on indoor lamps to give the appearance that you are home. If you’re

Thousands watch, wait for Big Bear bald eagle eggs to hatch

Thousands of live streamers remain glued to their computers and mobile devices Monday waiting for one of Jackie and Shadow’s eggs to hatch in Big Bear. The bald eagle couple laid three eggs in late January and more than 30,000 fans were on a live stream at 9 a.m. hoping there would be a new baby chick. Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) has set up two live webcams (a Nest cam and a Wide View cam) on YouTube for fans to follow this year’s journey to parenthood for Jackie and Shadow. FOBBV announced the beginning of pip watch on Feb. 29 on its Instagram page. Pip refers to the holes a chick pokes in the egg when it’s getting ready to emerge.  “When a hole is poked through an egg’s membrane it is called the internal pip, and when a hole is pecked through the egg shell it is called the external pip,” journeynorth.org posted on its website. The couple’s nest is located in Big Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains and is about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine tree. One

A woman from Apple Valley was arrested for driving under the influence and cruelty to a child after she was found in a car with two intoxicated teenagers, authorities say.  According to a press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy J. Mora was traveling west on Bear Valley Road when he observed a black Dodge Challenger “swerving and hitting the curb.”  “The vehicle continued to swerve before making a northbound turn onto Pacoima Road,” the SBSD release said. “Deputy Mora stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver, [later identified as] Marissa Cardenas.”  Tesla plunges off overpass, catches fire after landing on 134 Freeway Cardenas was found to be under the influence of alcohol and an open container of malt liquor was found inside her vehicle, deputies said.   Also inside her vehicle were two 14-year-old boys who showed signs of “extreme intoxication,” SBSD confirmed.  The boys, who were confirmed to be Cardenas’ relatives by the sheriff’s department, were transported to a local hospital and later released into the custody of their parents.  Cardenas was arrested for cruelty to a child and driving

Sydney Sweeney laughs off rumors she lied about working as Universal Studios tour guide

During her monologue for “Saturday Night Live,” Sydney Sweeney humorously knocked down several pervasive internet rumors about her, including that she had a supposed “affair” with her “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell while engaged to someone else, or that her success and beauty is due to nutrition advice she received from a self-proclaimed dietician. The other pervasive internet rumor over the past couple months has been that the two-time Emmy nominee lied about landing a prestigious job as a tour guide at Universal Studios as a teenager. “Like I once said I worked at Universal Studios, and someone online accused me of lying about that,” Sweeney said while introducing herself as “SNL’s” latest host. “Which is insane,” Sweeney proclaimed. “If I didn’t work there, how would I know all of Universal’s characters like Shrok, the Munions and Harry Porter,” she joked, riffing on the names of Shrek, the Minions and Harry Potter. Sweeney’s Universal Studios mini-scandal erupted earlier this year. During multiple recent interviews, Sweeney offered up a rags-to-riches story about moving to Los Angeles with her family as a teenager, so she could

12 great Irish bars in the Bay Area to visit for St. Patrick’s Day 2024

To update that old saying, “Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, even if your 23andMe report says you haven’t got even a fifth cousin from the Emerald Isle.” Yes, we Americans love any excuse for a cultural celebration. This year the holiday falls on a Sunday, giving us a reason to devote the whole weekend to festivals, music, parades, corned beef — and a pint or two. Thanks to the Bay Area’s Irish history, there’s no shortage of pubs where Guinness and Smithwick’s mingle with IPAs and sours, and where millennial newcomers grab a bar stool next to longtime locals. Here are 12 spots to check out. Farrington’s, Pleasant Hill You know you’re in a nice Irish bar when the bartender whips out a fiddle to entertain patrons on St. Patrick’s Day. Farrington’s is your classic Irish sports bar plopped in a Contra Costa strip mall. The first thing you’ll notice is flat-screen TVs jutting at every angle – the place is quite serious about sports. Spokane in Spring: A Washington getaway offers historic and modern delights, restaurants

If you’ve ever read a book that is super place-specific and then visited that area immediately after, you’ll know how I felt on a recent trip to Spokane, Washington. I’d recently read Jess Walter’s 2020 best seller, “The Cold Millions,” a novel set during the labor and free speech demonstrations that exploded here in the early 1900s. Surfacing from the book’s pages into its real world setting evoked an eerie sense of deja vu, with the city’s modern self lightly superimposed over the historic landmarks that fill a reader’s imagination. Spokane is less touristy than other Pacific Northwest gems, and its mix of past and present makes it a delightful destination, even if you haven’t read “Cold Millions.” And there’s no better place to set up headquarters for your dive into the past than the Historic Davenport Hotel in downtown Spokane. This century-old, majestic beauty is a treasure. When it opened in 1914, it was the height of modernity, the first hotel in the country to offer air conditioning. Obviously, that’s not why you’ll be checking in here. You’re coming for the grandeur, the ornate

Interstate 80 remains closed through Sierra as threat of snow, showers linger for Northern California

Interstate 80 remained closed through the Sierra Nevada on Monday morning after a punishing blizzard that dropped several feet of snow across the Lake Tahoe region, limiting travel between the popular tourist spot and much of the rest of the state. A blizzard warning for the northern Sierra expired shortly before 12:30 a.m. Monday, and was replaced by the National Weather Service with a winter storm warning as the threat of snow continued to hound the region. Another 4 to 10 inches of powder was expected to fall over Donner Pass between Monday morning and early Wednesday morning, according to Dakari Anderson, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “We’re on the downtrend of things,” Anderson said. “Hopefully they will be able to get out there and really start to dig out of the snow.” While I-80 remained closed Monday morning, Highway 50 out of South Lake Tahoe remained open, albeit with chain restrictions. The storm system that swung into California from the Gulf of Alaska late last week marked the biggest dumping of snow for the Sierra Nevada this season, with remarkable totals at ski resorts

Police arrest juvenile suspected of shooting at California cop

A juvenile was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after police say he fired gunshots at an Anaheim officer, kicking off a multi-hour search for the alleged underage gunman. Officers around 1:45 a.m. contacted several people in the 300 block of Guinida Lane, in the area of Ball Road and the 5 Freeway, one of whom fired several shots before running away, Anaheim police Sgt. Jon McClintock said. No one was struck by the gunfire, the sergeant said, and the officers did not return fire. Additional officers were called to the scene, including members of the Anaheim Police Department’s tactical response unit. They searched the area for several hours, McClintock said. A detective spotted a family member of the suspected shooter driving out of the area, the sergeant said. A description of the vehicle was broadcast to surrounding law enforcement agencies. Around 3:15 p.m., Orange County Sheriff’s deputies located the suspected shooter in Mission Viejo and took him into custody, McClintock said. Since the suspected shooter is a juvenile, authorities did not release his name and declined to specify his exact age. He was expected to

More mountain snow expected even as powerful blizzard moves out of Northern California

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — A powerful blizzard that closed highways and ski resorts had moved through the Sierra Nevada by early Monday, but forecasters warned that more snow was on the way for the Northern California mountains. A long stretch of Interstate 80 from west of Lake Tahoe over Donner Summit to the Nevada state line finally reopened to all but big rigs late Monday morning, but chains or snow tires were required, the California Highway Patrol’s Truckee office said. Closures or chain requirements also affected other highways. More than 7 feet (2.1 meters) of snow fell in some locations and fierce winds lashed the Sierra over the weekend. The last blizzard warnings expired before dawn Monday, leaving a few light Sierra showers, but winter storm warnings were issued for a new, less powerful system due to arrive later in the day and last into Tuesday night, the National Weather Service said. The new system was expected to bring periods of moderate mountain snow. The weekend blizzard caused traffic backups and closures on I-80 and many other roadways, shut down ski resorts for two days

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A trash truck overturned on Interstate 5 near San Diego’s Bankers Hill neighborhood Monday, snarling traffic ahead of the morning commute. The crash was reported just before 6 a.m. near Hawthorn Street on the highway’s northbound No. 1 lane, according to California Highway Patrol logs. About 10 gallons of mixed oil and diesel spilled across the roadway after the truck rolled. Details about what caused the trash truck to overturn are unclear at this time. No injuries have been reported. A SigAlert was issued for motorists due to the congestion around the truck. Around 9 a.m., traffic remained down to one lane while crews worked to clean-up the scene. All lanes were reopened around 11:30 a.m., according to Caltrans. During the morning commute, reports showed the crash slowed motorists by upwards of 60 minutes through the area, jamming northbound traffic all the way to exits in Chula Vista. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
