Dreaming about vacation? Consider a beautiful pair of sunglasses

What is a dream if not a vacation for the mind? To get lost in a reverie is a momentary respite from the prison of the possible — a chance to experience the impossible for a second. If you can’t change your surroundings, you can at least change your perception of them. Vacations are dreams where you actually can change your surroundings. They’re fantasies of how you might live if you were a different person, with a different life and different priorities. A whirlwind romance, a chance meeting that could change your career prospects, a series of awful wardrobe choices that fortunately none of your friends or colleagues will ever see. It’s all possible on vacation. The greatest luxury of a vacation is the right to reinvent yourself, to see the world differently. And there’s no better way to see the world differently than through a beautiful pair of sunglasses. Marina del Rey gunman charged with attempted murder and assault

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office filed criminal charges Tuesday against a man it accuses of shooting multiple rounds at a Marina del Rey apartment complex. Prosecutors charged Victoryloc Nguyen, 41, with several counts of attempted murder and assault with a machine gun or assault weapon on a peace officer and civilians, one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and one count of first-degree residential burglary. Nguyen has pleaded not guilty to all charges, prosecutors said in a news release. During his first court appearance, Nguyen was seen smiling and made a heart with his hands, gesturing toward people in the courtroom, ABC7 reported. Dist. Atty. George Gascón accused Nguyen of carrying out a “senseless shooting rampage.” “Innocent civilians and law enforcement officers were callously targeted without provocation,” he said. Prosecutors alleged that at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Nguyen fired multiple shots throughout the Marina del Rey apartment complex in the 4100 block of Via Marina. “Nguyen was wearing a tactical vest and was armed with two assault weapons and a handgun,” prosecutors said in their statement. “He also carried multiple loaded magazines for

How Leslie Liao left Netflix’s HR department to become a rising star in stand-up

Pacing the stage, Leslie Liao muses about the various moisturizers she, an almost 37-year-old, feels compelled to use. “I spend most of my time rubbing creams all over my body. … Face cream, eye cream, foot cream, just constantly creaming myself.” She continues; a mic drop about modern dating imminent. “I just learned there is a neck cream. I have to cream my neck. … I overheard a man complaining once how he spends all his money on drinks for girls and it’s so unfair. Bro, I am wearing $300 worth of face paint and body jam to not scare you away. I’d like my Moscow mule now, please.” The crowd erupts with laughter. “That joke was a real conversation I had with a man years ago,” Liao says, seated outside at Jewel in Silver Lake. “He was really making the argument. He was like, ‘I would love if a girl bought me a drink.’ And then I went on this rant. I was like, ‘Do you know? I had to put on my face for you to even talk to me. I’m in debt.

Disneyland clears major hurdle in $1.9B expansion plans

The Anaheim City Council has given its preliminary approval of a measure allowing for the massive, $1.9 billion expansion of Disneyland, known as Disneyland Forward. City council members voted 7-0 in favor of the proposal early Wednesday morning following an 8-hour public hearing. It will face a final city council vote on May 7. Should the proposal be approved then, land use changes related to Disneyland Forward wouldn’t be implemented until 30 days later. Disney has ‘enough room for another Disneyland’ in Anaheim, park chairman says Many people, ranging from Anaheim residents and Disneyland cast members to officials from neighboring cities, took the opportunity to speak at Tuesday’s hearing, expressing both support and opposition to the expansion. The Disneyland Forward proposal is a 40-year agreement that would guide where and how future developments would occur, allowing for new attractions, shops and restaurants to be built within areas of the resort that Disney already owns and operates. Park attractions would be built alongside hotels on the west side of Disneyland Drive, along with buildings, shopping, dining and entertainment where the Toy Story Parking Area at Katella

The book’s latest adaptation is even driving traffic to the particular town in which it’s filmed, Atrani, a tiny seaside municipality with a local population of less than 1,000 people. Home-sharing site Airbnb said the miniseries, called “Ripley,” has led to a 93% increase in bookings in Ravello, a city about 15 minutes away from Atrani.  Bookings in nearby Minori also increased 62% on the weekend of the release of “Ripley,” compared with the same weekend one year earlier, according to Airbnb.  “It’s no surprise that a show as visually spectacular as ‘Ripley’ is inspiring viewers to explore the Amalfi Coast for their next getaway,” Amanda Cupples, general manager for Airbnb UK and Northern Europe, said in

Senate to convene for Mayorkas impeachment trial as Democrats eye quick end

By Kaia Hubbard April 17, 2024 / 10:05 AM EDT / CBS News How Mayorkas impeachment trial could play out How the Mayorkas impeachment trial could play out 05:46 Washington — The Senate is set to convene for the impeachment trial of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday afternoon, with the Democratic-led upper chamber obliged to take on the House GOP-backed impeachment effort. Senators will be sworn in as jurors at 1 p.m. for the proceedings, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said. How long the trial will last remains to be seen, but Democrats are hoping to bring it to a swift end. Schumer, a New York Democrat, announced that the upper chamber would convene in accordance with impeachment rules shortly after House Republican impeachment managers transmitted the articles of impeachment to the Senate on Tuesday. Sen. Patty Murray, a Washington Democrat and the president pro tempore of the chamber, will preside over the trial.  The House voted to impeach Mayorkas in February, and the Senate’s rules dictate that the upper chamber is compelled to convene as a court of impeachment after

Why a high-yield savings account is better than these 4 popular alternatives

By Jessica Walrack Edited By Angelica Leicht April 17, 2024 / 9:48 AM EDT / CBS News The right high-yield savings account could be your best option in today’s high-rate environment. Getty Images/iStockphoto Issues with elevated inflation and interest rates have made it hard for many Americans to make ends meet. However, one perk of the current environment is the higher yields on high-yield savings accounts (HYSAs). “Currently high-yield savings account rates are over 5% in some cases, while a standard savings account in a brick-and-mortar bank may be 0.1%,” says Jay Zigmont, Ph.D., certified financial planner, and founder of Childfree Wealth. And, high-yield savings accounts are a great place to keep your emergency savings and money for short-term goals, Zigmont says. Plus, these accounts offer the security of deposit insurance . “Your money is secure in a high-yield savings account, as it’s insured by the FDIC up to $250,000 for individual accounts and $500,000 for joint accounts,” says Erik Croak, certified financial planner, accredited

Weight loss drug Zepbound may help people with obstructive sleep apnea, drugmaker says

By Jen Christensen | CNN Zepbound, a popular weight loss drug, also seems to help people with obstructive sleep apnea, drugmaker Eli Lilly said Wednesday. Based on results from trials in people with sleep apnea, the company said it plans to submit the material to the US Food and Drug Administration to potentially expand the use of Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder that causes people to briefly stop breathing while they are sleeping, sometimes several times an hour. This condition can keep a person from feeling fully rested because their brain wakes them up when the body senses that they are no longer breathing. The disorder can also make people much more prone to developing other serious health problems such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. The World Health Organization estimates about 100 million people have this disorder globally. Take a hidden tour of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco’s Gothic masterpiece

It’s a blustery spring afternoon in San Francisco, and we are gathered for one of the first-ever behind the scenes tours of that Gothic wonder, Grace Cathedral. The seat of the Episcopal Diocese of California – and it holds the literal seat of its bishop, more on that in a bit – the cathedral is about two-thirds the size of Notre-Dame. With a similar Gothic Revival-style architecture with Northern French influence, it gives Parisian visitors deja vu, our guide says. It may look like a grand flourish sitting atop Nob Hill, but the cathedral is still under construction — as you’ll discover now that these tours have opened to the public. Built in 1862, the original structure was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and ensuring fire. Construction began on the current cathedral in 1927. Today, the vaulting near the ceiling is unfinished and some statue niches remain empty. “It has been said that a great cathedral is never finished, words that echo the unfinished work of the Spirit,” says Julie Knight, director of cultural membership and visitor experience. Grace will one day be completed, but in

Taste-Off: The best supermarket prosciutto — and the ones not worth the price

Prosciutto is prosciutto, right? It’s thinly sliced, dry cured pork that adds so much salty, buttery flavor to everything from sandwiches to pizza or a charcuterie board. It’s all pork, all salty, all aged. So why are there such huge differences between brands? First, it’s key to understand how prosciutto, whether it’s domestic or imported, is made. This pork is dry cured using salt over several months. In Italy, it must be aged for at least 13 months to be called prosciutto, but the best prosciuttos are aged much longer than that — up to 36 months. Aging concentrates the flavors and tenderizes the meat and fat. The longer the prosciutto ages, the better it becomes. The United States produces some great prosciutto, but as you might have guessed, some of the best store brands are imported from Northern Italy, either from Parma, home to Prosciutto Di Parma, or Friuli Venezia, home to San Daniele. Prosciutto from Di Parma comes from heritage pigs and tends to be salty and deep-flavored; prosciutto from San Daniele is sweeter and less salty. The best prosciutto is smooth and

Quick Cook: Banana Coffee Waffles start the weekend with flavorful style

Banana bread lovers will rejoice in this waffle-ized classic. This hearty (healthy… shhhhh!) breakfast is packed with  banana flavor and the nutty undertones one expects, but with a crisp texture and a little hint of coffee to ring in the morning. I’m reluctant to call out that this recipe is gluten-free and vegan for fear it will drop the bar thirty percent, as people tend to do for baked treats that fall into those two categories. But rest assured, you can keep that bar right where it is. The batter whips up in just a couple of minutes, and you can either eat these hot off the press or freeze them for popping into the toaster on rushed mornings. A pat of butter and warm maple syrup usually does the trick, or top them with yogurt or peanut butter and honey for an even more filling breakfast. Kids will go nuts for mini chocolate chips sprinkled over hot waffles. If you don’t have almond meal on hand, simply throw blanched almonds in the blender instead. You can use frozen bananas you’ve stashed away for a

A Pleasanton woman got a restraining order against her ex. He killed her five days before court hearing to make it permanent, police say

PLEASANTON — Just 10 days before she was killed by an angry ex-boyfriend, a Pleasanton woman described as a “devoted mother” had taken steps to protect herself and her family from harm. Jasmine Del Mar requested and was granted a temporary restraining order against 39-year-old Sean Barry, citing an incident where he discharged a firearm after an argument in their Pleasanton home. But Barry was undeterred. On March 7, five days before an Alameda County judge would have decided whether to make the order permanent, Del Mar called 911 to report that Barry illegally entered her home on Saginaw Circle, armed with an AR-15 rifle. The police dispatcher heard the sound of gunshots, then Del Mar yelling, “are you kidding me,” before the line went dead, authorities said. When law enforcement officers arrived at the home a short time later, they found Del Mar dead and Barry gone. Police located the car driven by Barry, an Oakland resident, and followed him onto Interstate 580, where his vehicle crashed near Castro Valley. Officers who had surrounded his car found him dead inside, along with the AR-15, in what

Shoppers lament loss of 99 Cents Only Stores, a lifeline for families on a budget

Shoppers are hurrying to their local 99 Cents Only Stores for last-minute deals before they’re gone for good. Joining fellow discount retailer Dollar Tree, which has announced plans to close 1,000 stores nationwide over the next several years, the 99 Cents Only brand is preparing to shutter its 371 locations across California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas by June 5. Shoppers funneled into a 99 Cents store on Arlington Avenue in Riverside on a recent afternoon, greeted by signs splayed outside the building announcing the closure and promising up to 30% discounts. Kimberly Harrison, who lives in Riverside, exited the store with a few snacks and some cooking and décor items. She said she’s a regular shopper at another Riverside location. “Oh, it’ll be sad,” she said of the pending closures. “It’ll be sad for the older folks; it’ll be sad for the moms who really need to shop here.” Just behind her, another shopper rushed to her car with a box of groceries in one arm and a toddler in the other. Tesla’s $99 self-driving: amazing, but stressful

Tesla recently slashed the price of its self-driving software. What used to cost $200 a month is now just $99. We decided to test out the upgrade, which can be done in seconds from a smartphone app or the screen inside a Tesla. This lower price tag means more people will be willing to try it out. In fact, Tesla has been giving customers a free 30-day trial to check it out. Tesla now calls the experience “Full Self Driving – Supervised” which is code for don’t take your eyes off the road or keep your hands too far from the wheel. Why? This software is amazing when it works, and it is terrifying and stressful at times. Once you activate self-driving, a blue line on the in-cabin screen tells you where the car wants to go, and text prompts like “changing out of the fast lane” tell you what the car is thinking. The car can follow your navigation route, change lanes, make turns and even park itself. If you hate parallel parking, the $99 a month might be a small price to pay.

Innocent driver struck, killed by motorist who ran red light: Los Angeles police

A young man was struck and killed by a speeding SUV that police say ran a red light in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles Tuesday night. The collision was reported around 11:15 p.m. when a black BMW SUV was traveling westbound on West Florence Avenue at a high rate of speed, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Gerald Chavarria confirmed. The SUV then slammed into the side of a gray sedan when it reached the Crenshaw Blvd. intersection. Police investigate a fatal crash that occurred on April 16, 2024, in South Los Angeles. (KTLA) “We have evidence that it [the SUV] ran the red light,” Chavarria said. The sedan spun out of control and came to a stop about 70 to 80 feet from the crash site, Chavarria said. The driver of the sedan, identified only as a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was detained in the back of a patrol vehicle. “We are going to talk to him and determine if any other crimes occurred other than the red light

Senators call for renewed Havana Syndrome assessment after 60 Minutes report

By Aliza Chasan, Michael Rey, Oriana Zill de Granados April 17, 2024 / 9:10 AM EDT / CBS News New Havana Syndrome evidence revealed Havana Syndrome evidence suggests who may be responsible for mysterious brain injuries 26:51 An ongoing, five-year 60 Minutes investigation into Havana Syndrome sparked new concerns in Washington.  The March 31 report broadcast on 60 Minutes revealed new evidence of a potential Russian nexus tied to mysterious illnesses suffered by U.S. national security officials. In response, a bipartisan group of lawmakers last week sent a letter to President Biden calling for a “renewed assessment by the U.S. government” of what officials call “anomalous health incidents.”  “At this time, we recognize that we must not let allegations carry more weight than evidence,” the members of Congress wrote. “However, the 60 Minutes piece presented compelling evidence that warrants further review.” The letter was signed by, among others, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees.  “There is no higher priority than the
