Warriors coast by Hornets for third straight win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Even though they were short-handed, the Warriors cruised past the eternally lottery-bound Charlotte Hornets. In his hometown, Steph Curry tallied 23 points and four assists. He and the Warriors turned the game into a layup line, outscoring the Hornets 64 to 38 in the paint. For their third straight win, Golden State beat Charlotte, 115-97. The Warriors (39-34) are now 3-1 on their current road trip, with a pair of wins in Florida, Friday night’s blowout, and one more matchup awaiting in San Antonio. They’ve been better on the road all season, and have now won 13 of their last 16 games away from the Chase Center. In their last three victories, the Warriors have held their opponent under 100 points. “We’re talking a little bit more,” Chris Paul said postgame. “Starting to get in the right spots. I think we’re showing what we’re capable of when we defend.” The Hornets are a team the Warriors are supposed to handle, and they did. To be the team they want to be, they’ll not only have to beat up overmatched opponents but also

‘More than just eggs and bunnies’

While the Easter holiday has become synonymous with candy-filled plastic eggs and bunnies, one local church took it upon themselves to remind folks of the true reason for the season — the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion.

Rain, injuries, ramp-ups put SF Giants’ pitching situation in flux

SAN DIEGO — It has been a hair under two years, 676 days to be exact, since Jordan Hicks last started a major-league game. Slated to debut in the San Francisco Giants’ rotation Saturday, the 27-year-old right-hander may be forced to wait another day. A steady stream of moisture is expected to arrive overnight and provide a rare dreary day in America’s finest city, potentially delaying Hicks’ long-awaited return to the starting rotation. “We have a good game plan for tomorrow. Hopefully, the weather is fine,” Hicks said Friday, before the Giants played their second game against the Padres under the more typical blue skies. “Let mother nature do its thing and then figure out the rest later. But I’m locked in.” There’s good reason for Hicks to be confident, despite being a bullpen arm — a good one — for the majority of his career. Since signing a four-year, $44 million deal this past winter, Hicks has repeatedly said he has always viewed himself as a starting pitcher — the role he held for the entirety of his amateur and minor-league career — but in

Fresno Unified School Board President calls superintendent search ‘rigged’

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The president of the Fresno Unified School Board is sounding the alarm as the district searches for a new superintendent to replace outgoing leader Bob Nelson. “Last week, a narrow majority of the board decided in closed session to forgo (an) external search for applicants and start with internal applicants,” Fresno Unified School District Board President Susan Wittrup. Wittrup says the decision to look at internal applicants came on the heels of this report by Leadership Associates. The school board hired the firm to conduct community listening sessions, asking stakeholders what they wanted to see in the superintendent. The firm then generated a report. It says residents want the next Fresno Unified leader to have “strong ties to the community.” But Wittrup claims that is not what residents said. “It was rigged. You know, it was rigged,” she said. “Their voices to ask for an external candidate — or fresh eyes — was not included in the report to the board. And I’m hearing that from more than just one or two people. Many people.” Board member Keshia Thomas says that

Good Sports: Selma native Richard Figueroa’s journey to NCAA National title

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — On the wrestling mat, Valley native Richard Figueroa has won everything, including a national championship. But his journey to the top almost ended when he nearly quit the sport. This March, Figueroa, a Selma High grad, claimed the national title at the NCAA Championships. “She gets up, he won! and i was like what? that’s when i fell to the ground did the sign of the cross, oh my god we won,” said Francis Barocio, Richard’s mom. As is tradition, Francis anxiously watched, with a firm grasp on her rosary. “I’m in the match with my kids, that’s just how i am,” said Francis. As a 4-time CIF state champion wrestler in her own right, his sister, Gracie, knew this day would come. “As soon as he gave us that like, oh he’s got it in the bag,” said Gracie. “We always believed Richard would do this so we’re not surprised,” said Zeke Jones, the head coach of the Sun Devils. To those on the outside, Richard’s title run may look like an upset. “Once i got to nationals and i

UNLV releases video of campus shooter killed by police after 3 professors shot dead

By KEN RITTER (Associated Press) LAS VEGAS (AP) — Images of a campus police officer diving behind a patrol vehicle to escape gunfire and then fatally shooting a gunman outside a building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, are among footage in newly released video of a deadly rampage that left three professors dead and a fourth badly wounded last December. The deadly shootout captured by campus surveillance cameras ended what authorities say was 10 minutes of terror unleashed by a 67-year-old former business professor from North Carolina whose applications to teach at UNLV had been rejected. The gunman, Anthony Polito, was armed with a legally purchased 9 mm handgun, carried nine bullet magazines, and had a target list of names, although none of the people shot was on that list, police said. The university on Thursday released 20 hours of footage from campus security and officer body cameras, along with more than an hour of recordings of 911 calls made to campus police. Sounds of the gunfire that killed three people in upper floors of the five-story business school sent people fleeing from

Peace and quiet called my name. I found it at a Turks and Caicos resort

Carol Ann Davidson | Tribune News Service (TNS) Noise is my nemesis, quiet being one of my cherished but most elusive of holy grails. So when deciding where to go for a much-needed vacation at the beginning of March, I decided to spend it at a luxury resort, The Somerset on Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Fingers crossed that I would find a modicum of peace and serenity. I had viewed online photos and videos of the property. It certainly looked beautiful, but would it achieve my high standards for low decibels? This was my third trip to T&C, my first to The Somerset. It’s not the newest “kid on the block” (it was built in 2006). Shinier “kids” have arrived on the scene — a few of which I have visited — but there is something more genteel, relaxed and intimate about this property. It immediately felt like home. The Somerset oozed charm, without the noisy bells and whistles that many resorts display, mistaking intense activity and helicoptering attention for thoughtful but unobtrusive service. The stunning pools are a swimmer’s dream. The

A’s pitcher Stripling had backup plan in finance before MLB career took off

MESA – Ten years ago, Ross Stripling was sitting at home unable to pitch, wondering if Tommy John elbow surgery had derailed his career. Stripling, then 24, was a promising prospect fighting to earn a spot as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ No. 5 starter after coming off a season with a 2.82 earned run average in 127.2 innings between High-A and Double-A. During that recovery time, Stripling, who is scheduled to start tonight for the Oakland A’s against the Cleveland Guardians, made strides toward a backup plan if his playing career didn’t pan out – working in personal finance. The Texas A&M graduate with a degree in business finance did not originally plan to go down that route. After growing up in Southlake, Texas, Stripling enrolled at A&M for its highly esteemed engineering program. After a while, he decided to switch gears and pursue a finance degree. He said he enjoyed the way finances looked toward the future instead of the past. The initial interest came from his family. Through the years, Stripling slowly gained knowledge from both of his grandfathers who actively invested in

Ebony Williams | (TNS) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution A trip across the pond has many amazing things to offer, like landmarks, history, food, art and museums — the experience alone can benefit the entire family. However, the No. 1 reason people don’t go on vacation is the cost. Being strapped for cash shouldn’t deny you the luxuries of experiencing European culture.
