Video released by Hamas of American from Chicago taken hostage at music festival on Oct. 7

NEW YORK — Family members are making a desperate plea after the release of a chilling new video of an American hostage in Gaza. Hamas released video of 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin of Chicago on Wednesday. His hand was blown off as he was abducted from the Nova Music Festival on October 7. It appears he recorded his message under duress — showing him with his head shaven and his dominant hand missing. But after 201 days, it appears to be proof of life of an American hostage in Gaza, and for his parents Jon and Rachel, it’s a new reason to fight. Hours later, they released their own video, pleading with negotiators to get back to the table and end the madness that has consumed the Middle East. “That includes Qatar, Egypt, the United States, Hamas, and Israel,” Jon Polin said. “Be brave, lean in, seize this moment and get a deal done to reunite all of us with our loved ones and end the suffering in this region.” Last week in Jerusalem, his parents described their frustration with the on again, off again negotiations

Shawarmaji restaurant brings Arab cuisine, hospitality to Downtown Oakland

By Jason Beal Wednesday, April 24, 2024 9:27PM Here’s how Shawarmaji brings Arab comfort food from the streets of Amman, Jordan to Oakland while giving back in the process. OAKLAND, Calif. — “Karam” is a guiding principle in Arab culture; the word means generosity and building a sense of community. It’s a mentality that’s woven into the mission of Shawarmaji restaurant in Downtown Oakland. “We always want to give people food, feed people,” said Mohammad Abutaha, the owner of Shawarmaji. “People appreciate things that are authentic.” Shawarmaji serves shawarma, falafels, and more from the streets of Amman, Jordan to California. The menu options feature Arab cuisine inspired by Abutaha’s upbringing. “My family is Palestinian,” shared Abutaha. “In 1948, my grandfather had to flee, and he went to Jordan and that’s where my dad was born and that’s where I grew up.” “My goal wasn’t to necessarily like take Arab food to the next level,” Abutaha added. “It was more of like sharing what people actually eat back home with people in the Bay Area to share a little bit of our heritage.” In addition to

Calls grow for Columbia University president to step down as protests spread nationwide

NEW YORK — National political leaders ratcheted up the pressure for Columbia University President Minouche Shafik to step down on Wednesday as pro-Palestinian campus protests continued at the school’s New York campus and spread to colleges across the country. At the University of Texas at Austin, state troopers in riot gear, including some on horseback, began breaking up a group of protesters shortly after a demonstration began on Wednesday. The Palestine Solidarity Committee in Austin organized a walkout and occupation on the school’s south lawn. According to an Instagram post announcing the event, students were encouraged to bring “blankets, food and water, face masks, and lots of energy.” Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, meanwhile, visited Columbia University’s campus to call for Shafik’s resignation during a tense press conference on Wednesday afternoon where the crowd repeatedly interrupted the speaker and at times loudly booed him and other GOP lawmakers who were with him as they stood at the mics. 10 people arrested after University of Texas police and troopers respond pro-Palestine protests

By Luke Jones Wednesday, April 24, 2024 9:02PM Pro-Palestine protests and multiple arrests were reported at the University of Texas in Austin on Wednesday. AUSTIN, Texas — State troopers and University of Texas law enforcement are responding to pro-Palestine protests at the Austin campus Wednesday afternoon. According to a call by ABC News, a junior at the university who did not participate in the protest said he witnessed multiple arrests. “Their hands looked like they were in restraints,” he told ABC News, adding that they were perhaps “zip ties.” UT Austin confirmed that 10 people have been arrested. The student described protestors flanking both sides of mounted police and state troopers clad in riot gear. In a separate call with ABC News, the Austin Police Department said its role is only in assisting the main agency responding to the campus events, the UT Police Department; they are not booking individuals. Austin PD noted that the Texas Department of Public Safety is also assisting UTPD. The school’s paper, The Daily Texan, reported roughly 50 state troopers were seen in riot gear and issued a two-minute warning

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators, police clash during protest at USC

Wednesday, April 24, 2024 8:59PM Protests have broken out at colleges and universities across the country in connection with the war in Gaza. LOS ANGELES — A rally by pro-Palestinian students at USC became chaotic after campus police confronted protesters who tried to set up an encampment at the school’s Alumni Park, according to Los Angeles ABC station KABC. The university’s commencement ceremony is scheduled to occur in Alumni Park on May 10. Last week, USC canceled the valedictorian’s speech out of safety concerns considering her pro-Palestinian views, sparking backlash. The student, Asna Tabassum, is a first-generation South Asian-American Muslim who majored in biomedical engineering and minored in resistance to genocide, according to a statement published through the Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. A rally by pro-Palestinian demonstrators turned chaotic at USC’s Alumni Park, as police confronted protesters who attempted to set up an encampment on campus. Dozens of students and others have issued a list of demands, including the university’s divestment, similar to demands from students on other campuses, according to sister station KABC. Blake Snell’s rocky start with SF Giants continues, landing on injured list

SAN FRANCISCO — Blake Snell made a brief appearance in the Giants’ clubhouse Wednesday morning. He stopped by his locker, checked his phone and dashed out the door. Blink, and you’d miss him. The left-hander was scheduled to make his fourth start of the season in the Giants’ series finale against the Mets, but he was scratched before first pitch and placed on the injured list with a strained adductor muscle in his left groin, which manager Bob Melvin deemed moderate. Landen Roupp was recalled a day after being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento — he didn’t make it further than the hotel across the street from Oracle Park — and was expected to take down bulk innings behind Ryan Walker in the Giants’ first bullpen game of the year. Landing on the injured list, Snell added another lump to his rocky start in San Francisco. Waiting until March 19 to sign a two-year, $62 million free-agent contract, Snell didn’t make his first start until the fourth series of the season while occupying an active roster spot, and he hasn’t been an asset since taking the

Airbnb rentals could be harder to come by in Hawaii. Here’s why and when that might happen

Grace Toohey | (TNS) Los Angeles Times Hawaii lawmakers are hoping that phasing out short-term rentals could help ease its worsening housing crisis, where locals face the highest housing costs in the nation and one of the worst rates of homelessness. Two bills that would allow for new regulation of “transient accommodations” have moved readily through the state legislature this spring, and if passed, could provide new avenues to limit the short-term home rental industry, which has exploded in recent years across the state’s four populated islands. But the issue has been a challenging one for officials in cities and states across the U.S. — including Los Angeles, New York, Nashville and Bozeman, Mont. — who have looked for ways to rein in the ballooning popularity of Airbnb and other online home rental platforms without eliminating the economic benefits that such properties draw. In Hawaii, last summer’s Maui wildfires have uniquely forced attention on the housing crisis — which was reaching a critical juncture even before the fires displaced thousands. Proponents of the short-term rental phase-outs hope this new sense of urgency could help push these bills into law in the coming weeks.

David Quinn fired as Sharks’ head coach after two seasons

SAN JOSE — Following one of the worst seasons in franchise history, David Quinn on Wednesday was fired as coach of the San Jose Sharks. “After going through our end-of-the-season process of internal meetings and evaluating where our team is at and where we want our group to go, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at the head coach position,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said in a statement. “David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons. He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation.” The status of the Sharks’ assistant coaches, Scott Gordon, Brian Wiseman, Ryan Warsofsky and goaltending coach Thomas Speer, was not immediately clear. Quinn, who had one year left on his contract, posted a 41-98-25 record in two seasons. The Sharks’ 19-54-9 record this season was the worst in the NHL. Grier also announced that Ray Tufts, the Sharks’ longtime head athletic trainer, will not return to

49ers suddenly face more inflation in Aiyuk negotiations. How will it affect the draft?

The price keeps going up for Brandon Aiyuk. And they have the Detroit Lions, last year’s NFC Championship Game foe, to thank for it. While the Lions are still heartbroken over blowing a 17-point halftime lead and losing 34-31 to the 49ers with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, they can take at least a little solace in making it just that more difficult for their new rival to reel in their own star wide receiver. According to several outlets, Amon-Ra St. Brown received a four-year, $120 million extension from Detroit Wednesday with $77 million guaranteed, a number the 49ers will have to meet or exceed to keep Aiyuk. Assuming the 49ers have a max offer in mind for Aiyuk and it’s not in the ballpark of St. Brown’s haul, it could make a trade more likely Thursday night when the NFL Draft begins in . . . drumroll please . . . Detroit. That makes St. Brown the highest-paid receiver in the NFL, or at least in the realm of Miami’s Tyreek Hill ($30 million APY), the Raiders’ Davante Adams ($28
