Woman, 78, In Grave Condition After Being Pulled From Burning Home In Woodland Hills

WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA) — A woman is in grave condition Friday after firefighters pulled her from her burning Woodland Hills home. Firefighters were sent to the 2300 block of Burbank Boulevard just before 2 p.m. Thursday to find a one-story home engulfed in heavy smoke and heavy flames shooting through the roof. Two family members in the front yard told firefighters a woman was trapped inside, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The 78-year-old woman was found “lifeless” in a front room and, after she was pulled out of the home, paramedics were able to bring back a pulse, Humphrey said. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was in grave condition Thursday night. A hard-wired smoke alarm was found in the charred home, but Humphrey said it was not immediately clear if it was functional at the time of the fire. The 59-year-old home was not equipped with any fire sprinklers, and a window near where the woman had been found had been secured with wooden dowels and metal screws, which prevented them from being opened as an emergency exit, Humphrey…

Explosion at Manufacturing Plant Shakes Northwest Houston

An explosion at a northwest Houston business shook part of the city early Friday, sending at least one person to a hospital, damaging nearby homes and sending firefighters scrambling to put out a resulting fire. The blast — which occurred at Watson Grinding and Manufacturing, according to CNN affiliate KTRK — happened around 4:15 a.m. local time (5:15 a.m. ET) in the 4500 block of Gessner Road, about an 18-mile drive northwest of downtown, authorities said. Video posted to Twitter from a camera that was mounted to a home window appears to show the blast in the distance, followed by a rising fireball. Residents in the area have reported damage to their homes, including broken windows and doors, KTRK reported. One resident told CNN affiliate KTRK that “the whole ceiling fell in” at her home. “I thought maybe the house had gotten hit by lightning. And then I realized there was no storm,” the resident told KTRK. “No one can figure out what happened.” At least one person was taken to a hospital as a result of the explosion, the city fire department said. More than an hour after the…

Impeachment Trial: Adam Schiff Urges Republicans to Turn on President Trump in Emotional Speech

Senators are soon going to start seeing Adam Schiff in their sleep. The lead House impeachment manager is relentlessly pressuring the handful of Republican jurors who are considering a vote to call witness and delay the acquittal that President Donald Trump craves from his impeachment trial. Heading into the final day of his effort to build a devastating case, the indefatigable California Democrat is deploying every trick in the prosecutor’s arsenal as he weaves a narrative of an unchained presidency hour after grueling hour. Schiff became emotional late on Thursday as he pleaded with Republican senators to turn against their President, arguing that America would be “lost” if the truth of Trump’s conduct in Ukraine did not emerge. “You know you can’t trust this President to do what’s right for this country. You can trust he will do what’s right for Donald Trump. He will do it now. He’s done it before. He’ll do it for the next several months. He’ll do it in the election if he’s allowed to,” Schiff said. After Friday, Schiff will cede the stage to Trump’s lawyers, who plan to argue that the President did nothing…

Brother of Man Who Died in Corona Plane Crash Speaks Out, Identifies 4 Victims

A family member identified the four people that were killed when a plane crashed and caught fire after taking off from Corona Municipal Airport on Wednesday. Although authorities did not immediately identify the victims, Eddie Rodriguez of La Mirada told KTLA on Thursday that he lost his brother Danny, sister-in-law Teresa and friend Paula Mitchell in the crash. The plane’s owner, 85-year-old Joseph Zingali, was also on board and may have been at the controls although it is still unclear, Rodriguez said. Danny served 27 years with the Los Angeles Police Department as a training officer, his brother said. He was an experienced pilot, comfortable in both fixed-wing aircraft and his own helicopter, according to Rodriquez. “Well Danny himself…he was just a good guy,” Rodriguez said. “And he took care of me along with my wife when I had surgery a while back.” Danny’s wife, Teresa, who also died in the crash, worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years, according to Rodriguez. “Marvelous woman… [she] was kind to people, even strangers,” he said. Rodriguez said he was supposed to be the fourth person…

Five Exposed to Chemical Leak at Water Treatment Plant in Yorba Linda

Share this article:A chemical leak at a Yorba Linda water treatment plant that exposed five employees to hydrogen sulfide was contained Friday morning. Firefighters and a hazmat team responded to the plant in the 3900 block of Valley View Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, and discovered the employees were exposed to a chemical used in the water treatment process, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. Each of the five patients declined to be taken to a hospital, the OCFA said. A hazmat team entered the plant and confirmed a “very small quantity of the chemical that leaked is contained and no longer leaking,” the OCFA tweeted about 11 p.m. “Incident isolated to the water treatment plant only.” According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, hydrogen sulfide gas causes a wide range of health effects. Workers are primarily exposed to hydrogen sulfide by breathing it. The effects depend on how much hydrogen sulfide is breathed in and for how long. Exposure to very high concentrations can quickly lead to death. Five Exposed to Chemical Leak at Water Treatment Plant in Yorba Linda was last…

L.A. Man Who Suffered Burns From Crash Says He’s Oldest Person and 1st African American to Receive Facial Transplant

A Los Angeles man who suffered extensive burns in a crash told KTLA on Thursday that he successfully underwent a facial transplant procedure that made him the oldest person and the first African American to get a face transplant. Robert Chelsea, 68, said he is recovering from a successful and extensive 16-hour surgery he underwent in a Boston hospital in July. “After enduring more than 30 surgeries, three years of tests, physical and psychological evaluations, and a longer than usual wait for a donor, Chelsea underwent a 16-hour full face transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital this past July,” according to a GoFundMe page created to help him raise funds for the procedures. He is still adjusting to the sight of another man’s face when he looks into the mirror, he said, and feels like he’s wearing a mask. “On the inside, I’m me. But outside, I’m trying to get used to this new person,” Chelsea said. “I recognize this face. I accept this face. I appreciate this face.” Chelsea is still healing and struggling with functionality. Doctors have told him that it may take…

Video Shows Struggle Outside Lake Balboa School Campus Where 2 Suffered Stab Wounds; 1 in Custody

Two people were hospitalized with stab wounds, and one of them was in custody, after a brawl outside a middle school in Lake Balboa Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The incident was reported shortly after 3:10 p.m. in the 17100 block of Vanowen Street, said Officer Tony Im with the Los Angeles Police Department. A fight broke out in front of Mulholland Middle School after classes were done for the day, officials said. Cellphone video shows a person holding a sharp object and yelling at a crowd of students, with the campus visible in the background. Then, a struggle broke out between several young people. Mark Guerra, who witnessed the fight, said “one kid had two scissors in his hands” and used them to cut another minor. L.A. school police said they received conflicting reports from multiple students, but ultimately determined that a boy seen with a sharp object was the aggressor. The armed boy — who’s not a student at Mulholland or any L.A. Unified school — was hospitalized with injuries to his head and lacerations. Another person showed up at the hospital with lacerations, said…

Virus Considered a Crisis in China But Not Yet a Global Emergency: UN Agency

A viral illness in China that has sickened hundreds of people and prompted Chinese authorities to effectively shut down at least three cities is not yet a global health emergency, the World Health Organization said Thursday. The U.N. health agency issued its evaluation after Chinese authorities moved to lock down three cities indefinitely earlier in the day and canceled major public celebrations and gatherings in Beijing during the Lunar New Year holiday period to try to contain the evolving outbreak. During a news conference in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that while the epidemic was clearly a crisis in China, “it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one.” The steps taken by China to shut down cities with more than 18 million people are unprecedented in public health, as countries typically shy away from such extreme measures. Tedros said that while WHO’s role is to provide science-based recommendations, “at the end of the day, a sovereign country has the autonomy to do what it thinks is right.” However, he added that WHO hoped the actions taken by…

9-Year-Old Girl Hit by Stray Bullet After Car-to-Car Shooting Near Oxnard School

A 9-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet after a car-to-car shooting near an Oxnard elementary school Thursday, police said. The shooting was reported about 11 a.m. near Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, located at 3300 Via Marina Ave. Fourth and fifth grade students were at recess when the shooting broke out behind the school, Oxnard police said. The girl was struck in a lower extremity while on the playground and then taken into a nearby classroom. She was subsequently taken to a hospital, where she was in stable condition Thursday night, officers said. Police had earlier described the victim as being 10 years old. The child’s parents were notified about the incident by the Oxnard School District. No other injuries were reported in the shooting. “All other students have been accounted for and are safe,” police said in a tweet. Investigators described the car-to-car shooting as an isolated incident, but no arrests have been made. Witnesses told authorities they saw two vehicles driving erratically, with one that appeared to be following the other. Gunfire erupted from one of the cars before both fled the…
