Column: Trump has big plans for California if he wins a second term. Fasten your seatbelts

WASHINGTON —  Donald Trump is running against California — again. In his campaign to win a second term, the former president frequently excoriates the state as a terrifying dystopia — the inevitable product, he claims, of Democratic policies. “The place is failing,” he told a conservative conference last month. “It has become a symbol of our nation’s decline,” he told California Republicans last year. “They don’t have water,” he said. “Rich people in Beverly Hills … [are] only allowed a small amount of water when they take a shower. That’s why rich people from Beverly Hills, generally speaking, don’t smell so good.” He accused Gov. Gavin Newsom of telling undocumented migrants, “If you come up, we’re going to give you pension funds…. We’ll give you a mansion.” (Newsom has never promised migrants pension funds or mansions.) Under its current policies, Trump charged, the state can “take children away from their parents and sterilize them.” (California does not seize children to sterilize them.) “He’s destroyed California,” Trump said of the governor, whom he recently gave a new and strikingly unattractive nickname: “Gavin New-Scum.” California-bashing has become a

I mean, even though this tournament looked like, the scores, maybe I had everything under control, it wasn’t from the beginning to the end so easy. So I’m happy I could improve during the tournament. I felt really good on the last two matches, big amount of confidence. “I would say at the beginning of the tournament I felt like I didn’t have much luck with the draw. I played opponents that sometimes I struggled with. I lost against Linda (Noskova) in Australia this year. “Then I was pretty stressed actually before facing Caroline Wozniacki (in the quarterfinals), because

Putin hails all-but-final election victory but critics made voices heard

World Updated on: March 18, 2024 / 5:16 AM EDT / CBS/AP President Vladimir Putin basked in an election victory that was never in doubt as officials said Monday that he’d won his fifth term with a record number of votes, underlining the Russian leader’s total control of the country’s political system. After facing only token challengers and harshly suppressing opposition voices, Putin extended his nearly quarter-century rule for six more years . Russia’s Central Election Commission said that with nearly 100% of all precincts counted, Putin got 87.29% of the vote. Commission chief Ella Pamfilova said nearly 76 million voters cast their ballots for Putin, his highest vote tally ever.   Putin, 71, hailed the overwhelming results as an indication of “trust” and “hope” in him – while critics saw them as another reflection of the preordained nature of the election. “Of course, we have lots of tasks ahead. But I want to make it clear for everyone: When we were consolidated, no one has ever managed to frighten us, to suppress our will and our self-conscience. They failed in the past and they

Tyronn Lue questions Clippers’ struggles after bad loss to Hawks: ‘Maybe it’s me’

Bad. Bad. Bad. There really was no other way to describe the unsightly basketball the Clippers played Sunday night during a disheartening 110-93 loss to an underwhelming Atlanta Hawks team at Crypto.com Arena. The Clippers, who at one point trailed Atlanta by 29 points in the fourth quarter, have lost four of their last five games. “We got to do the necessary things to get out of this rut that we’re in,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “And so it starts with playing hard first — every single possession. It starts with executing on both sides of the basketball defensively … things we talk about every single day we show on film. We just got to execute them, not for 20 minutes, not for 28, for 48 minutes.” They were bad on defense, looking indifferent about doing anything to stop the Hawks from shooting 48.8% from the field, 50% from three-point range. They were bad on offense, playing too much one-on-one and not sharing the ball in shooting 37.8% from the field, 30.6% from three-point range and having just 17 assists. They were bad with

Dre recalls blacking out while at the medical facility. “I’m in and out of consciousness, and I ended up in the ICU,” he said to Corden. “I was there

Clippers were simply bad in blowout loss to Atlanta Hawks

Bad. Bad. Bad. There really was no other way to describe the unsightly basketball the Clippers played Sunday night during a disheartening 110-93 loss to an underwhelming Atlanta Hawks team at Crypto.com Arena. That the Clippers got down by 29 points in the fourth quarter was bad because of the lack of effort they displayed. They were bad on defense, looking indifferent about doing anything to stop the Hawks from shooting 48.8% from the field, 50% from three-point range. They were bad on offense, playing too much one-on-one and not sharing the ball in shooting 37.8% from the field, 30.6% from three-point range and having just 17 assists. They were bad with the basketball, their carelessness creating 16 turnovers. James Harden, who had missed the last two games with a strained left shoulder, was bad, missing his first seven shots before finishing three for 10 for nine points. Bones Hyland was bad, turning the ball over five times, missing all four of his shots and not scoring in 11 minutes. Kawhi Leonard (28 points) and Paul George (26) had decent games, but it wasn’t enough

UCLA lands highest women’s NCAA tourney seed in its history, but falls short of No. 1

Living up to her name this time of year has been agonizing for Cori Close. Her UCLA women’s basketball teams have made five appearances in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. They’ve gone to one Elite Eight, matching the furthest run of any team in school history other than the 1978 bunch that won the AIAW championship. All this getting within reach of the Final Four only to fall short has left the Bruins waiting for that big breakthrough under the coach who is nearing the end of her 13th season. Their next push starts Saturday at Pauley Pavilion, where the second-seeded Bruins (25-6) will face 15th-seeded Cal Baptist (28-3) in a first-round game in the Albany 2 Region at 6:30 p.m. PDT (ESPN2). This represents the highest seeding in school history for UCLA but was not the top seed the team coveted. Close, once again. “We had plenty of opportunities to earn a No. 1 seed and we didn’t,” said Close, whose team finished tied with USC for second in the Pac-12 standings before losing to the Trojans in a conference tournament semifinal
