Wilmington Residents Protest Proposed Homeless Shelter

WILMINGTON (CBSLA) – Wilmington residents protested a proposed homeless shelter on Saturday. People who live near this proposed site in the 1300 block of North Avalon Boulevard say that they support housing for the homeless but they do not support the current proposed location. Residents are demanding that Councilman Joe Buscaino and Mayor Garcetti find an alternate location that will not impact the quality of homes, businesses, schools and parks. “We have no idea why they picked this city when there are several facilities in Wilmington already existing and there’s other properties that we think would be better suited for what they’re trying to do,” said Alicia Baltazar. The rally was organized by the Wilmington Coalition, a grassroots group of residents and community leaders.

Family pleads for information in Leimert Park hit-and-run that killed moped rider

As the search continues for the driver who hit and killed a 55-year-old moped rider in Leimert Park earlier this month, the family on Saturday is pleading for help finding the suspect. Reade Torrance Childres was on a moped in the area along Crenshaw Boulevard near Westmont Avenue around 2:35 p.m. on April 1 when a person driving a black Ford Flex struck the back of his moped and fled the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The impact of the collision, which was captured on surveillance video, caused Childres to be ejected from the moped and hit the roadway. The driver of the SUV is seen driving away without stopping to identify themselves, which is required by law, authorities said. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported Childres to a hospital, where he died two days later, according to police.  “He loved to care for others. He was always doing something extra,” said the victim’s cousin, Sheila Kearns. “We need closure. … We’re just heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief.” Investigators canvassed the area of the crash site and have since released the surveillance video of…

Pomona Police Recover Missing Teen, Alleged Victim of Human Trafficking

POMONA (CBSLA) – A 17-year-old girl is in protective custody after revealing to Pomona Police officers that she was a victim of human trafficking. The unidentified minor was approached by officers patrolling the East Holt Corridor in Pomona on Friday after they observed her loitering in the area. She told the officers that she was listed as a missing person and was a victim of human trafficking. According to Corporal Angela Torres, officers took notice of the girl loitering and thought that she did not appear as though she belonged in the area. “When the officers contacted her, they learned she was only 17 years old and listed as a missing person,” Torres said. “The juvenile began crying when she revealed this information and officers assured her she was safe.” The teen told police she had been picked up from a friend’s home in another county about a week earlier and taken back and forth between Los Angeles and Pomona, where “she was forced to engage in acts of prostitution with strangers for money. The exploiter collected all of the juvenile’s earnings and forced her…

New details emerge about Arizona facility planned to hold 500 migrants

A tent-like facility that the federal government plans to set up in Tucson to temporarily house migrants will be located near the city’s airport and be completed in about a month, a Border Patrol official has told the City Council. John Modlin, interim head of the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector said Friday in an email that the facility will be designed to hold 500 people but “with COVID considerations and with restrictions from litigation, our capacity will likely be approximately 150-200,” the Arizona Daily Star reported. The “demographics of the in-custody population will of course also impact our capacity,” Modlin said. Councilman Steve Kosachik said the planned facility likely will hold unaccompanied minors encountered by the Border Patrol. Local officials had said in March that the federal government was considering Tucson as a site for a tent-like facility to house unaccompanied migrant children and families after the Border Patrol gives them court dates and releases them into the U.S. U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s office said Friday that the Arizona Democrat was told by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that it would use hotels in cities in border…

Orange County Sees Rise in COVID-19 Hospitalizations

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – Officials in Orange County reported 422 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is a significant jump from recent days. There was also an increase in residents hospitalized for the virus and five additional deaths. The spike in new cases is at least partially because of backlogged positive reports from a private testing lab, but hospitalizations went from 114 on Friday to a 125 today. Still officials remain optimistic because the county has been on a flat case rate for about seven days, according to Orange County CEO Frank Kim, and the hardest hit communities continue to improve. $29.5 million awarded to Las Vegas family in allergic reaction case

A jury has awarded $29.5 million to the family of a woman who was left brain damaged after being treated for a severe allergic reaction by an ambulance service in Las Vegas in 2013. Then-27-year-old Chantel Giacalone went into anaphylactic shock after biting into a pretzel infused with peanut butter while in Las Vegas for a convention, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Friday. Giacalone’s lawyer, Christian Morris, said she lost oxygen to her brain for a period of minutes after seeking treatment from MedicWest Ambulance, which was running the medic station that day. Morris argued in a civil lawsuit that MedicWest Ambulance negligently treated her allergic reaction. He argued that neither of the two medics on-site that day had IV epinephrine, an adrenaline treatment for severe allergic reactions that is required by the Southern Nevada Health District. According to testimony during a three-week trial, the requirement was established by a task force the company sits on. Morris said the medics instead deployed intramuscular epinephrine, but IVs are required for full anaphylaxis. He argued the cost of the drug was only $2.42. The lawsuit was seeking more than…

Orange County to test digital COVID vaccine passports

Orange County will launch a pilot program to test out digital COVID-19 vaccine passports, health officials announced this week. “The Digital Passport enables individuals to participate safety and with peace of mind in activities that involve interactions with other people, including travel, attractions, conferences/meetings, concerts, sports, school and more,” Orange County Health Care Agency officials said on Twitter. Few details were available on how the digital passport would work to verify COVID-19 immunization status. County health officer, Dr. Clayton Chau, told the O.C. Register that Orange County could easily update its vaccine appointment scheduling website, Othena, so that people who used it to get vaccinated could show anyone proof of their vaccination. Othena is being used for vaccine appointments at the county’s mass inoculation sites, including Disneyland, the O.C. Fairgrounds and Soka University. So far, 598,838 people are fully vaccinated in Orange County and another 589,230 people have only received one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, according to county data.
