An auction of automobiles, precious metals, foreign currency, appliances and other items from estates placed under the management of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department will be held online next week. Hesperia-based Bid Fast & Last is coordinating with the sheriff’s Office of the Public Administrator to provide the live internet-based engagement, scheduled for Wednesday morning. Officials said interested bidders will be permitted, by appointment only, to view items on the auction block in-person at the sheriff’s Perris warehouse, 800 S. Redlands Ave., where they’re stored. The preview is slated ahead of the auction. A motorcyclist was killed Friday and his passenger critically injured in a collision involving a Metro Orange Line bus in the Van Nuys area. The crash was reported about 11 a.m. Friday on Hazeltine Avenue near Bessemer Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Information was not immediately available on the identity of the fatally injured man. According to the LAPD, a 10-year-old girl riding on the back of the motorcycle was critically injured and taken to a hospital. The circumstances of the crash were under investigation.

After years of drought and water restrictions, Californians have had some respite over the last two years. In 2023, the state found itself replenished by a record number of storms fed by atmospheric rivers, which brought most places out of drought and transformed a withered landscape into a verdant one. This year, winter storms have again brought much-needed precipitation to California. As of Friday, only 4.5% of the state was abnormally dry, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System. Those small regions were not dry enough to qualify as being in drought. They were located on the edges of the state, near the Arizona, Nevada and Oregon borders. A multi-agency investigation led to the seizure of more than 4,000 pounds of methamphetamine this week in West Covina and unincorporated Riverside County, authorities said Friday. Teams from the Riverside Sheriff’s Special Investigations Bureau, Homeland Security Investigations and West Covina Police Department combined Wednesday while tracking the transportation and sales of methamphetamine, officials stated in a news release. Methamphetamine seized in West Covina and Riverside County is seen in an image provided by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office on March 15, 2024. “The cooperative effort led to the seizure of 4,038 pounds of methamphetamine,” the Riverside Sheriff’s Office said. Two conservative members of the Orange Unified School District have been recalled, the Los Angeles Times reports. School Board Trustees Rick Ledesma and Madison Miner “were warriors who took high-profile, aggressively conservative stands in front of cheering audiences of the like-minded,” the Times reported. The Los Angeles Fire Department knocked down a greater alarm structure fire in Studio City on Friday morning at a hillside home belonging to actor-model Cara Delevingne. “My heart is broken today … I cannot believe it. Life can change in a blink of an eye. It was a sweet reunion for the cafe’s patrons who have missed the Cuban institution since it suddenly shuttered in November. At Thursday’s soft-reopening event, new owners Danny Khorunzhiy, Ed Cornell and Rene Navarrette welcomed customers back to the almost 50-year-old establishment and served a limited menu that included breakfast sandwiches and coffee. “The outpouring from the community has been really cool, ” said Khorunzhiy. Café Tropical will officially reopen to the public on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular business hours moving forward will be Tuesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the owners said. Ukai, the Australian shepherd/border collie/Bouvier mix who stars opposite Mark Wahlberg in the new film “Arthur the King,” undertakes a performance that is more physically rigorous, if not dramatically suspenseful, than the one delivered by the French border collie who appeared in the Oscar-winning film “Anatomy of a Fall.” But dog movies — and dogs in movies — aren’t just having a moment. A Long Beach man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in his own home last month, and a woman also faces a charge for her alleged role in the slaying. Damion Videl Castro, 44, was arrested in Hollywood on Thursday and taken back to Long Beach to be booked in the city’s jail, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release. On Feb. 14, Castro allegedly shot 36-year-old Jamie Jones at their shared residence in the 2200 block of Chestnut Avenue. “Detectives believe Jones and Castro were roommates at the residence on Chestnut Avenue and involved in an argument, which escalated into a shooting,” police said. Castro was booked on several charges: murder, prohibited possession of a firearm, prohibited possession of ammunition, a parole violation and a fugitive warrant. A person is dead and another is hospitalized after a motorcycle and a bus collided in Valley Glen Friday morning. The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. near the intersection of Hazeltine Avenue and Bessemer Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. A motorcycle carrying two people and a bus crashed into each other, resulting in one death and one transport to a hospital, the Los Angeles Police Department said. That person’s condition is unknown. The age, gender and names of those involved have not been released. As a result, the Metro Orange Line at Hazeltine is closed “until further notice,” police said.
