House to vote on TikTok ban

Politics By Caitlin Yilek Edited By Ellen Uchimiya Updated on: March 13, 2024 / 7:03 AM EDT / CBS News Officials brief House members on TikTok Officials brief House members on TikTok, ByteDance ahead of bill vote 04:07 Washington — Legislation that could ban TikTok in the U.S. if Beijing-based ByteDance doesn’t sell its stake in the social media platform is moving quickly in the House, with lawmakers expected to hold a vote Wednesday morning.   House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, was confident the bill would pass.  TikTok has repeatedly been targeted by lawmakers seeking to restrict the app over concerns that the Chinese government could force ByteDance to hand over the data of its 170 million American users. Lawmakers say the concern is warranted because Chinese national security laws require organizations to cooperate with intelligence gathering. TikTok has long denied it could be used by the Chinese government to spy on Americans.  The House fast-tracked the bill, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, skipping the Rules Committee and bringing it up under a procedure that requires

Man Convicted of Murdering His Four Kids, Their Grandma

A Lancaster man was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of his four young children and their grandmother as she was babysitting them. Jurors found Germarcus Lamar David, now 32, guilty of five counts of first-degree murder for the Nov. 28, 2021, killings of his 11-year-old daughter, Namiyah, and his three sons, Germarcus Jr., 7, Kayden, 2, and Noah, 1, along with his mother-in-law, Ericka England, 51, who was babysitting the children while their mother was having dinner with friends. The Lancaster jury — which was handed the case late last Thursday afternoon — also found true the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with finding David guilty of three counts of assault on a child causing death involving his three youngest children. Deputy District Attorney Vanessa Zuniga had urged jurors to convict David of the most serious charges of first-degree murder, while defense attorney Anna Brief called on the panel to find the lesser option of second-degree murder for a man whom she said did the “unimaginable.” In her closing argument last week, the prosecutor told jurors that “each of

Orange County leads Southern California in cancer rates among 18 to 49-year-olds: report

Despite the median age of a cancer diagnosis being 66 years old, with the risk of disease increasing as people age, new data reveals a troubling trend of people under 50 years old developing certain cancers. Cancer survivor Juliette Landgrave was 38 years old when she found a lump in her breast and her life was turned upside down.   “At the beginning of my journey, people would tell me I was too young to have cancer,” she said. Now, a concerning new report from City of Hope’s Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center released Tuesday found that cancer rates among people aged 18-49 are surging at higher rates than previous generations, led in part by a rise in colorectal and breast cancers. A person seen undergoing a medical procedure in this undated file photo (KTLA) “If we see the trend that we’re seeing right now of people under 50 being diagnosed with colon cancer, by 2030 it will be a leading cause of death in young adults in the U.S.,” said Dr. Edward Kim, Physician in Chief at City of Hope Orange County.

Santa Barbara City Council votes on new payment structure for parklets off State Street

The parklet outside the Blue Owl restaurant on Canon Perdido Street in Santa Barbara was installed for free during the pandemic. Owner Nadia Ajlouni says it’s been essential to expanding her restaurant business. “It increased our revenue as a business, which allowed us to invest more in the restaurant, and hire more people because we had more demand,” Ajlouni said. Ajlouni says restaurants with parklets are frustrated with changing rules and additional costs imposed by the city. The pre-application fee for all parklets is $514, the parklet license application is $2,500, and once approved, there’s a $24 per square foot fee each year. “A lot of it is frontloading the cost without us knowing if we can keep the parklet or for how long,” Ajlouni said. The average restaurant operates at roughly a 5% profit margin, according to stats from the National Restaurant Association, which means large cost increases can be unsustainable, especially for smaller businesses. “Whether Im 900 square feet or 10,000 square feet, the cost is the same, which just feels a little rough and its not going to be sustainable for any

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled Tuesday honoring Lenny Kravitz for being credited with reimagining rock ‘n’ roll for the 1990s and beyond and receiving nine Grammy nominations, winning four times. “I used to walk these very streets because the action and the grit that I was missing in New York was right here in Hollywood,” Kravitz told the crowd gathered for the ceremony in front of the Capitol Records Tower. “As a teenager, I spent a lot of time walking up and down Hollywood Boulevard, seeing the names of all my idols. “I never dreamed about having a star. I was usually just looking for a place to crash. But I did dream about making the music I wanted and doing my own thing. Kawhi Leonard leaves Clippers’ loss early because of back spasms

It was one thing for the Clippers to lose forward Kawhi Leonard to back spasms that forced him to leave Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday night, but what upset Coach Ty Lue the most was how his team wasn’t “being mentally tough” after losing their All-Star and how his group succumbed to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the aftermath. Lue essentially called his team out after the Clippers lost, 118-110. The Clippers built a 22-point lead in the second quarter after Leonard left the game having played 12 minutes in the first quarter. But the Clippers eventually went down by 22 points in the second half, a stunning turn of events considering how important this game was for both teams in the Western Conference standings. Lue said Leonard, who had six points, two rebounds and two assists before departing, had been dealing with back issues for a while but he still wanted to play. “Yeah, he’s been dealing with it for a couple of days. Back spasms and…Wasn’t sure if he was going to go this morning,” Lue said. “But he came to shoot-around, got some treatment

Kawhi Leonard leaves Clippers game early because of back spasms

Clippers All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard left Crypto.com Arena because of back spasms, the team announced at halftime of their 118-100 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. Leonard was uncomfortable running and sitting down, so he left the building, unable to play because of the pain after playing in all 12 minutes of the first quarter in a game the Clippers once led by 22 points. Thoracic spasm, as the team called it, is defined as inflammation and can be caused by several things, including a sudden sprain or strain. Leonard had sat out Sunday’s game because of left groin soreness, only the sixth game he had sat out this season. He leads the Clippers in scoring (24.0 points) and is averaging 6.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Even with Leonard gone, the Clippers built a 57-35 lead in the second quarter. But a 20-2 run late in the second quarter got the Timberwolves back into the game, putting the Clippers on their heels and in a tense and tough game. They scored just 15 points in the third quarter and wound up down 84-78

On March 1, the victim, identified only as a 17-year-old girl, was picked up by Dourousseau at around 8 p.m. The suspect drove the girl to his home where he allegedly asked her for sex, authorities said. When the girl refused, Dourousseau allegedly held the girl captive and refused to let her leave his home for six days. During that time, the girl was provided with very little food or water while the suspect forced her to consume large amounts of alcohol, deputies said. The suspect also “forced the girl to have sex with him in exchange for her freedom,” authorities said. He took the girl with him when driving to work and left her locked inside his car during the day. 6-year-old girl attacked by homeless man in Santa Monica On March 7, the girl was able to escape from the vehicle and ran into a nearby business located

Speed a factor in Tesla Cybertruck crash into Beverly Hills Hotel: police

Authorities announced Tuesday that “unsafe speed” was a factor in a single-vehicle accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck that crashed into the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel sign earlier this month.   The March 3 crash happened just before midnight at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and North Beverly Drive.   The nearly 7,000-pound stainless steel vehicle hopped the curb and came to a stop with its two front wheels on top of a concrete landscaping wall. The truck sustained major damage to its front end, as well as damaging the poles that hold the hotel’s sign.    Officers from the Beverly Hills Police Department and medical personnel with the fire department responded to the scene.   Three passengers inside the Cybertruck were examined for injuries, though no one was taken to the hospital for further treatment.   A Tesla Cybetruck seen after a crash into the Iconic Beverly Hills Hotel sign on Mar. 3, 2024. Tenant rights lawyer Ysabel Jurado pulls ahead of Councilmember Kevin de León in L.A. election

Los Angeles City Council candidate Ysabel Jurado didn’t have any big-money backers spending lavishly on her behalf. The Highland Park resident didn’t mail out glossy campaign mailers either, opting instead for an estimated 3,000 postcards, which were less expensive and personally handwritten. What Jurado, a tenant rights attorney, did have was a supercharged canvassing operation. According to her campaign, she sent 20 paid staffers and about 250 volunteers to 85,000 doors across the 14th District, which stretches from Boyle Heights and downtown north to Eagle Rock and El Sereno. That strategy is paying dividends. On Tuesday, she pulled ahead of Councilmember Kevin de León, who had been leading in the eight-way race to represent his Eastside district, according to the latest election results. Now in first place and likely headed to a runoff, Jurado is yet another example of the electoral might being wielded by the city’s political left. Jurado, in an interview, said she’s not certain who her opponent will be in the Nov. 5 runoff election, since votes are still being counted. She portrayed her campaign as a lean operation, one focused on
