Man dies after Fullerton police shoot him multiple times with ‘less-lethal’ beanbag rounds

A man died this week after Fullerton police shot him multiple times with “less-lethal” beanbag rounds after confronting him outside a McDonald’s restaurant where he had been acting erratically, police said. The manager at the fast food restaurant called police early Wednesday to report two men standing outside the business who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, the Fullerton Police Department said in a news release. Officers arrived at about 3 a.m. at the restaurant in the 1300 block of South Brookhurst Road, where they found the two men standing outside near the front doors, police said. Management called police because restaurant employees were starting to arrive for work. One of the men was not wearing a shirt when police arrived and ignored them when they tried to get his attention, police said. The man then began to swing a belt at officers as they approached him, and more police were called to the scene. Officers tried to subdue the man with a Taser stun gun, but it failed to work. He continued to act erratically, according to police, and that’s when officers

Stormy Daniels alleges in new documentary that Donald Trump cornered her the night they met

Stormy Daniels goes into new detail in a documentary about her alleged 2006 sexual encounter with former President Trump, saying she was cornered by him in his hotel room the night they met and that she blames herself for not stopping him. The adult filmmaker makes the revelation in “Stormy,” a nearly two-hour documentary premiering March 18 on Peacock. It was directed by Sarah Gibson and produced by Erin Lee Carr and features interviews with Seth Rogen, Jimmy Kimmel, Daniels’ family and friends, and several journalists, including New York’s Olivia Nuzzi and Denver Nicks, who began a relationship with Daniels while shooting some of the scenes in the film. “Stormy” details the moments before Daniels met Trump and all that has transpired since, including a $130,000 hush money payment, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, that prosecutors say Trump made to Daniels just before the presidential election in 2016. That payment eventually led to his indictment in New York last year for falsifying business records, with prosecutors saying it was part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme. Trump has denied the relationship and says he didn’t

Review: Though visually dazzling, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ shows a flabby franchise in need of punch

The “Kung Fu Panda” movies have always been reliable when it comes to animated franchises. A distinctive style, star-studded voice cast and the winning Jack Black voicing Po, the roly-poly, dumpling-appreciating Dragon Warrior, is usually a recipe for success, or at least it has been. “Kung Fu Panda 2” was even nominated for an animated feature Oscar in 2012. It’s been eight years since we last saw our old pal Po in 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and this new installment, “Kung Fu Panda 4,” is co-directed by journeyman animation director Mike Mitchell teamed with Stephanie Ma Stine, making her feature debut. The film coasts on elements that have worked before: Black’s vocal charms and the signature visuals, inspired by various Chinese arts, including painting, music and film. It’s still a fun, beautiful animated world to experience, but in this rushed and harried 94-minute package — over-stuffed with plot and characters — those virtues get short shrift. The film also falls prey to a few well-trod tropes, so what used to be fresh and singular now feels like every other animated sequel. There are cutesy

Tesla Cybertruck offroading on California beach ends with a glitch

One of Tesla’s futuristic Cybertrucks on display in Buena Park last year. (Richard Vogel / Associated Press) Tesla describes its Cybertruck as a durable and rugged vehicle that can go anywhere, but one Nevada man learned this week that’s not always the case after his truck became stuck on a state beach in Monterey County. The incident occurred on Monday at Marina State Beach when the owner of the Cybertruck drove over a curb and sidewalk and past a posted sign stating “no vehicles on beach or dunes,” according to Douglas Johnson, information officer with the California State Parks. “The Cybertruck soon got stuck,” he said. “With assistance from the Marina Fire Department the vehicle was able to get out by releasing air from the tires.” KSBW Action News 8 posted a video on its TikTok account. The video was taken by a woman at the beach and shows a state park officer talking to three men near the Cybertruck. In the video the woman and others laugh as the men push the truck out of the beach. Johnson said the driver was fined $280.

Concern grows over Big Bear bald eagle eggs that have not yet hatched

More than a week after “Pip Watch” began, concern is growing over three bald eagle eggs that have not yet hatched in Big Bear. The famous bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow have been guarding the eggs since they were laid in late January. “At this time in the hatching process, it can be very emotional. I know everyone is on the edge of their seats wanting answers,” an Instagram post from jackie.shadow_bbl, which is managed by Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), said Wednesday. “FOBBV still has not confirmed a PIP. All I can do is remind everyone that we are just observers of nature and nature can be beautiful and brutal and the outcome, whatever it may be, is out of our control,” the post went on to say. LAPD had more applicants in January than any other month in the last 2 years, Mayor Bass says

The Los Angeles Police Department received more job applications in January than in any other month over the last two years, Mayor Karen Bass announced Thursday. The 1,200 applications came amid a nationwide police shortage leading to staffing burnout in some departments, according to reports. “We are continuing our work to make Los Angeles’ neighborhoods safer as more and more applicants are expressing interest in serving our communities,” Bass said. “It’s good to see trends evolving as we continue to focus on recruiting and retaining officers to the department.” Dominic Choi sworn in as LAPD interim chief LAPD staffing has been a focus for Bass in her tenure as mayor, as in 2023 city council approved a new four-year contract with the police union in an effort to improve hiring and retention. The agreement increased the starting police salary by 13%. “We’ve been trying to hire,” LAPD Interim Chief Dominic Choi told KTLA on Thursday morning. “Retention goes down to employee wellness and morale. If officers are happy at work, they’re excited to go to work, they’re going to stay at work … As interim

Commentary: ‘It was not safe’: Why the U.S.-Canada game shouldn’t have been played

SAN DIEGO —  A light rain was falling when the U.S. and Canadian national teams headed to their locker rooms before Wednesday’s CONCACAF W Gold Cup semifinal at Snapdragon Stadium. When they returned to start the game 15 minutes later, the drizzle had become a deluge and the field was under water. Lots and lots of water. “It’s obvious that the game was unplayable,” Canadian coach Bev Priestman said. That was the consensus opinion of everybody not on the officiating crew headed by Mexican referee Katia García. She told the teams to get on with it and the result may have been the most memorable game that never should have been played. It was a soggy battle that saw the U.S. twice give away one-goal leads — the second on a penalty kick deep in stoppage time — in a 2-2 draw that was settled in a penalty-kick shootout the Americans won to advance to Sunday’s tournament final with Brazil. Porter Calls Primary Election for Senate Seat `Rigged’

While Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican former Dodger Steve Garvey prepare for a November runoff election after topping a crowded field of candidates looking to claim the U.S. Senate seat previously held by the late Dianne Feinstein, Katie Porter is catching flack Thursday for saying the system to select candidates is rigged. Porter, a member of Congress representing Irvine who finished third in the primary election, posted on social media Wednesday that donors supporting Schiff used their money to rig the election. “Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign and voted to shake up the status quo in Washington. Because of you, we had the establishment running scared — withstanding 3 to 1 in TV spending and an onslaught of billionaires spending millions to rig this election,” Porter said in a post after the race was called. According to still-unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary election, Schiff, D-Burbank, led the way among the more than two dozen candidates seeking the seat, earning 33.2% of the vote. Garvey was only about 30,000 votes behind, earning 32.4% of the tally. Porter, D-Irvine, was a distant third

‘The cavalry ain’t coming.’ Why the Lakers’ home loss to the Kings was a costly one

The Lakers had a big opportunity in front of them on Wednesday night, a chance to put some pressure on Sacramento in the Western Conference, an opening to get closer to the Kings as they jockey for position in the standings. Instead, the Lakers flopped. And they did it in an unbelievable fashion. They led the Kings by 19 points in the first quarter. They also trailed the Kings by 22 in the third, a stunning turn of events. As a result, the Lakers dropped to 10th in the West, 2½ games behind the seventh-seeded Kings. The Lakers are one game behind the eighth-seeded Dallas Mavericks and a half-game behind the ninth-seeded Golden State Warriors. The season is winding down and there’s not much time for the Lakers to make up ground. “The cavalry ain’t coming,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said after his team dropped a 130-120 game to the Kings at Crypto.com Arena. “We got 18 [games] left. We just gotta buckle down and try to do a better job.” The Lakers have lost all three games to the Kings, giving up an average
