Deputy who killed mother in front of child also body-slammed school janitor, lawsuit says

Eight months before fatally shooting a woman in front of her 9-year-old daughter, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Ty Shelton allegedly body-slammed a school janitor who was taking out the trash, according to a new lawsuit. Filed on behalf of the Palmdale School District, the March 29 suit targets both Shelton and the Sheriff’s Department in Los Angeles Superior Court, saying the lawman should have seen that custodian Eric Rios clearly wasn’t fleeing and didn’t look anything like the suspect Shelton was chasing. The deputy did not respond to a request for comment. In an emailed statement Friday, the department said it had not yet officially received the claim but that it takes all uses of force seriously. “The department conducted an internal investigation into this incident, which was reviewed by the North Patrol Division Commander,” the statement said. “It was determined to be objectively reasonable and within policy.” Meanwhile, Palmdale school Supt. Raul Maldonado said the district had not been aware of the lawsuit, and that it should have been filed on behalf of an insurance company, not on behalf of the district. The

Public advised to stay out of all Los Angeles County beaches due to poor water quality

The Los Angeles County Public Health Department is advising beachgoers to avoid all water contact until at least 8 a.m. Monday morning. The warning is for all beaches in the county. Officials say with the latest storm bringing more rain to Southern California, the ocean water quality has deteriorated due to high levels of bacteria. With multiple storms impacting the region in recent weeks, the added rainfall results in excessive bacteria and debris that could seep into the ocean water from city streets and mountain areas. The Department of Public Health adds that the danger of elevated bacteria levels is especially high around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers. The health department tests ocean water bacteria levels regularly and advisories will be lifted once the levels meet standards set by the state of California. For a map and the latest information on beach closures and warnings, check the L.A. County Department of Health’s website or call the county’s hotline at 1-800-525-5662. To report a beach emergency or issue, call the L.A. County Operator at 626-430-5360 or during after-hours at 213-974-1234.

Beverly Hills man stole over $18 million through cannabis-related scams

A Beverly Hills man pleaded guilty to scamming over $18 million from victims through cannabis-related cons. Mark Roy Anderson, 69, pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing around $18.4 million from investors through fake claims that his companies were involved in hemp farms, cannabis-infused retail products and a sham bottling business, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. At the time of the schemes, authorities said Anderson had multiple prior fraud convictions. One scheme was committed while he was in home confinement after being released from federal prison. The second scheme was committed as he was on supervised release for a fraud conviction. In the first scheme from June 2020 to April 2021, officials said Anderson “tricked investors into providing funding for his company, called Harvest Farm Group.” The company allegedly processed hemp that was grown on a farm into “medical-grade cannabidiol (CBD) isolate – a chemical found in marijuana – to be sold for a substantial profit.” Anderson falsely told victims he owned and operated the Kern County farm and that he had already completed profitable harvests. He claimed he was using his own machinery to “convert

Pasadena police consider body cameras that activate when officers draw handguns

The Pasadena Police Department is considering buying equipment that would automatically activate all nearby police body cameras when any officer draws a handgun from a holster. The equipment could provide a new level of oversight to the Police Department, which counts more than 230 sworn and armed police officers within its ranks. If the purchase is approved by city officials, it would make Pasadena one of a handful of California police departments that have deployed the new technology on the streets. The proposed $4.5-million purchase is expected to be considered by the Pasadena City Council during its April 29 meeting. Although body-worn cameras are common throughout the nation’s police departments, most of the equipment requires police officers to turn on the cameras to record crucial incidents. The circumstances under which officers must manually switch on their cameras are often dictated by department policy. The new equipment being considered by Pasadena police, however, would automatically activate all nearby cameras to record during specific circumstances. Sensors located in firearms and holsters would automatically switch on body-worn camera recorders when a firearm is removed from its holster. The

Southern California couple charged with murdering boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend

The Ventura County District Attorney has filed murder and kidnapping charges against an Oxnard couple accused of killing one of their former lovers. Authorities say 37-year-old Jorge Alberto Garfias and 33-year-old Margarita Jimenez are responsible for the death of Yanelly Vargas. Officials say Vargas was Garfias’ ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred just before midnight on March 17 at a bar in Oxnard. Vargas was allegedly tricked into coming outside of the establishment by Jimenez and Garfias. When the victim exited the bar, the couple allegedly assaulted Vargas and forced her into their vehicle. Vargas was able to exit the suspects’ vehicle after approximately 15 minutes. After she managed to escape, Jimenez followed the victim and shot her, authorities said. Jimenez and Garfias fled in their truck before Oxnard Police officers arrived on the scene. Emergency responders found Vargas suffering from a single gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. The entire incident was captured by a nearby surveillance camera, officials say. The couple was arrested on April 3. Jimenez and Garfias have both been charged with murder and

8 arrested, including 6 juveniles in L.A. organized retail theft bust

The Los Angeles Police Department arrested eight individuals, including six juveniles aged 15 and under in connection with organized retail thefts from around the city. Authorities say the eight people arrested were involved in several incidents of theft and shoplifting from local businesses. The group would then allegedly trade or sell the stolen items to vendors along the Alvarado Corridor, which is located near McArthur Park, just outside of downtown Los Angeles. One suspect, identified as 31-year-old Yoselin Quintanilla, was booked for receiving stolen property. Another adult — whose name is being withheld — was arrested for a no-bail parole violation warrant. Three juveniles between the ages of 11 and 15 were arrested for Estes robbery after the suspects were caught trying to sell stolen merchandise to vendors on the Alvarado Corridor. Two other youths who are 14 and 15 years old were referred to the Los Angeles County Juvenile Detention Program, while an 11-year-old girl was released to her parents. The identities of the juvenile suspects are being withheld due to their age. The group is accused of stealing several types of goods including

Colburn School Breaks Ground on Gehry-Designed Campus Expansion

The Colburn School for music and dance broke ground Friday on its planned 100,000-square-foot downtown Los Angeles campus expansion designed by famed architect Frank Gehry. The new building, known as the Colburn Center, will include a 1,000-seat concert hall, four professional-sized dance studios and a 100-seat studio theater in a complex constructed near another Gehry-designed landmark — the Walt Disney Concert Hall. “The Colburn Center will be a game changer, stepping up everything we do for the school’s own community, for our peer organizations that make the L.A. artistic ecosystem so vibrant, and for the public that we look forward to welcoming,” said Sel Kardan, president/CEO of the Colburn School. “At Colburn, making performances accessible to L.A. audiences is as much a part of our core mission as making first-rate music and dance education available to everyone. These are the same values we see in the wonderful design by Frank Gehry: artistic excellence at the highest level, combined with a deep love for the dynamism and diversity that animate life in a great city.” The project is expected to reach substantial completion during the first

Michael Jackson’s accusers seek to open sealed records that include nude photos of the singer

Michael Jackson’s production company is fighting to keep sealed court records out of the hands of two of his accusers ahead of a forthcoming jury trial. MJJ Productions filed a motion Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court to quash four subpoenas issued by Jackson’s alleged sex-abuse victims, Wade Robson, 41, and James Safechuck, 46. The subpoenas, directed at the county sheriff’s offices and the district attorneys of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties, are for sealed police records related to Jackson’s 2005 pedophilia charges. The production company believes Robson and Safechuck’s actual target is a series of nude photographs of Jackson included in the records. The nude photographs were taken by police in 1993 amid accusations from a 13-year-old boy that he was sexually abused by Jackson, which culminated in an estimated $20-million settlement. They are also protected by a court-entered protective order, MJJ Productions said in the Wednesday filing. “Beyond the invasion of privacy issues, the available records indicate the photographs Plaintiffs now seek are also subject to a strict protective order agreed to by Michael Jackson and Santa Barbara law enforcement and

Lakers look to keep momentum going into last five games of regular season

“We’ll be ready to play, I promise you.” That was the prediction Lakers coach Darvin Ham made to the media following Friday morning’s practice in El Segundo. His team is in playoff mode entering Saturday afternoon’s home game against Cleveland (46-31), the team with the third-best record in the East. “The key thing today was to make the focus about us,” Ham said. “Trying to sustain the stuff we’re doing good and clean up the things we’re not doing well. Of course you look at the trends. You take all of the information you’re provided and come up with different combinations and lineups that are high up in the plus-minus categories.” On the positive side, the Lakers appear to be playing as well as they have at any stage this season. However, despite winning eight of their last 10 games, they have not gained any ground in the Western Conference playoff race and remain in ninth place with five games left. Rui Hachimura said one of his friends advised him to be more aggressive and the forward has taken the message to heart. “I’m trying

ESPN executive criticized on-air by Pat McAfee leaves network after nearly 40 years

Norby Williamson, a longtime ESPN executive who was recently criticized by popular on-air personality Pat McAfee, is leaving the network after nearly 40 years, according to a memo sent to employees Friday. The move has nothing to do with McAfee, a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak about it publicly told The Times, but came about because Williamson did not share ESPN president of content Burke Magnus’ long-term vision for the company’s content strategy. In a note to employees, which was viewed by The Times, Magnus wrote: “I am reaching out with some important news. Norby Williamson will be leaving the company today after nearly 40 years of dedicated service. “During Norby’s career, he made significant contributions across many important roles within Content. Through his steadfast commitment and attention to detail, Norby has had a lasting impact on the sports fans’ experience. His wide-ranging influence includes SportsCenter, breaking news coverage, immense creativity within event and studio productions and diverse storytelling across various ESPN platforms.” The note to employees also included a message from Williamson, which read: “Almost 40 years ago in

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher‘s marriage has come to an end after 13 years. The comedians and “Brothers Grimsby” co-stars announced their split Friday, revealing in matching Instagram story posts that “in 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage.” The now-exes shared a photo on both their accounts of themselves in coordinating white athletic outfits. “After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down,” their joint statement said. A Cohen representative confirmed the legitimacy of both the stars’ posts to The Times on Friday, but did not provide additional comment. Fore! ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is indeed in development, per Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore

Almost three decades later, it’s still all in the hips. Adam Sandler confirmed rumors that a sequel to “Happy Gilmore” is in development, following Christopher McDonald’s accidental leak last month that Sandler had shown him a first draft of the script. “Dude,” Sandler said, recounting his conversation with McDonald on Wednesday’s “Dan Patrick Show,” “we’ve been talking about a ‘Happy 2’ and we’re working on some stuff… But don’t tell anybody.” The comedian spilled more info, noting that he’s collaborating with college roommate Tim Herlihy on the project and wants to use it as an opportunity to honor the late Bob Barker, Carl Weathers and Joe Flaherty, in addition to staying true to the original cast. “Netflix is excited about it,” he said. Of course, a secret like that didn’t stay secret for long. Drew Barrymore, a longtime Sandler friend and castmate, exclaimed “I want it, I need it,” in reaction to the news on her talk show on Thursday. Later in the segment, Barrymore checked her phone and then reported to the audience: “This just in, I have breaking news…. I’ll just say this
