You don’t ‘hike’ Fiery Furnace, Utah’s exclusive maze of slot canyons. You get lost in it

“Is that the trail?” I asked Steve, my longtime adventuring buddy. Not out of frustration or worry. I was more amazed at how this trail was marked, which is hardly at all. So you know, Steve has led me off trail only once in 10 years along dozens of hikes. He’s that good as a navigator. “Matt — any idea?” I asked my other friend, who was head down in his GPS app, trying to decipher the snaking mess that was our location against the supposed “trail.” The official ranger-led hike is about two miles, but if you opt to explore on your own, your trek may be much longer. (Blake Snow) Before I move on, you need to understand that GPS works only within 10 feet of your actual position, which is pretty amazing for triangulating satellites that are thousands of miles away. But not quite amazing enough for those afraid of getting lost on one of the most exclusive hikes in America: Utah’s Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. One wrong step here, and you’ll be backtracking, head scratching and disorientingly wondering whether

Pesticides pose significant risk in 20% of fruits and veggies, CR says

In addition to finding unhealthy levels of chemicals used by farmers to control bugs, fungi and weeds, one food — green beans — had residues of a pesticide that hasn’t

Georgia beach town trying to curb large annual gathering of Black students

April 18, 2024 / 5:17 AM EDT / CBS/AP Tybee Island, Ga. — Thousands of Black college students expected this weekend for an annual spring bash at Georgia’s largest public beach will be greeted by dozens of extra police officers and barricades closing off neighborhood streets. While the beach will remain open, officials are blocking access to nearby parking. Tybee Island, east of Savannah, has grappled with the April beach party known as Orange Crush since students at Savannah State University, a historically Black school, started it more than 30 years ago. Residents regularly groused about loud music, trash littering the sand and revelers urinating in yards. Those complaints boiled over into fear and outrage a year ago when record crowds estimated at more than 100,000 people overwhelmed the 3-mile island. That left a small police force scrambling to handle a flood of emergency calls reporting gunfire, drug overdoses, traffic jams and fist fights. Mayor Brian West, elected last fall by Tybee Island’s 3,100 residents, said roadblocks and added police aren’t just for limiting crowds. He hopes the crackdown will drive Orange Crush away for

Flights ramp back up at Dubai airport after historic rains inundate UAE

April 18, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS/AP Historic rain, flash flooding in Dubai Flash flooding in Dubai as storm dumps historic rainfall 04:51 Dubai, United Arab Emirates — The United Arab Emirates struggled Thursday to recover from the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation, as its main airport worked to restore normal operations even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and roads. Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. Later Thursday, the facility said in a message posted on social media that its Terminal 3 was also reopening for flight check-in, but it warned passengers to come only if their pending departure was confirmed due to “a high volume of guests in the check-in area.” “Flights continue to be delayed and disrupted, so we urge you to only come to Terminal 1 if you have a confirmed booking,” the airport said in its series of tweets. Kennedy Jr.’s family, including six of his siblings, are endorsing President Biden in Philadelphia Thursday even as he makes his own bid for Biden’s job as an independent candidate. Kennedy’s sister, Kerry Kennedy, is expected to praise Mr. Biden as a leader in the mold of her father, Robert F. Kennedy, who “stood for equal justice, human rights and freedom from want and fear — just as President Biden does today,” according to excerpts of her remarks released by the Biden campaign. Her father served as attorney general in John F. Kennedy’s administration and was running for president himself when he was assassinated in 1968. Speaking for the family members who are endorsing Mr. Biden, Kerry Kennedy will also have harsh words for presumptive Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump. “I can only imagine how Donald Trump’s outrageous lies and behavior would have horrified my father,” she’s expected to say

The community spoke, city leaders listened. Year-round lighting coming to Paso Robles City Park

The City of Paso Robles is unveiling brand new year-round lighting in City Park. City leaders say the decision comes after the success of the holiday lighting display in November 2023. Crowds flocked to City Park until the lights were turned off in January 2024, enjoying the vibrant ambiance and expressing a heightened sense of safety in the festive environment. City leaders say merchants and hoteliers experienced increased business and occupancy rates, with a 20% surge in Transient Occupancy Tax in December alone. City Council expressed a desire to bring year-round lighting to City Park, encouraged by the enthusiastic feedback from residents and local leaders. To pull of the new display, city staff collaborated with L.A. Christmas Light Installers (LACLI), the designers and installers of the holiday lights, to propose a comprehensive plan for year-round lighting. The year-round display includes illuminating 21 trees in City Park, with a focus on enhancing the beauty of the large heritage oaks. Depending on tree size and structure, anywhere from 30 to 150 lights will be installed in each designated tree. The proposed lighting utilizes durable and waterproof lights

California bill to eliminate plastic ‘reusable’ shopping bags advances

A state bill to close a loophole in California’s single-use plastic bag ban that allows stores to distribute a “recyclable” alternative passed through its first hurdle. Senate Bill 1053, introduced by Sen. Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas) and Sen. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), was approved by the State Environmental Quality Committee in a 5-2 vote on Wednesday. The bill would remove a provision from the ban allowing stores to use thicker, “reusable” bags made out of recycled plastic film. It would also revise the requirement for stores to only provide paper bags made out of 100 percent recycled material, an increase from the previous 40 percent. California is investigating whether those thicker, plastic shopping bags really are recyclable “Plastic waste is destroying our environment and jeopardizing our planet,” Blakespear said in a statement. “A plastic bag has an average lifespan of 12 minutes and then it is discarded, afflicting our environment with toxic microplastics that impact our oceans and landfills for up to 1,000 years. SB 1053 will dramatically cut California’s plastic bag pollution.” California implemented its single-use plastic bag ban in 2016, two years after the

The Biden administration might ban TikTok. These Latinx small-business owners are worried

After years of dreaming, Ruben Trujillo had finally launched his own business. It didn’t go the way he had expected. It was 2020 and he was having a tough time. Trujillo had just become the primary caregiver for his grandmother, he was let go from his full-time teaching job, and Cafe Emporos, the company he launched that sells personalized coffee filters, was struggling. “I had this dream, and now I have nothing to show for it,” Trujillo remembered thinking. “I was like, ‘OK, I failed.’ This is what failure feels like. This is the bottom of the bottom.” Having “nothing to lose,” Trujillo stood in front of a red background with Christmas lights and recorded a few TikTok videos plugging his product. “They hold cups of coffee inside,” Trujillo said, giving a demonstration of a packet emblazoned with a group photo and a personalized message. He opened the packet, which expands into a single-use filter that a customer can pour hot water into for a fresh cup of coffee. Suddenly, the clip began picking up views and comments. “This is no lie the most fascinating

Transient Charged with Setting Fire That Destroyed Four Palm Desert Businesses

A 30-year-old transient accused of igniting a fire that destroyed four businesses in a Palm Desert strip mall was charged Wednesday with recklessly causing a fire resulting in property damage and other offenses. Natalie Ann Marie Radu was arrested Sunday following a Cal Fire arson investigation at the Plaza de Monterey Shopping Center. Along with the felony count, Radu is charged with a sentence-enhancing allegation of perpetrating arson in an area under a state of emergency. Radu pleaded not guilty during an arraignment before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Melissa Hale, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for April 26 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. The judge ordered Radu held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. The strip mall, located near the intersection of Country Club Drive and Monterey Avenue, sustained massive damage in the fire that erupted shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. According to county fire officials, multiple engine crews were sent to the two-alarm blaze and encountered flames raging in one business, spreading rapidly to three neighboring ones in the 30,000-square-foot single-story building. Disneyland’s $1.9-billion expansion project is latest mega investment in the Anaheim resort

Walt Disney famously said that Disneyland will never be completed. He was right. The vote by the Anaheim City Council on Wednesday to approve the Disneyland resort’s $1.9-billion expansion plan is the latest of several huge investments made by the media giant at the 100-acre facility known to its fans as the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Once upon a time, Disneyland was just a concept that grew out of a visit by Disney to Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Then on July 17, 1955, the gates were flung open at the then-$17.5-million resort and things have never been the same for the city of Anaheim. Ticket prices on opening day were $1 for an adult and 50 cents for a child, with each attraction charging extra at each location, ranging from 10 to 35 cents. Over the decades, the resort has added new attractions and entire worlds built around new franchises acquired by Disney. Bear Country opened in 1972 and gave way to Critter Country in 1988 in anticipation of Splash Mountain, which eventually closed in May 2023. Splash Mountain will be reopened later this
