A’s spring training: J.D. Davis calls release by SF Giants a punch to the gut

New A’s third baseman J.D. Davis said he’s appreciative of his opportunity with Oakland after absorbing “a punch to the gut” when the Giants released him earlier this week. Davis, who finalized his $2.5 million, one-year deal with the A’s on Saturday, was cut by the Giants, who utilized a contractual loophole to part ways with the 30-year-old on Monday after he beat the team last month in arbitration. “It was a punch to the gut,” Davis told MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos. “You’re getting the rug pulled out from under you in a way where you’re not expecting that entirely. … It’s just part of the business of baseball. But to have that happen, I definitely had some lows in there. “However, this opportunity over here seems a little bit better than what it was over there, so I’m grateful for it.” Although Davis was awarded a $6.9 million salary after an arbitration hearing, under baseball’s collective bargaining agreement, arbitration-eligible players’ contracts are only guaranteed if they’re not decided by an arbitration panel. The Giants began the process of releasing Davis not long after signing free-agent

How the end of Warriors-Lakers devolved into ‘bizarre’ mess

LOS ANGELES — Sitting next to his wife, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck slumped back in his courtside seat with a pained look on his face. Across the court, tennis superstar Novak Djokovic looked around for answers. Gary Payton II and Lester Quinones danced in front of Golden State’s bench, clearly restless. It took 23 minutes of actual time to complete the final two minutes of the Warriors’ win over the Lakers. A pair of drawn-out replay reviews disrupted the flow of a tight game, and a Crypto.com Arena shot clock malfunction brought it to a screeching halt. The officiating crew tried restarting play twice, only for the shot clock to remain frozen. Without working shot clocks, or apparently operational backup machines, the Lakers’ public address announcer finished the last 1:35 by informing the arena of the shot clock time every five seconds. “That was crazy,” Draymond Green said postgame. “Just finish the game already. That was nuts. But we got through it.” A Crypto.com Arena spokesperson and shot clock engineer declined to comment when approached after the game. The stoppages weren’t without drama. Los Angeles

15-year-old Chowchilla girl headed to historical golf course for tournament

CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (KFSN) — For the past two years, we’ve shown you the rise of golfing sensation Asterisk Talley. “I’ve definitely gotten taller, so it’s been an advantage,” she said. The 15-year-old has already won multiple tournaments, most notably last summer’s Rolex Girls Junior Championship in South Carolina. “After that, I just played my best and I didn’t really have any super bad rounds,” she said. “I just kept being consistent with top teams.” That consistency earned the Chowchilla native a special invitation to one of golf’s most prestigious venues — a spot to play in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this April. “Hearing that news was pretty exciting,” says her dad, James. “We kind of held out to tell her until she got out school.” “Augusta wasn’t really a big goal that I had,” she said. “It was just out of reach, from what I thought.” Asterisk has been among the Augusta Azaleas before, competing in the 2022 drive, chip and putt competition. She even shook hands with former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. “That’s so special at the time, but just getting to

Warriors meet the moment to beat Lakers in possible play-in preview

LOS ANGELES — From the courtside celebrities to the star power in the nationally televised game and tense finish, much of Saturday night’s game felt like a playoff game. The Warriors and Lakers, projected to play each other in an elimination play-in game exactly a month from Saturday’s meeting, lived up to the big-game billing. Each team appeared to bring their top-level intensity, Warriors coach Steve Kerr trimmed his rotation to a playoff-style nine. The game took on a different tone when Lakers star Anthony Davis suffered a corneal abrasion and didn’t return after the first quarter. And then it turned bizarre at the end, when the shot clock was suddenly fried. “Definitely weird,” Steph Curry said of the ending. “I watch a lot of golf, I want to know if they did like that ‘playing through’ thing where you see the commercials running and you’re just waiting for the game to come back. Probably not the greatest for TV.” Still, in front of Kim Kardashian, Bad Bunny and Novak Djokovic, Curry, Klay Thompson and Jonathan Kuminga combined for 80 points to vault the Warriors

‘Unacceptable’ start dooms Sharks in loss to Columbus Blue Jackets

The San Jose Sharks came alive a little bit too late Saturday night. With the Sharks looking listless for most of the first two periods and trailing the Columbus Blue Jackets by two goals, defenseman Henry Thrun scored at the 11:42 mark of the third period to give his team a badly needed spark. But the Sharks could not find the equalizer as Columbus goalie Daniil Tarasov made 39 saves to help hand San Jose a 4-2 loss on Saturday at Nationwide Arena. After the Sharks pulled goalie Magnus Chrona for the extra attacker, Alex Nylander scored an empty net goal with 1:05 left in regulation time to seal the Blue Jackets victory. “Just really not engaged physically,” Sharks coach David Quinn said of the first period. “I thought we give them way too much room, way too much respect. It was easy for them, too easy. “But I thought as the game went on, we got more engaged, we were more physical when we needed to be.” The Sharks now continue their road trip Sunday in Chicago against Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks. “We’ve

Alex Cobb’s ambitious rehab: How SF Giants’ starter hurried back from hip surgery

PHOENIX — In the shadow of two buttes, Alex Cobb’s four-month odyssey came full circle. It was here, at the Giants’ Papago Park training complex, that Cobb arrived every morning at 9 a.m. Where every day he went through five to six hours of rehabilitation. And, on Saturday afternoon, where he pitched in his first game since last September, before he underwent surgery on his left hip. “I put in a lot of sweat in the gym here,” Cobb said, standing to the side of the second of four fields, where he just completed two innings against the A’s Single-A squad. “I started having that feeling when I first got in here to warm up. It was wild to just feel like I was here yesterday rehabbing and we’re already almost at the end of spring.” With a week left before the Giants break camp, the 36-year-old right-hander is further along than anybody — perhaps except himself — could have envisioned when Dr. Marc Philippon took a knife to his left hip on Oct. 31 in Vail, Colorado. He had five anchors inserted, three bone

From Los Gatos to the NHL: New Sharks goalie returns home in full circle moment

Devin Cooley had a somewhat spontaneous introduction to ice skating as a young boy growing up in the South Bay. His older brother, Ryan, was part of an 11-member Cub Scout group trying to earn skating badges. So his mom and dad, Heynia Loro-Cooley and Scott Cooley, and other parents took the boys to an outdoor rink in Palo Alto. Devin, then 5, saw everyone on the ice and wanted to get out there as well, and Heynia obliged by putting skates on him, too. “He’d never skated before,” Heynia said. “So, I put skates on the kid and he took off. He was better than his older brother.” Cooley hasn’t stopped since. Cooley, now 26 and in his fourth professional season, will make his NHL debut Sunday night when the San Jose Sharks play the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. A Los Gatos native, Cooley will become just the fourth player from Santa Clara County to suit up for an NHL game, and the first to do it in a Sharks uniform. Cooley’s parents were ecstatic to hear their son had been acquired by
