Blind geese in North Carolina are looking for their forever home

Tuesday, March 5, 2024 4:38PM Blind geese in North Carolina are looking for their forever home INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — An animal rescue group in North Carolina is looking for a forever home for a unique trio of geese. The geese have to stay together because two of them are blind. The third acts like a “seeing eye goose”. The previous owner moved across the country and could not take them. The geese take care of themselves but need to stay in a fenced-in area to protect the two who are blind. If you are interested in adopting them, the trio is at the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and Sanctuary in Union County. Copyright © 2024 WTVD-TV. All Rights Reserved.

CA Senate race: Democrats aim to block Republican from contest to fill Feinstein’s seat

SAN FRANCISCO — Several prominent House Democrats are jostling to fend off Republican former baseball great Steve Garvey in the yearlong battle to fill the U.S. Senate seat once held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, with two slots on California’s November ballot at stake. In a state where a Republican hasn’t won a Senate race since 1988, Democrats are expected to easily hold the seat in November, a relief for the party as it seeks to defend a fragile Senate majority. But first-time candidate Garvey, a National League MVP and former star for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, reordered the contest that also features Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter and Adam Schiff. California puts all candidates, regardless of party, on one primary ballot, and the two who get the most votes advance to the general election. For months, Schiff has had the fundraising and polling edge, but it’s possible Garvey could claim the second spot on the November ballot, ending the congressional careers of Porter and Lee, two prominent progressives. It would be a blow in particular to Porter, whose

Oakland A’s bright spot Gelof brings hot bat to Cactus League

MESA, Ariz. – After being named MLB’s rookie of the month last August in his first full month as a major leaguer, Zach Gelof is continuing his hot streak in spring training, driving the ball to all parts of the field. As the A’s have had a ton of moving parts throughout the last few seasons, Gelof looks to be the second baseman of the future for the team, a role manager Mark Kotsay is cognizant of as Gelof enters his first full season. “I think Zach has just picked up where he left off,” Kotsay said. “The year he had last year was pretty remarkable for a player to come in and have that type of impact immediately and I think for us, our focus is to get him out of here healthy and prepare for a season where he potentially has 500 to 600 at-bats.” In Gelof’s 21 at-bats in spring training entering this week, he leads all of Cactus League with five extra-base hits. The power should come as no surprise for A’s fans, as the 24-year-old finished last season with 14

Small plane crashes near Nashville interstate and 5 people aboard were killed, police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Five people aboard a single-engine plane died when the aircraft crashed near an interstate highway in Nashville, Tennessee, authorities said. The pilot made an emergency call to John C. Tune Airport around 7:40 p.m. Monday, reported engine trouble and was given clearance to make an emergency landing, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said. A short time later the pilot radioed that the aircraft would not reach the airport, he said. The plane burst into flames when it crashed in a grassy median just off Interstate 40 and behind a Costco on the city’s westside. The crash scene was about 3 miles south of the general aviation airport. “It appears that everyone on board perished,” Aaron said. In a statement early Tuesday on the social media platform X, police said five people died. It said the Federal Aviation Administration was at the scene and the National Transportation Safety Board planned to arrive Tuesday. Authorities also were working to determine from where the plane originated. There were no injuries to drivers on the interstate, Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney said. Authorities

With Ramadan days away, the latest talks on Gaza have ended with no breakthrough

CAIRO (AP) — Three days of negotiations with Hamas over a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages ended Tuesday without a breakthrough, Egyptian officials said, less than a week before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the informal deadline for a deal. The United States, Qatar and Egypt have spent weeks trying to broker an agreement in which Hamas would release up to 40 hostages in return for a monthlong cease-fire, the release of some Palestinian prisoners and an influx of aid to address the humanitarian catastrophe in the isolated territory. Two Egyptian officials said the latest round of discussions had ended. They said Hamas presented a proposal that mediators would discuss with Israel in the coming days. Hamas has refused to release all of the estimated 100 hostages it holds, and the remains of around 30 more, unless Israel ends its offensive, withdraws from the territory and releases a large number of Palestinian prisoners. Jihad Taha, a Hamas spokesperson, said the negotiations were ongoing but “the ball is in the Israeli court.” He said Israel had thus far refused Hamas’

Industrial fire and multiple explosions shoot debris into the air in Detroit suburb | VIDEO

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A fire raging at an industrial facility caused multiple explosions that rocked suburban Detroit on Monday night and sent debris shooting far into the air, prompting police to implore residents to stay inside. The debris fell as far as a mile (1.6 kilometers) away, the Clinton Township Police Department said on Facebook. Authorities said they didn’t know exactly what was burning or the potential health effects from it. “We can not stress enough the danger that is happening right now,” one police post said. “Please, please, please stay inside and out of the vicinity.” Police said the fire was burning near 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway. News helicopter videos showed a massive, bright orange area of fire with bursts of flames within the blaze that looked like explosions. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel told WDIV-TV late Monday that the explosions started around 9 p.m. at the Select Distributors plant and that Clinton Township officers and firefighters immediately responded. “They understand some type of CO2 or propane explosions were taking place at the facility, and again, it was just continuous explosions

Tune Airport after reporting engine and power failure around 7:40 p.m. Monday, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron said. But the pilot soon told air traffic control that they wouldn’t make it to the tarmac. By Ramishah Maruf, CNN , CNNWire Tuesday, March 5, 2024 10:45AM The Amazon founder’s net worth was $200 billion, while Musk followed at $198 billion. Jeff Bezos has reclaimed the title of the richest person on earth, surpassing Elon Musk, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index on Monday. The Amazon founder’s net worth was $200 billion, while Musk followed at $198 billion. Musk has lost about $31 billion over the past year, while Bezos has gained $23 billion, according to the index. Tesla shares had tumbled more than 7% on Monday. Musk had reclaimed the title of world’s richest person in May 2023, edging out LVMH (LVMHF) CEO Bernard Arnault, who runs one of the world’s biggest conglomerates and includes brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Celine. The three centibillionaires – Musk, Arnault and Bezos – have been in competition with each other for the top spot for months. Arnault had held the title as his wealth climbed due to a boom in luxury goods sales that helped drive up LVMH’s stock price. Earlier this year, a Delaware state court judge threw out Musk’s

What to watch for on Super Tuesday 2024

The beginning of the end of the 2024 presidential primaries starts Tuesday, when President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to all but clinch a rematch of their 2020 contest eight months ahead of the November general election. There will be contests in 15 states on this year’s Super Tuesday, with voters going to the polls in every time zone in the continental US, from Alaska and California to Colorado, Minnesota and North Carolina. Results from the Democratic Iowa mail-in caucus will also be reported. By the time it’s done, Biden and Trump are both expected to have racked up large numbers of delegates and showdowns will be in place for critical congressional seats and powerful governor’s mansions. The primaries will also offer additional insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the leading candidates as big-dollar campaigns test their standing with key pieces of the electorate across a country that appears as divided as ever. Inside the parties, long-simmering ideological battles will play out in typically low-turnout, down-ballot primaries. For former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Trump’s last remaining hurdle to his

Dog rescued from alleged animal abuse

RED BLUFF —  The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a man for allegedly abusing a dog. Richard Sexton called 911 around 6:30 a.m. Saturday and reported a home invasion occurring at his home in the Ponderosa Sky Ranch, according to a Saturday press release issued by TCSO. TCSORichard Sexton Deputies responded and contacted Sexton. They performed a safety sweep for suspects inside the house. Immediately after entering the home, the deputies suffered acute respiratory distress and discovered that Sexton had deployed multiple “bug bomb” aerosol insecticide fumigators throughout the small mobile home. Law enforcement heard a dog in distress in the back of the trailer and continued to attempt an animal rescue. The release said Sexton had deployed so much fumigation that the deputies were forced to withdraw from the house. The Cal Fire crew at Paynes Creek station responded and utilized their breathing apparatus to rescue the dog, which appeared to be in severe respiratory distress. Sexton admitted to using methamphetamine and setting off the fumigators inside where the dog was located, the release said. Deputies drove the dog to a local veterinary

Views on today’s, November’s elections | The way I see it

My views on the supervisor contest: To tell you that, I’ll tell you this, as they say. Through no fault of our own, we cannot vote in the March 5 primary. We routinely have mail forwarded north for ski season. For good reasons, election ballots are not forwarded, which discourages fraud. Too late for us, we found out that if we had changed our address with the elections department, ballots would have been sent to our Oregon address. For the November elections, we’re always back in Red Bluff after summer travels. However, we live in District 3, which I found has no contest. Our seer-of-all-local-things, Ms. Merry, “The Merry Mantonian,” has voluminous information; also, actionnewsnow.com carried “Meet the candidates running for three open seats for Tehama County Supervisor” (Feb. 12). I can only offer personal input, however irrelevant it might be. While having nothing discouraging to say about her opponent, I have to share my experience with Ms. Kris Deiters from back in my real estate days, covering nearly 16 years in several offices and brokerages. Kris is fondly remembered as an accomplished title officer

Tehama County settling on Corning Veterans Memorial Hall remodel

RED BLUFF —  The Tehama County Board of Supervisors recently discussed the Corning Veterans Memorial Hall remodel designs. County staff said elements of the project will be prioritized based on the ranking of needs in the evaluation as funding permits. The supervisors have authorized them to proceed with securing design services for the Corning Veterans Hall Remodel Project based on a previous evaluation by Nichols, Melburg, and Rosetto. As of Tuesday, the major engineering work is being done. The county has estimated it will be wrapped up in the next few months. Staff planned to go through the bid process and start work in mid-June or early July. “The one possible wrench in that is we are still working through the process to get our federal funds,” Administrative Analyst Tom Provine said. The project is funded by $2 million secured through 2023 Community Project funding requested by Congressman LaMalfa and another $2 million authorized by the supervisors from Tehama County’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds. Provine said essentially, what happens with that community project funding is it gets set aside and then goes
