Power outages and hail impact some Fresno neighborhoods and businesses

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Thunder, rain, hail, and even lightning hit Central California on Friday afternoon. Daniel Cruz was heading into work when he got caught up in the wild weather. “Just got on the highway, five minutes later, nothing but heavy rain, hail, heavy hail,” said Cruz. “Then 10 minutes later nothing but sunshine.” That heavy hail weighed down on nets outside of Full Circle Brewing. The brewery put up the nets just two days ago. When workers saw that the hail pulled down the nets, they quickly sprang into action to get it fixed. “We had one over here, what they call a grommet, hold on a corner and a quarter inch cable that holds it just snap and it ripped the grommet right out of it,” said Kelly Rogers with Full Circle Brewing. “So, we had to replace that and replace the cable.” Rogers said this spring storm is not something he expected. “We’re in the April right,” said Rogers, “a few showers the warm kind of spring showers that we get here but nothing like ice out of the sky.” In

Here’s how. LOS ANGELES — If you purchased weighted groceries or bagged fruit at Walmart in recent years, you may be eligible for a cash payment from a class action settlement with the retailer. The class action lawsuit, first filed in October 2022, alleges that Walmart shoppers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico who purchased certain sold-by-weight meat and seafood as well as select citrus sold in bulk bags paid more than the lowest price advertised in stores. Walmart has denied any wrongdoing – but agreed to pay $45 million to settle the litigation. That means that impacted consumers can now submit claims for cash payments. “We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need,” a spokesperson for the Bentonville, Arkansas, company stated. “We still deny the allegations, however we believe a settlement is in the best interest of

Donald Trump is demanding a new judge just days before the start of his hush-money criminal trial

By MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is demanding a new judge just days before his hush-money criminal trial is set to begin, rehashing longstanding grievances with the current judge in a long-shot, eleventh-hour bid to disrupt and delay the case. Trump’s lawyers — echoing his recent social media complaints — urged Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan to step aside from the case, alleging bias and a conflict of interest because his daughter is a Democratic political consultant. The judge rejected a similar request last August. In court papers made public Friday, Trump’s lawyers said it is improper for Merchan “to preside over these proceedings while Ms. Merchan benefits, financially and reputationally, from the manner in which this case is interfering” with Trump’s campaign as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. The trial is scheduled to begin April 15. It is the first of Trump’s four criminal cases scheduled to go to trial and would be the first-ever criminal trial of a former president. Merchan didn’t immediately rule. The decision is entirely up to him. If he were to

Luka Doncic out for Mavericks, but Warriors are short-staffed, too

DALLAS — The Warriors caught a big break before going for their seventh straight victory. Luka Doncic, the Mavericks’ all-world guard, was ruled out with right knee soreness. Dallas entered Friday night’s contest 3-6 in games Doncic missed this season. Doncic is leading the NBA in scoring at 33.8 points per game. He also ranks second in assists (9.8) and 16th in rebounds per game (9.2). Without Doncic, Dallas’ offensive machine — ranked sixth in offensive rating — is suddenly Kyrie Irving’s to operate. “You still have plenty to worry about without Luka,” Steve Kerr said pregame. “Obviously Kyrie becomes the focal point, but they have guys that are still very capable. (Tim) Hardaway and (Jaden) Hardy … those guys will be very aggressive.” The Warriors aren’t at full-strength, either. Andrew Wiggins, who has put together his best stretch of his season recently, is sidelined with ankle soreness. Jonathan Kuminga will also miss his sixth straight game with bilateral knee tendinitis. Kuminga warmed up on the American Airlines court, but was shortly thereafter ruled out. Without Kuminga and Wiggins, the Warriors wouldn’t have much of

Former Hanford police therapy dogs to continue serving the community

HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) — Emotional support for people in Hanford will come from two Therapy dogs — now being re-assigned to a local non-profit. That’s after the Hanford police Department ended their program. “We know the dogs can be successful, they have amazing personalities and we didn’t want that to go to waste, and there are a lot of community resources that went into that as well, and we decided ‘nope, they can become part of our pack,” mentions Perla Trejo, who co-founded HAPPI, or Hands and Paws Prevail, with Macarena Etcheberry. Their non-profit HAPPI is on a mission to give Penny and Bebe a new shot at serving the community. The labradoodle and goldendoodle duo are on their way to a new assignment. The two therapy dogs were a part of the Hanford Police Department for two years. The department ended the program due to financial reasons. State auditor criticizes cannabis licensing process in Fresno, other CA cities

Saturday, April 6, 2024 1:13AM The State Auditor is zeroing in on the City of Fresno, criticizing how it licenses legal cannabis dispensaries. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The State Auditor is zeroing in on the City of Fresno, criticizing how it licenses legal cannabis dispensaries. In a 60-page audit released last week, the state auditor found the possibility of corruption and conflicts of interest. State Auditor Grant Parks wrote Fresno’s “process lacks transparency for how potentially lucrative cannabis-related permits are being issued by the city manager, possibly eroding public trust in the process.” Robin Goldstein is an economist at UC Davis, where he studies cannabis markets. He broke down the audit during an interview with Action News. “I think the issues in Fresno, in particular, related to having no appeals process for applicants,” Goldstein said. “The idea of no blind scoring. The idea that there wasn’t anonymity in the process was also problematic.” The report also criticizes the city manager’s power to approve applications, but city communications director Sontaya Rose says that is what the city council wanted. “The ordinance passed by the Fresno City
