Who is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and why is he running for president?

By JONATHAN J. COOPER (Associated Press) The lack of excitement many Americans feel about a presidential rematch has heightened interest in alternatives to the major-party candidates, none more so than Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose famous name has helped him build buzz for his independent bid. Kennedy is a huge longshot to win Electoral College votes, much less the presidency. But his campaign events have drawn large crowds of supporters and people interested in his message. He plans to announce his vice presidential nominee later this month in Oakland, California, and is stoking expectations that he might pick New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers or former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. Here is a look at his campaign and what he’s stood for: Who is RFK Jr? Kennedy, 70, is a member of perhaps the nation’s most famous political dynasty. His uncle was President John F. Kennedy. His father served as attorney general and a U.S. senator before seeking the Democratic nomination for president. Both were assassinated. RFK Jr. built a reputation of his own as an activist, author and lawyer who fought for environmental causes such as clean water. More recently, his activism

Biden and Netanyahu hold first call in more than a month as tension grows over food crisis, war

By AAMER MADHANI, ZEKE MILLER and JULIA FRANKEL (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Monday, their first interaction in more than a month, as the divide has grown between allies over the food crisis in Gaza and conduct of the war, according to the White House. The call comes after Republicans in Washington and Israeli officials were quick to express outrage after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza and called for Israel to hold new elections. They accused the Democratic leader of breaking the unwritten rule against interfering in a close ally’s electoral politics. Biden hasn’t endorsed Schumer’s call for election but said he thought he gave a “good speech” that reflected the concerns of many Americans. The White House has been skeptical of Netanyahu’s plan of carrying out an operation in the southern city of Rafah, to which more than a 1 million displaced Palestinians have fled, as Israel looks to eliminate Hamas following Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack. Biden administration officials have warned that they would not support such an operation without the Israelis

Businesses are ready for April’s total solar eclipse with celestial-themed doughnuts and beer

By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS (AP Business Writer) NEW YORK (AP) — Eclipse-themed beer. Jewelry and ornaments. And doughnuts that capture the sun’s disappearing act with the help of buttercream frosting. With April 8’s total solar eclipse right around the corner, businesses are ready for the celestial event that will dim skies along a generous path across North America. There are oodles of special eclipse safety glasses for sale, along with T-shirts emblazoned with clever slogans and other souvenirs — just like the last time the U.S. got a big piece of the total solar eclipse action in 2017. Hotels and resorts along the prime path are luring in visitors with special packages and Southwest and Delta are selling seats on eclipse-viewing flights. Cities, museums and parks are staging watch parties to draw in tourists as well as residents. “This is a special event and … the travel industry certainly is in a very good spot,” said Jie Zhang, a marketing professor at the University of Maryland’s business school. She also noted the eclipse craze arrives at a time when consumers are continuing to ramp up spending on new experiences. Closer to eclipse day, there are likely to be more

Trump’s lawyers say it is impossible for him to post bond covering $454 million civil fraud judgment

By MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s lawyers told a New York appellate court Monday that it’s impossible for him to post a bond covering the full amount of a $454 million civil fraud judgment while he appeals. The former president’s lawyers wrote in a court filing that “obtaining an appeal bond in the full amount” of the judgment “is not possible under the circumstances presented.” Trump’s lawyers asked the state’s intermediate appeals court to overturn a previous ruling requiring that he post a bond covering the full amount in order to halt enforcement while he appeals the judgment in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit. With interest, Trump owes $456.8 million. In all, he and co-defendants, including his company, sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr. and other executives, owe $467.3 million. To obtain a bond, they would be required to post collateral worth $557 million, Trump’s lawyers said. Trump is appealing Judge Arthur Engoron ruling in February that he, his company and top executives, including his sons, schemed for years to deceive banks and insurers by inflating his

EPA bans asbestos, a deadly carcinogen still in use decades after a partial ban was enacted

By MATTHEW DALY (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday announced a comprehensive ban on asbestos, a carcinogen that kills tens of thousands of Americans every year but is still used in some chlorine bleach, brake pads and other products. The final rule marks a major expansion of EPA regulation under a landmark 2016 law that overhauled regulations governing tens of thousands of toxic chemicals in everyday products, from household cleaners to clothing and furniture. The new rule would ban chrysotile asbestos, the only ongoing use of asbestos in the United States. The substance is found in products such as brake linings and gaskets and is used to manufacture chlorine bleach and sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, including some that is used for water purification. EPA Administrator Michael Regan called the final rule a major step to protect public health. “With today’s ban, EPA is finally slamming the door on a chemical so dangerous that it has been banned in over 50 countries,” Regan said. ”This historic ban is more than 30 years in the making, and it’s thanks

Trump’s “bloodbath” comment at rally stirring more controversy

Former President Donald Trump is under fire for the language he used at a rally in Ohio over the weekend. “We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected,” Trump said. “Now if I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.” CBS News campaign reporter Jake Rosen has more.

Oracle Park will have a new voice this season: SF Giants, Renel Brooks-Moon part ways

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the first time in its history, the voice of the San Francisco Giants’ waterfront ballpark will not be Renel Brooks-Moon’s. The Giants’ longtime public address announcer will step away after 24 seasons, the club announced Monday. Less than three weeks away from their home opener, the official release did not name a successor or specify who would lead the ceremonies on April 5. “As a Bay Area native, it has been the honor of my lifetime to serve on the mic, and in the community for the Giants for 24 years,” Brooks-Moon said in a statement. “My very first game on April 11, 2000, I shall never forget because the job has always been bigger than me. Representation matters, and it is my great hope that my time in the booth has inspired little girls, young women and people of color to pursue their dreams even if those dreams seem impossible, because impossible dreams can come true.” Having been on the microphone for the Giants’ three World Series runs, Matt Cain’s perfect game and Barry Bonds’ pursuits of home run history

Slackin’ for Macklin update: Sharks in driver’s seat after latest loss

When it comes to winning the NHL Draft Lottery and earning the right to select center Macklin Celebrini, the San Jose Sharks are in the driver’s seat – for now. The Sharks’ 5-2 loss to Chicago at the United Center on Sunday kept them in last place in the NHL’s overall standings – now four points back of the 31st-place Blackhawks — with a month left in the regular season. The Sharks got here by having a league-worst 2-12-2 record since Feb. 14 when they returned from a two-week break. If the Sharks (16-44-7) remain in last place, they’ll have a 25.5 percent chance of winning the lottery – something that’s never happened in team history – and taking Celebrini, the former Jr. Sharks star who was the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division I this regular season with 30 goals and 55 points in 33 games for Boston University. The draft lottery odds for the team with the second-worst record drop to 13.5 percent, and 11.5 percent for the third-worst team. If the Sharks finish with the NHL’s worst record, they will draft no lower

Why a contract extension for 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk will be later rather than sooner

If it were only so easy as having Brandon Aiyuk play at his fifth-year option rate of just over $14 million, then the 49ers could take a big step toward getting their financial house in order heading into another run for a Super Bowl. But Aiyuk is not going to do that any more than Nick Bosa was going to play for $17.5 million a year ago on his fifth-year option, which means the 49ers will be negotiating a big-money extension with one of their best players. It’s why there is rampant speculation — a small amount merited, much of it social media-fueled nonsense — that the 49ers are open to trading either Aiyuk or fellow wideout Deebo Samuel. The 49ers made Bosa the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL with a five-year extension worth $170 million with $122.5 million in guarantees and an average salary per year (APY) of $34 million. Aiyuk won’t get that, but the 49ers and every other team have a ceiling in mind when it comes to putting together a roster puzzle. Recent deals with wideouts Michael Pittman of Indianapolis and

The Princess of Wales controversy has only gotten worse

The public absence of Catherine, Princess of Wales, has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline in a matter of weeks. While Kensington Palace said her January abdominal surgery was planned and indicated she would be out of the public eye through March, several unusual details – grainy photos, an altered image, vague medical information, irregular updates from the British royal family – have kept the public guessing. That’s never a good thing. Catherine’s so-called disappearance has led TikTok and X users to swan dive into bizarre conspiracy theories and jokes so thickly intertextual it makes one wonder if social media really does give us brain worms. Droves of amateur detectives have crafted timelines and deep dives into the princess’ movements over the last few months, combining real concern with outlandish conspiracy. Regular people moonlighting as photo forensics specialists have suggested recent images of Kate are fabricated, spinning theories on where she actually is and who they think is trying to cover up the “truth.” RELATED: Princess Kate responds to photoshopped image after photo redacted by news agencies And yes, there

Boeing tells airlines to check pilot seats after report that an accidental shift led plane to plunge

By DAVID KOENIG Monday, March 18, 2024 1:10PM The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled and was to continue to Santiago, Chile. Boeing is telling airlines to inspect switches on pilots’ seats in its 787 Dreamliner jets after a published report said an accidental cockpit seat movement likely caused the sudden plunge of a LATAM Airlines plane flying to New Zealand. Boeing said Friday it recommended that airlines inspect the motorized cockpit seats the next time they perform maintenance on their 787s. The aircraft manufacturer pointed to instructions that include how to disable motors that move the seats. The company described its advisory as a “precautionary measure.” It did not link the memo to what happened this week on a LATAM Airlines flight between Australia and New Zealand. The Federal Aviation Administration said, however, that the Boeing memo was issued “in response to the incident on LATAM Flight 800.” The FAA said it was convening a panel of experts to review Boeing’s message to airlines. LATAM Airlines, based in Chile, initially said there was “a technical event during the flight which caused

A’s spring training: J.D. Davis wastes no time impressing in Oakland debut

It took just two pitches and one swing for the J.D. Davis Redemption Tour to begin as the A’s new third baseman smoked a double to the gap in left-center Sunday in his first spring training at-bat for Oakland. Davis, who signed with the A’s Friday after being unceremoniously released by the Giants earlier in the week, looked comfortable in his green No. 5 Oakland jersey. He handled his only chance at third base and went 1-for-2 while batting sixth against the Chicago White Sox in what ended as a 3-3 spring training tie. Davis hadn’t played since getting two hits and two RBIs for the Giants on March 4, but he looked in midseason form while unloading on San Jose-born Chicago starter Nick Nastrini’s 1-0 fastball for a double. Davis, who hit .400 with two home runs in 15 at-bats with the Giants, grounded out in his only other at-bat as he played just five innings before getting the rest of the game off. The A’s salvaged a 3-3 tie when Will Simpson, a 22-year-old first baseman and their No. 30 ranked prospect, launched
