Gun, ammo, jacket stolen from FBI agent’s vehicle in East Oakland

OAKLAND — The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it is working with Oakland police to recover a gun, magazine and jacket stolen from an agent’s vehicle this week, authorities said.

In a statement Thursday, the FBI said the theft happened around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Hegenberger Gateway shopping center, 8450 Edgewater Drive, in East Oakland.

The take included a Colt M-4 semi-automatic rifle, a magazine loaded with .45 caliber ammunition and a field-agent raid jacket.

No word was immediately available on how the gun and ammunition were stored in the vehicle.

Last month, an Oakland man found with a gun stolen from a California Highway Patrol officer was sentenced to five years in prison.

And on Wednesday, San Luis Obispo police said they were looking for a gun stolen after the chief left it in a fast-food restaurant’s restroom.

A 2016 investigation by this news organization found nearly a thousand guns had been stolen from Bay Area, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the state since 2010.

A $5,000 reward is available in exchange for the items’ recovery, and anyone with information should call the FBI San Francisco field office at (415) 553-7400, or visit tips.fbi.gov. Callers may remain anonymous.
