Morrisson chorus, workshops, upcoming events in Hayward area

Morrisson Theatre Chorus concerts
The Morrisson Theatre Chorus will perform its summer concert series Friday through Sunday.
“Flavors of Latin America” will feature the lively and romantic music of Latin America.  Cesar Cancino is the director.
The concerts will be at 8 p.m. July 21 and July 22 and 2 p.m. July 23.
Tickets are $12 to $18 with discounts for youth and seniors. They can be ordered at or at 510-881-6777

Hayward Promise board looks to future
Residents are invited to the Hayward Promise Neighborhood Community Advisory Board’s meeting Saturday to discuss plans for the next funding cycle.
The meeting will be 10 a.m. to noon July 22 at Cal State East Bay’s College of Education and Allied Studies, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward, Arts and Education Building, Room 142CA.

County citizens academy taking applications
The Alameda County Citizens Academy is accepting applications for its fall class.
The academy is a six-session program that provides information on county services. It is available to adults who live, work or own a business in Alameda County.
The academy will meet six Wednesdays, from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Sept. 20.
The free academy includes tours of some county facilities, demonstrations of specialized equipment and hands-on activities. The academy will review what services Alameda County provides and how it develops a budget.

Office of Education board names president
The Alameda County Office of Education board has selected Ken Berrick as its new president, succeeding Eileen McDonald.
Yvonne Cerrato will serve as vice president for the 2017-18 school year.
Berrick represents Area 3, which includes Piedmont and portions of Oakland, including the Oakland hills, East Lake, San Antonio, Fruitvale and part of East Oakland.
Cerrato serves as Trustee for Area 7, which includes Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, Sunol, Mountain House and part of Fremont.
CalFresh clinic at Hayward library
A CalFresh enrollment clinic is planned for July 28 at the Hayward Main Library.
Alameda County Community Food Bank staff members will help residents determine if they qualify for assistance from the Cal Fresh nutrition program and answer any questions.
The clinic will be 3 to 4:30 p.m. July 28 at the Hayward Main Library, 835 C St. Drop-ins are welcome.
Embroidering postcards workshop in Hayward
A workshop on embroidering vintage postcards is planned Saturday at the Hayward Main Library.
The class is part of the monthly Crafting @ the Library series.
Materials will be provided, along with instructions on a few embroidery stitches. The finished products can be framed or used for greeting cards.

Orchid care class in Castro Valley
A class on caring for orchids will be Sunday at the Castro Valley Library.
Sung Lee, past president of the Diablo View Orchid Society, will discuss how orchids grow and how to help them rebloom. Those taking part are encouraged to take an orchid for specific questions.
The class will be 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the library, 3600 Norbridge Ave.

CHP to offer teen driver workshop
The California Highway Patrol will hold a teen driver workshop Tuesday at the Castro Valley Library.
As part of the “Start Smart: Teen Driver Program,” CHP officers will discuss how to avoid traffic accidents, things that can cause collisions, driver/parent responsibilities and using seatbelt.
The class will include testimonials from officers who have investigated fatal accidents involving teenagers, and people who have had teen family members die in collisions.
The Start Smart driver safety education class targets new and future teenage drivers ages 15 to 19 and their parents/guardians.

Painting memory boxes in San Lorenzo
Residents 16 years and older are invited to join the Northern California Decorative Artists on Saturday to paint memory boxes in San Lorenzo for families of newborns who have died at area hospitals.
The families use the boxes to keep mementos of the newborns’ lives.
Those taking part can make cards instead if they prefer. Assistance will be available for beginners.
