Laney College camp teaches Bay Area kids the rigors of debate

OAKLAND — Bay Area middle and high school students can apply to attend an intense, week-long debate camp at Laney College from July 31 through Aug. 4.
The Julia Burke Debate Institute (JBDI) provides a week of immersion into speech and debate for more than 100 students each summer with some of the best urban debate instructors in the country, according to Mya Whitaker, program director for the Bay Area Urban Debate League . The camp features “five days of engaging, fast-paced learning through workshops and lectures led by accomplished debaters,” Whitaker said. Students learn and practice new techniques during the week, and then test their freshly honed skills in a tournament at the end of camp. The Burke institute focuses on advocacy and critical thinking skills.
The JBDI is open to all Bay Area middle and high school students of all debate skill levels. The camp is free for students at Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) partner schools and for all low-income, Bay Area families. Out-of-network students who do not qualify for a tuition waiver are charged $300, which includes instruction, supplies, meals, and a debate tournament. Approximately 95 percent of students attend the camp for free, Whitaker said.
