Wildfire smoke prompts Friday school closures; postponed homecoming

MARTINEZ — The poor air quality that prompted colleges and school districts across the Bay Area to close Thursday may persist for several days, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
As a result, the Contra Costa Community College District and the school districts that are closed today are expected to announce this afternoon whether they will reopen tomorrow.
A few districts, however, have already made the call.
As the devastating wildfires raging across Napa and Sonoma counties spread into Solano County, the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District, Vacaville Unified School District and Vallejo Unified School District on Wednesday announced that all their schools would close on Thursday and Friday.
John Swett Unified School District campuses also will remain closed on Friday. Schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District will remain closed Friday and all athletic events, team practices and after school activities are cancelled through Saturday.
“We do not take the decision to close our schools lightly, and know the burden it places on our families,” Superintendent Matthew Duffy wrote in a notice posted on the district’s website.
In addition to closing its campuses and administrative offices on Thursday, the Martinez Unified School District has postponed Alhambra High School’s homecoming rally, parade, dance and football game until the weekend of Nov. 3-4.
“The cancellation of this special event will undoubtedly be disappointing. However, given the context of greater challenges across the northern Bay Area I am sure you will agree there are many others suffering a greater loss,” a note posted on the district website says.
Although several Contra Costa Library branches closed Wednesday due to the smoky air, among the libraries that are normally open on Thursday only the El Cerrito and Bay Point facilities are closed.
