Tensions escalate, umpire issues warnings in first Giants-A’s meeting

MESA, Ariz.–There’s a reason they call it the Battle of the Bay.
It just so happens Monday’s battle took place in Mesa, Arizona. Not in Oakland or San Francisco.
For the first time this spring, the A’s and Giants met in the normally subdued and mild-mannered context of a Cactus League game. By the late innings, the traditional atmosphere had deteriorated as home plate umpire Mike DiMuro was left with no choice but to issue warnings to both clubs.
Tensions began to escalate after Giants’ reliever Sam Dyson surrendered a two-run home run to A’s infielder Franklin Barreto. Dyson threw his mid-90s fastball high and tight to the A’s next hitter, Khris Davis, who didn’t take kindly to the offering.
“He’s trying to find it, he’s been off,” Bochy said of Dyson. “I think that’s fair to say. You look at him, just out of sync here a little bit. Probably a little quick, trying to be a little quick to home plate.”
After a Davis walk, Dyson and the A’s designated hitter exchanged words and new Giants’ pitching coach Curt Young took a mound visit to help players cool off. It was the first time Young, who was fired as the A’s pitching coach last June, sat in an opposing dugout since his dismissal.
“(Young) just went out and talked to him,” Bochy explained. “He just walked a guy, gave up three runs or whatever.”
Dyson was later removed from the game after allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning, but the Giants’ next reliever, Roberto Gomez, didn’t do much to ease tempers. He hit Ramon Laureano on the hand with a pitch, which triggered a rise from the A’s dugout.
In the eighth inning, A’s pitcher Daniel Gossett plunked Giants’ infielder Orlando Calixte in the back, which Bochy thought of as an unfortunate byproduct of Monday’s disputes.
“You feel bad,” Bochy said. “Here you’ve got one of the nicest kids in Calixte, he gets hit in the back in spring training. It’s not worth talking about.”
