Fremont police seek would-be robbery suspects

FREMONT — Police are asking for the public’s help in finding suspects whose lack of nerve may have foiled their attempt at robbing a store over the weekend.
At 11:26 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a report of a robbery in progress at the city’s Pacific Commons mall. Officers who arrived at Verizon Wireless, 43502 Christy St., learned that three suspects walked in and demanded people inside drop to the floor.
But the suspects, who police later learned by reviewing surveillance-video camera footage review had been lingering on mall property for about 45 minutes beforehand, suddenly changed their minds.
Without taking anything or hurting anyone, they fled to the mall’s east parking lot and drove away in a van that was last seen eastbound on Auto Mall Parkway, police said.
One reason may have been that the store was hosting more shoppers than usual, as well as exhibitors setting up for an event, police said Monday.
Officers, who were in the area on auto burglary enforcement and traffic patrol duty, were able to respond quickly, missing the suspects by seconds.
At 9:18 a.m. Sunday, officers were able to recover the van, finding it abandoned on Spry Common and soon learning it had been stolen out of Antioch, police said.
Police described the suspects as a black man in his twenties, about 6 feet tall with a slim build, wearing a yellow rain suit, dark-colored sweatshirt and black mask, carrying a gun; a man in his twenties with a slim build, wearing a bright orange vest, blue jeans and white shoes, carrying a gun; and a man with a medium build, wearing dark-colored sweatshirt and  jeans, and carrying a black bag and a stun-gun device.
