National owner closing San Jose’s Gordon Biersch restaurant

CraftWorks , the Colorado-based company that owns San Jose’s Gordon Biersch brewery restaurant, is closing the landmark location as of June 3.
Corporate representatives and local restaurant employees would not discuss the change, but the news was confirmed by one of the men who sold the restaurant to CraftWorks nearly 20 years ago: Dan Gordon.
Since acquiring the restaurants founded by that pioneering Bay Area brewing duo of Gordon and Dean Biersch, the company — which specializes in brewery restaurants and also owns Rock Bottom — has expanded the brand to more than 14 states.
But the Bay Area locations have not fared well, with CraftWorks closing the Palo Alto and San Francisco restaurants. San Jose was the remaining one.
“It’s depressing for Dean and me to see what happened there,” Gordon said Friday. “They’re treating it like a Chili’s instead of the jewel that it was.”
The San Fernando Street restaurant, on a historic block downtown, boasts a large New Orleans-style brick courtyard and annually hosts concerts for the San Jose Jazz Festival.
Would Gordon and his partners consider getting back into the restaurant business, as they did when they leased back the Palo Alto location? That one is now called Dan Gordon’s.
He couldn’t confirm interest, noting that the restaurant desperately needs remodeling and repairs.
However, Gordon said, “It’s not out of the question.”‘
Stay tuned for updates.
