Body found in alley south of downtown San Jose

SAN JOSE — A man’s body was discovered Friday morning in an alley south of downtown San Jose, police said.
A cause of death wasn’t readily apparent, but San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said it appears suspicious.

Officers responded to a report of a man down in the 700 block of South Second Street at 10:30 a.m. and found a man in an alley behind the Neptune Society, which provides cremation services.
Garcia said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives also went to the scene, which is routine in cases where the cause of death isn’t clear.

Additional information was not immediately available.
The discovery of the body comes amid a sudden surge in violence. After a roughly three-month period in which no homicides were recorded, the city has seen five since May 6 .
