Several pets die in Oakley house fire

OAKLEY — Several pets died in a house fire in Oakley this week, a fire official said.
The blaze broke out shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday in the kitchen of a home on Butler Lane, according to East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ross Macumber.

The fire burned itself out by the time firefighters arrived, said Macumber, adding that there was heavy fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the house.
Two cats and a bird were found dead inside the home, but a dog managed to survive the flames, Macumber said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
