San Jose: Willow Glen prowling suspect arrested

SAN JOSE — A suspected Willow Glen prowler has been arrested in connection with a pair of peeping encounters earlier this month, and police are asking for the public’s help linking him with other similar incidents and burglaries in the general vicinity.
Hector Leanos Jr., 40, of San Jose, was arrested May 18, 2018 on suspicion of prowling in connection with at least one incident earlier in the month in the Willow Glen neighborhood in San Jose. Police are investigating his possible ties to several other instances. (San Jose Police Dept.)
Hector Leanos Jr., was arrested Friday afternoon in San Jose on suspicion of one count of trespassing and prowling and one count of peeking and prowling, both misdemeanors. He was also booked on an unrelated misdemeanor domestic-violence warrant. Leanos is out of jail custody.
The incidents that led to his arrest started with a May 1 report of a man captured on surveillance video trespassing on the property of a home in the 1200 block of Greenwood Avenue and “peeking into an occupied bedroom window,” according to San Jose police.
Then on May 3, a man believed to be the suspect in the earlier instance was recorded on surveillance video “appearing to case” a nearby home. In that video, the suspect walked on a driveway and shined a flashlight at the camera recording him, and the images were shared by neighbors on social media.
That led to both detectives and residents eventually identifying Leanos as the suspect, and he was arrested Friday, police said.
But detectives also believe Leanos committed other similar crimes in the area, and are asking residents to review any surveillance video they might have of him. Sgt. Enrique Garcia said the window of focus should be between May 1 and May 8, between midnight and 4 a.m.
“We believe he is connected to other unsolved burglaries as well as other prowling and peeping cases,” Garcia said. “Residents should contact us if they discover footage of a prowler in their neighborhood, because it could help us further the investigation.”

Garcia added that the past suspect they’re seeking — possibly Leanos — would be wearing a hooded jacket. And while the incidents for which Leanos was arrested involved him being on foot, police say he owns a white 2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT, with a distinct truck bed, that might appear on video on other incidents.
