The City of Menifee early Sunday announced that Mayor Neil Winter had unexpectedly died late Saturday.
“The City of Menifee is mourning the passing of beloved, and respected Honorable Mayor Neil Winter, 65,” the city said in a news release.
“In respect of the family, and as more details are released, the City of Menifee will be releasing a full statement in the coming days,” the statement said.
In a tweet, Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez said that emergency personnel summoned to Winter’s home found him in full arrest. She offered prayers to the family.

Elected in November 2016, Winter was a newcomer who beat incumbent Scott Mann.
He was a retired corporate executive who ran a grassroots campaign and was helped into office by Mann’s troubles with the California Fair Political Practices Commission, which had fined Mann $60,000 for violations stemming from the personal use of campaign contributions.
