My friend the English professor, a defender of the English language, has a list of grammatical pet peeves, including:
— “It’s” is a contraction; “its” is a possessive.
— “Affect” is a verb; “effect” is more often a noun.
— “Nonplussed” doesn’t mean what you think it means.
— It is “I couldn’t care less,” not “I could care less.”
— “Lose” and “loose” are different words.
— “Irregardless” is not a word at all.
When the prof was North in today’s deal, he was horrified to watch South loose two tricks at his slam. When West led the queen of diamonds, South threw a club on dummy’s ace, drew trumps and led a heart to his king. West won and led another heart. South took the Q-J of hearts to discard a second club, but he still had to loose a club to West’s king.
South thought he couldn’t effect the outcome; he was nonplussed when the prof insisted that six spades was cold.
“Play low from dummy on the first diamond, deferring your discard on the ace,” the prof said, “and ruff in your hand. Draw trumps and lead your four of hearts. Then you could care less how West defends. If he takes the ace, you win seven trump tricks, three hearts, a diamond and a club.
“If instead West plays low, dummy’s queen wins, and you discard your king of hearts on the ace of diamonds and loose one club. So you succeed irregardless.”
As for declarer’s winning play, it’s name is the “Morton’s Fork Coup.” I think its a shame he went down.
