Santa Cruz man shoots self after beating a woman and holding her against her will, police say

SCOTTS VALLEY – A man, who reportedly beat a woman and held her against her will, shot himself early Saturday morning and was airlifted to a Bay Area medical center before being arrested by police.
Ryan Schell, 29, of Santa Cruz, was charged with felony domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and kidnapping, according to a Scotts Valley Police Department statement.
At around 4 a.m., officers arrived at the 100 block of Mt. Hermon Road, responding to a report of gunshots fired.
As officers arrived, they heard gunshots.
Police entered the residence and found Schell, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Schell was airlifted to Valley Medical Center, and underwent surgery.
The woman was taken to Dominican Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
