SANTA CLARA — The Super Bowl is not coming back to Levi’s Stadium as early as the 49ers once hoped. Their hunt, however, remains alive to again host the game — and, of course, actually win the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 1995.
A year after the 49ers said they’d bid to host Super Bowl 57 or 58, those 2023 and 2024 games will be awarded to Arizona and New Orleans, according to a Monday report by the SportsBusiness Journal’s Daniel Kaplan.
The 49ers have turned their focus on landing the 2025 or 2026 Super Bowl, by which time a massive, mixed-use development should be completed next door to Levi’s Stadium, according to a team source.

Under a new selection system, the league has stiff-armed cities’ bids to now target its desired host region, negotiate with it and then have owners vote on it, which will be the case Tuesday, Kaplan reported.

At the 49ers’ state-of-the-franchise address last May 31, 49ers president Al Guido announced plans to bid in October on Super Bowls 57 and 58, hoping that a long-proposed, mixed-use development would enhance their effort. Delays ensued over the Related Santa Clara project that will use 200 acres to combine office, retail, residential, hotel and recreation space next to Levi’s Stadium.
Levi’s Stadium was two seasons into the 49ers occupancy when it successfully hosted Super Bowl 50 in 2016.

Las Vegas’ new home for the Raiders, set to open in 2020, would seem to be Santa Clara’s chief challenger for the 2025 or 2026 Super Bowl, with Dallas and even Indianapolis also contenders, according to a league source.
