Berkeley’s Five will be replaced by Mediterranean restaurant

Berkeley’s Hotel Shattuck Plaza will turn its popular Cal-American restaurant Five into a Mediterranean-focused dining spot this summer.
Five will close June 18, after which work will begin to turn the dining room into Zino, a Mediterranean-focused concept with Brandon Hicks as executive chef. The new restaurant, owned by BPR Properties Berkeley, is expected to open in late summer.
“Mediterranean food holds a special place in my heart and I’m excited to bring my passion to the Bay Area,” Hicks said in a statement. He honed his culinary skills in New York at the Med-focused Ilili and French restaurants Brasserie 8-1/2 and Picholine.
Look for a selection of mezze, shared plates and tagines based on the cuisines of the broader Mediterranean region.
