Raiders acquire QB Christian Hackenberg from Jets

The Raiders have acquired quarterback Christian Hackenberg from the New York Jets, Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
Oakland sends a conditional seventh-round pick in 2019 back to New York.
Hackenberg was a second-round pick in 2016, taken 51st overall, but never appeared in a game for the Jets. His stats from Penn State (2013-15) feature a 56.1 completion percentage, 8,457 passing yards, 48 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. Hackenberg joins Oakland’s three-man quarterback room of Derek Carr, EJ Manuel and Connor Cook. The Raiders recently released Josh Johnson, who was the fourth quarterback for his brief stint on Oakland’s roster this offseason.
Hackenberg spoke to New York media Tuesday after receiving zero reps during 7-on-7 and team drills during OTAs.
“It’s out of my control,” Hackenberg said regarding his situation with the team, per the New York Post . “All I know is I’m 23 and I have a lot of ball ahead of me. Hell, my career hasn’t even started yet.”

The Jets also roster Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and 2018 first-round pick Sam Darnold at the quarterback position, so it was clear Hackenberg didn’t have much of a future there.
Here is the full segment of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp episode with Hackenberg from 2016, the same year he said in an ESPN Insider story that he’d be shocked if Hackenberg wasn’t a first-round pick.

Hackenberg only dressed for five regular season games in two seasons with the Jets. Now the former second-round pick can start anew in Oakland with a chance to make more of an impact.
