Two remain hospitalized after Highway 4 big rig crash

ANTIOCH — Two people taken by helicopter to a hospital late Monday after a major crash on Highway 4 remained there Tuesday, while California Highway Patrol investigators continued to put together the puzzle as to how it happened.
A big rig was one of at least four vehicles involved in the crash, agency spokesman Officer Brandon Correia said. An unspecified number of other people also were taken by ambulance to unspecified hospitals, but the CHP did not have an update on the nature of their injuries or their conditions.
The two people who were taken by helicopter had major injuries, according to the CHP.
The crash happened just east of the Hillcrest Avenue exit on westbound Highway 4 right after 10:30 p.m., Correia said.
The CHP closed a stretch of the westbound direction for about 80 minutes, then opened one lane at a time as the cleanup continued. All the lanes were reopened about 1:40 a.m., Correia said.
