Sheriff’s deputies shot, kill man who fatally shot woman in Joshua Tree

A woman and an ex-boyfriend died Monday night in Joshua Tree after he allegedly shot her and then sheriff’s deputies, who had responded to a call about the pair, shot him.
Dispatchers received the call just before 8:15 p.m. from someone who was on an open line with the woman after she went to meet with an ex-boyfriend in a dirt field near the Yucca Trail and La Contenta Road, according to a San Bernardino County sheriff’s news release.
The caller could hear the woman screaming and believed she was being assaulted. The caller also could hear a man making statements about having a gun, the news release stated.
Sheriff’s deputies went to the location and saw the pair standing outside a vehicle. As deputies attempted to make contact, the man shot the woman in the upper body. In turn, a deputy shot the man, who then ran from the location.
More deputies arrived and searched the desert area for the homicide suspect. They eventually found him near a bush, and a second deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to the release. Details were not immediately available about how the second shooting occurred.
The man died at the scene. Rescue personnel responded and took the woman to a hospital, where she died about 9:35 p.m., the release stated. Sheriff’s officials did not release identifying information about the man or woman.

Morongo Basin deputies are all okay. We truly appreciate the outpour of support by the community as to the welfare of the involved deputies. These incidents are never easy for law enforcement officers and it truly is very humbling to see so much support by the communities. https://t.co/3d24d7Jifd
