Plaza statue initiative signatures sent to elections office

The signatures gathered for a ballot initiative to put the decision to keep or remove the statue of President William McKinley in the hands of Arcata voters was sent to the county elections office Monday. The decades-old debate over the statue's placement at the center of the plaza was reinvigorated in October 2017 by a vocal group of community members who argue the statue represents colonialism, imperialism, racism and genocide.
