PALO ALTO — Nearly three dozen women, and a few men, on Thursday did what they promised  in a “Dear Christine” letter many of them signed this week in support of the Palo Alto professor under siege for her allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: They linked arms in front of her her Palo Alto home and chanted “Protect Christine! Protect Christine.”
The hastily-called rally and march was made of up mostly Palo Alto mothers and neighbors showing solidarity for Christine Blasey Ford who has been both celebrated by the #MeToo movement and the subject of harassment and death threats from her critics.“We believe Christine,” they chanted. “Her story is our story!”

Thursday’s rally is part of a broad effort to back the embattled Palo Alto University psychology professor who came forward in a Sunday article in the Washington Post to share her name and allegations that have thrown Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court into question and set up a possible hearing next week in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
She claims that in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh was “stumbling drunk” when he and a friend forced her into a bedroom at a high school party, then groped her, tried to strip off her clothes and put his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams. One of his friends, Mark Judge, interrupted the assault, she alleges, giving her the chance to flee.
Kavanaugh vigorously denies the claims, saying he wasn’t at the party in question, and his supporters say the 11th hour claims are a desperate attempts by Democrats to derail his confirmation.

Activists on Thursday chartered a plane to fly above Palo Alto displaying a banner, saying “Thank you, Christine. We have your back.” A candlelight vigil on a Palo Alto street corner is planned for Sunday night. Letters of support are stuffing her mailboxes at home and at her office, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay her legal bills.
And at Thursday’s rally, supporters said they weren’t just there for Blasey Ford.
“I’m here today for all of my friends who are too retraumatized to come, who say ‘I can’t go through this again,”” said Jill Rege, who lives in Palo Alto. “They can barely get out of bed because it puts them right back where they were 25 or 30 years ago. They hid, they shoved it down, but they all remember.”
