CIF football: State Open game has new date, again

Is it really rescheduling when the original date becomes the new date?
Less than a week after it pushed back the dates of its Northern California regional and state football championships to relieve sections that have postponed and rescheduled games numerous times as a result of unhealthy air from the Camp Fire in Butte County, the California Interscholastic Federation announced Monday that its marquee championship game is moving back to its original date.
The Open Division championship will be played Dec. 8 at Cerritos College in Norwalk, the same weekend as the NorCal regional championships in lower divisions and a week before the state championships in lower divisions.
“Our philosophy from the onset of the fires and their impact across the state has been to try to modify and adapt as the situations dictate with causing the least disruption to our schools and students as possible,” CIF executive director Roger Blake said in a statement. “We feel the adjustments to the CIF State Football Championship Bowl games reflect that philosophy.”
Mater Dei and St. John Bosco will play Friday night for the Southern Section Division I championship, with the winner advancing to the state Open game.
Had the CIF not changed date again, the Southern California winner would have had three weeks between the section final and state game Dec. 15.
For some Bay Area teams. that’s nothing.
Given that several North Coast Section teams have not played since Oct. 26, they will have 29 days between games if they play as scheduled Saturday.
De La Salle, the favorite to represent the North in the state Open game, has played only one game since Oct. 26 and is not scheduled to play again until the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
The Southern Section could have moved the Mater Dei-Bosco game back a week, to give both the SoCal champ and NorCal champ the same amount of time (two weeks) between games.
Now, the NorCal champ will have one week to prepare. Bosco and Mater Dei will have two, as if the national powers and past two state Open champs need any more advantages.
