This 100-member Riverside choir will sing for Martin Luther King Jr.

Every voice lifted and sang Thursday, Jan. 10, as the MLK Family Community Choir began rehearsals for a community birthday celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Thursday evening’s rehearsal was open to the public and drew more than 100 singers. A second rehearsal at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, also is open to public participation. Both are at Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Riverside.

That’s where the choir will perform starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, as part of a celebration that will also feature Donzaleigh Abernathy, a civil rights activist and the daughter of the Rev. Ralph Abernathy.
On the holiday itself — Monday, Jan. 21 — the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Walk-A-Thon will feature a 5-kilometer walk from the Stratton Center in Bordwell Park to the Riverside City College Digital Library, with a stop at the King statue on Main Street.
