Sierra Central readies for second Chico branch

CHICO — Fencing and a sign for Hilbers Construction are the indications that Sierra Central Credit Union is ready to start on its new Chico location.
The fencing went up recently in the parking lot in the East Avenue shopping center that contains Safeway, next to the McDonald’s restaurant and not far from Pleasant Valley High School.
Sierra Central CEO John Cassidy told the Enterprise-Record in 2017 that a new office was planned in Chico and that a long search had revealed that area as a good prospect.
Cassidy, who attended Butte College, told the Enterprise-Record then that a second location was being considered. The current branch is in downtown Chico, at 352 E. First St.
Chico Planning Department Deputy Director Brendan Vieg confirmed the fencing is surrounding the Sierra Central’s new site.
In 2017, the credit union was considering the site for a second branch.
Based in Yuba City, the credit union opened its first location in Chico in 1983 in the Almond Orchard Shopping Center, according to the newspaper files, but that branch no longer exists.
Sierra Central chose Hilbers Construction of Yuba City as the contractor. Hilbers has already been busy in Chico with the new Holiday Inn Express off East 20th Street, and the Surf Thru Express Car Wash on The Esplanade. It also handled the remodeling of the Klean Kanteen office in south Chico.
