The season and home-opener didn’t go as planned for the San Marcos Knights Boys Lacrosse team, and then again, it wasn’t too bad. They gave lacrosse powerhouse, Poway, a good run for their money, coming up just short, losing 8-6, on Friday night.
The lead was never over 1 goal until the 4th quarter, was tied on 4 different occasions, and had 5 lead changes. It was 3-3 after the 1st quarter, 5-4 at snack-time, and tied at 6 after 3 quarters of play.
Not too mention, the San Marcos defense seemingly shut down one of the hottest scorers in the county in Marquez White.
Poway team captain, Eli Butler started off the scoring with a beautiful laser shot into the net. He would finish the day with a hat-trick. Zachary Allums added a goal off a really nice assist from Butler, before Hunter Lutticken scored his first of 2 goals. At the other end it was Luca Lietti, Joe DeDonatis and Luke Polderman doing the scoring for the Knights.
DeDonatis scored numbers 2 and 3 in the 2nd quarter to give San Marcos the 5-3 lead, but Allums would score just before halftime to make it 5-4.
Butler and Mason Manimtim exchanged goals to start off the 3rd quarter, with Butler scoring his 3rd of the night, moments later.
Lutticken’s 2nd goal gave the Titans a 7-6 lead, while Princeton commit, Marquez White sealed the deal with his first goal of the night.
Poway goes to 3-0 on the season and will host Carlsbad on Tuesday, while San Marcos starts off the season 0-1 with a road trip to Bishop’s on Monday coming up.
