CARLSBAD (KUSI) – New developments tonight in a deadly home invasion in Carlsbad.
Police tell KUSI the man and woman who murdered a woman in her home are transients with a record of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and electronics. After abandoning the one item they stole, this latest attack and murder seems all the more sinister.
A quiet Carlsbad neighborhood with lush green lawns, blooming flowers, and friendly neighbors are shaken Monday morning by the sounds of police choppers, sirens, and reports of a sinister burglary that resulted in bloodshed.
Police say in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane around 12:30 AM a man and woman broke into a home, stabbing the unsuspecting 64-year-old woman inside multiple times. They then took off in her car. By the time paramedics could get to her, she was succumbing to her wounds, dying at the hospital an hour later.
By 7:30 PM authorities confirmed that 37-year-old Ian Bushee and 26-year-old Malissa James, both transients and both on probation in San Bernardin, are the two suspects in this murder.
What’s not clear, is why Monday morning in Carlsbad they stabbed this homeowner to death only to abandon the stolen car and return to the lagoon just blocks from the scene of the crime.
Carlsbad Police Chief Neil Gallucci says after this tragedy his prayers are with the family and while the accused homeless couple remains in custody, police will continue collecting evidence and building their case.
