Driver killed when vehicle plunges down hillside on Mount Tamalpais

A man was killed Saturday when his vehicle plunged down a deep hillside in Mount Tamalpais State Park, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP received a call at around 10:30 a.m. that a vehicle had driven off the side of Ridgecrest Boulevard and crashed approximately 500 feet below.
Emergency crews from Marin CHP, Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Marin County Fire and California State Parks responded to the area. Crews had to establish a long-line rescue system because of the difficult terrain and were lowered to the vehicle. They found the driver, who was the only occupant, deceased in the vehicle. Sonoma Sheriff helicopter Henry 1 assisted in bringing the driver back up to the roadway.
A CHP helicopter searched the scene to make sure no one was struck because the area is popular with hikers and cyclists.
The identity of the driver was not immediately available.
