East Bay fire kills 61-year-old man

EL SOBRANTE — Firefighters pulled a 61-year-old man from a burning home in El Sobrante early Sunday morning, but his injuries were too severe for medical personnel to save him, and he died at the scene shortly after.
Firefighters received a call at 3:38 a.m. Sunday reporting flames coming up through the roof of a one-story house in the 1900 block of Heath Drive, said Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill. There were reports that a man was still inside the burning house, so firefighters immediately went into rescue mode. They found the man, brought him to safety and tried to resuscitate him. But attempts to save his life were unsuccessful, Hill said.

Firefighters put out the fire at 4:04 a.m., minutes after the victim was pulled from the house.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the blaze may have started in the attic, Hill said. The damage to the home appears to be extensive, he said.
