Sparks trade guards: Odyssey Sims for Minnesota Lynx’s Alexis Jones

The WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks acquired guard Alexis Jones from the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for guard Odyssey Sims, the Sparks announced Monday.
The 5-foot-9 Jones was drafted No. 12 overall by the Lynx in the 2017 WNBA Draft; she shot 32 percent from 3-point range in limited action last season.
“Alexis is a talented point guard who can stretch the defense with her 3-point shooting,” Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said in a news release.
“She has already shown flashes of great play at both ends of the court. She brings playoff and championship experience in winning the WNBA championship in 2017. She will be a great addition to our backcourt.”
Sims will head to Minnesota, where she’ll try to help fill the void left by retired Lynx legend Lindsay Whalen, with whom Sims had a notable rivalry.
The Sparks acquired Sims prior to the 2017 season in a trade with the Dallas Wings. The No. 2 overall pick in 2014, she averaged 8.2 points and 2.8 assists last season, shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from 3-point range in 25.5 minutes per game.
In February, the Sparks matched an offer sheet from the Phoenix Mercury to retain Sims, a restricted free agent, signing her to a reported three-year max contract, according to WNBA Insider’s Rachel Galligan.
“I’d like to thank Odyssey Sims for her contributions to the Sparks organization,” Toler said. “We wish Odyssey the best as she moves on to the next phase of her WNBA career.”
Jones started her collegiate career at Duke before transferring to Baylor, where she earned All-Big 12 first-team honors her junior and senior seasons. As a senior, she averaged 13.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.2 steals and shot 41.1 percent from distance.
The Sparks begin training camp on May 5 and their home opener will be May 31 against the Connecticut Sun.
